Landry Jones Slipping Down (And Maybe Out) The NFL Draft?

Stay connected for news and updates

Saturday I sat and watched 3 inexperienced QBs play with the heart and poise that I haven’t seen from Landry since late 2010. Before the season, these QBs supposedly weren’t in Landry's zip code. But on Saturday, I caught myself thinking “what if we had this guy instead”, 4 times!

Nick Florence has a lot to prove trying to follow the best QB in Baylor history. He is no RGIII, but going to Morgantown and throwing for 581 yards & 5 TDs will ease the minds of Baylor’s fans about the offense. He looked fearless. Not saying that OU’s offense can’t hang 63 in Morgantown, but I would be shocked.

JW Walsh was beat out by Lunt as the starter for OkState. A week before the Texas game, he probably had no idea he was playing, let alone starting. Then he goes out Saturday and lights up "the #1 defense in the Big 12" for 301 passing yards, 2 TDs, and 57 rushing yards.

David Ash was on the other side of the field for Texas. Well Ash, who is supposedly a mediocre QB, passed for 300 yards & 3 TDs in Stillwater. More importantly, he looked poised in Texas’ game winning drive. What more can you ask for?

I won’t even mention Geno Smith’s numbers, because we already know Landry is not on his level. The three QBs I mentioned were not on anyone’s Heisman board. Ash was a punch line, Florence is a first year starter, and Walsh isn’t even a starter.

Before I’m accused of overreacting, let me say this… I DO NOT believe that Florence, Ash, or Walsh is better than Landry just because of one game. I also don’t believe that all hope is lost for Landry. Are there other areas that can improve? Sure! But this is about Landry.

My point is Landry has to start playing with the kind of edge & looseness that I saw from those QBs. He plays entirely too timid as a 4th year starter. He is slipping out of every NFL analyst’s top ten. His career, his legacy depends on how he finishes the season. He has had two “big games” without Broyles and he looked awful in both. Forget that our defense can keep most games close, and play like we need to score every time we get the ball. Landry came back to prove his doubters wrong… he isn’t and he’s running out of time!
