Sooner Nation Podcast Tonight At 8:30 (CST) - Special Teams And Basketball

Oklahoma's athletics have turned to basketball where the Sooners are off to a rough 0-2 conference start so you better believe we'll be discussing that tonight. We also can't do an entire show without discussing at least some football so tonight (in addition to coaching rumors) we'll be addressing Oklahoma attention, or lack thereof, towards special teams.

LOL!!!

We started with the “Tebow” chant

by ccmachine on Jan 8, 2012 8:40 PM CST up reply actions

didn't catch that. everyone is going crazy here in colorado

Skip Bayless

is blowing up twitter with TEBOW chatter…

by OkieGirl on Jan 8, 2012 8:44 PM CST up reply actions

why is it necessary for tony jefferson

to know who his position coach is at this point in time? They aren’t even in school and probably not working out yet. Does the coaching staff need the players permission to make changes?

by omsooner on Jan 8, 2012 8:45 PM CST reply actions

Is it necessary? No.

But is it inconceivable that he gets pissed about the not knowing and decides to leave?

by Jordan Esco on Jan 8, 2012 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

I don't believe that players aren't "buying in"

because they can’t trust their coaches. IMO the problem is the nature of a a young kid today being asked to work his ass off when he has never had to before

by pitbull17 on Jan 8, 2012 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

I think he es trying to support the kid & was more like

“hey we don’t even know”… You’re not alone. His tweet was a response to the recruit tweet

by OU JJ on Jan 8, 2012 9:33 PM CST up reply actions

are you really suggesting

that jefferson would leave because he’s not kept in the loop???

Team FIRST, Effort SECOND, Talent THIRD, Selfish NEVER

by omsooner on Jan 8, 2012 8:47 PM CST reply actions

I don't think anyone is saying that but

I agree that it can be frustrating for a kid to not know about his position coach. I’m also pretty certain that T. Jefferson already knows.

by ccmachine on Jan 8, 2012 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

as am I

so why the twit?

Team FIRST, Effort SECOND, Talent THIRD, Selfish NEVER

by omsooner on Jan 8, 2012 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

Reaching out IMO ....

Aying hey we don’t know either

by OU JJ on Jan 8, 2012 9:34 PM CST up reply actions

No, I'm not suggesting it

Just saying that it’s not out of the realm of possibility. In the end (classic Stoops), we’re dealing with 18-20 something year olds so to say anything definitively isn’t very smart IMO.

by Jordan Esco on Jan 8, 2012 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

I would say however

That if they hired a guy and Jefferson or any other player hated who they hired, could they leave then? Absolutely IMO.

by Jordan Esco on Jan 8, 2012 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

the logic of this discussion

seems to assume that m stoops will replace martinez. Are you suggesting that the players will hate m stoops and leave?

by omsooner on Jan 8, 2012 8:56 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe

Mike isn’t exactly a laid back guy and if his demeanor on the sideline is any indication of how he might be w/ these guys in practice, then yeah I don’t think it’s inconceivable that he could rub some of these guys the wrong way.

by Jordan Esco on Jan 8, 2012 8:58 PM CST up reply actions

true

but asking them to simply go to class seems to piss some of them off as well

Team FIRST, Effort SECOND, Talent THIRD, Selfish NEVER

by omsooner on Jan 8, 2012 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

and we both know

he will be in their face and if they can’t handle that, then maybe they should leave. Nobody on any other college staff will get in their face and certainly no NFL coach will either

how can you coach football

if you’re afraid players are going to get hurt. That’s just football

by omsooner on Jan 8, 2012 9:02 PM CST reply actions

kick coverage

is a SUICIDE squad – why would you put your starters at risk. If OU has the caliber of athletes that we think they have, why not use backups? Oh yeah, they don’t have a special teams coach to coach them up!

If they are being that cautious whats does it tell the players?

yes.....QB

Jones is a first round draft pick. But every D is schemed to stop a passing QB

by Redhawk on Jan 8, 2012 9:17 PM CST reply actions

I think if you poll them

they would all want him to go pro, and not have to face OU led with Landry Jones

by Redhawk on Jan 8, 2012 9:19 PM CST up reply actions

I think it does

I mean he’s no Tim Tebow that wins despite everything….or even an Robert Griffin III that can just carry the team by himself

by Redhawk on Jan 8, 2012 9:21 PM CST up reply actions

of course they would rather prepare for

drew allen or blake bell, but that doesn’t mean they FEAR landry jones – maybe his experience, maybe

I think they do need a "star" or two...but we need hunger too

We haven’t had a player that could carry a team on offense for awhile.

by Redhawk on Jan 8, 2012 9:26 PM CST up reply actions

I'll take hunger/drive WITH talent

over Hunger and little talent. Rudy still road the bench.

by Redhawk on Jan 8, 2012 9:25 PM CST reply actions

hunger/drive with talent

seems to be in short supply

yes shockingly so

I think it’s the twitter/media society that waters down kids passions, and teaches them to not really just be too “cocky”. A little cocky goes a long way!

by Redhawk on Jan 8, 2012 9:28 PM CST up reply actions

There's a do-it-yourself joke here

between the ingredients of a picture of someone who used P.E.D.s at one time or another and the phrase “a little cocky”

Rumor has it that Texas is about to sign a huge corporate sponsorship deal for the Longhorn Network. They just have to decide which brand represents them best: Dyson, Eureka or Hoover.

the game saturday

would have been a forty point loss under capel IMO

Team FIRST, Effort SECOND, Talent THIRD, Selfish NEVER

by omsooner on Jan 8, 2012 9:27 PM CST reply actions

agreed

it was starting to be a blow out…and the team especially the bench kept fighting when they really had only pride to fight for.

by Redhawk on Jan 8, 2012 9:29 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with osby needing to be more aggressive

but the risk is foul trouble and they’re screwed if he sits on the bench – depth is beginning to lack – except for honore – love that guy

Team FIRST, Effort SECOND, Talent THIRD, Selfish NEVER

by omsooner on Jan 8, 2012 9:32 PM CST reply actions

you're point is valid

but the chances of picking up those fouls on the offensive end is not as great as it is on the defensive end and he doesn’t seem to have an issue there

by Jordan Esco on Jan 8, 2012 9:33 PM CST up reply actions

quality big man depth is an issue

Osby is a little soft inside…but I think he’d be in foul trouble if he wasn’t

by Redhawk on Jan 8, 2012 9:34 PM CST up reply actions

Here's my basketball question:

Will this team win enough in conference play to make the NCAA tourny dance?

And…if the answer is no….NIT? and would that be OK?

by Redhawk on Jan 8, 2012 9:36 PM CST reply actions

sadly NIT

would be acceptable to me this year

Team FIRST, Effort SECOND, Talent THIRD, Selfish NEVER

by omsooner on Jan 8, 2012 9:38 PM CST up reply actions

I'm gonna say no on the NCAA

But after back-to-back years of no post season I would be OK with the NIT
