Ranking the Big 12 QBs for the 2012 season
With the news this week of Landry Jones' decision to return for his senior season, we thought it would be interesting to put together our rankings for the Big 12 QBs and the 2012 season. As you'll see after the jump, there was a lot of agreement on the top half of the league. The bottom half, not so much.

I can't speak to how/why the other guys put their rankings together, so I'm sure they'll add to the conversation in the comments. I can give you a quick recap on why I had mine in the order that I did.
1. OU - With Landry coming back, this was a no-brainer IMO. He's got his issues no doubt, but he'll easily be the most experienced returning QB and that has to count for something.
2. WVU - If you watched it, you saw what Geno Smith is capable of in the Orange Bowl. If WVU can make it into the Big 12 next year, they'd be entering at about the perfect time with no real consensus favorite in the Big 12 next year.
3. KSU - I'll be honest. I've got a serious man crush on Collin Klein. How can you not love the way this kid plays the game? If he was a better passer, he'd have easily been #2 on my list.
4. TCU - Casey Pachall is just a gamer IMO. He's not the most polished QB, but he just has a knack for making big plays. It's not at all inconceivable that he could be the under center for the Big 12 favorite next year.
5. TTU - Seth Doege knows the Tech offense and given time can pick defenses apart. Just ask OU fans.
6. KU - The Jayhawks scored big when they got both Dayne Crist (formerly with Notre Dame) and Jake Heaps (formerly with BYU) this offseason. Crist will be eligible to play next season since he's already graduated and Heaps will be waiting in the wings for 2013.
7. ISU - Jared Barnett showed a ton of potential in 2011, obviously none more so than the upset of Okie State in primetime.
8. BU - RGIII's likely departure will be a monumental loss for the Bears. Nick Florence will have the unenviable task of trying to do so and while far from terrible, there is just no chance Baylor doesn't take a considerable backwards offensively.
9. UT - You won't have to tell any regular here just how bad the Texas QBs were in 2011 and there is no reason to expect any difference in 2012.
10. OSU - Well, I hope you enjoyed that run you had this year fellas. The Cowboys have zero experience returning at QB and could likely be choosing between a redshirt freshman or true freshman. Yikes.

OSU will still be better off than texass & baylor IMO.
I think they will asked to do less & focus on bubble screen type offense to get their feet wet.
Very tough choices in Stillwater
Walsh: 6’1" 195# – ‘10 – 3,097 yds, 63%, 35 TDs, 4 Ints, 1,300 yds rushing, 16 TDs
Lunt: 6’5" 205# – ’11 – 3,651 yds, 73%, 31 TDs, 4 Ints
Mr. Walsh has been practicing with the team for 12 months now and happens to run in the 4.4’s.
Lunt is on campus and is predicted to redshirt.
Tough to see either one or both of these guys rank dead last in anything…
Wait until you see your offense next year
Then it won’t be so hard.
Oh and you keep on buying that “Walsh runs in the 4.4’s” crap. Good luck with that.
No one has ever caught Walsh from behind.
Don’t know if that’s 4.4 speed or not…
Nick Florence
is better than you guys are giving him credit. The guy performed better when Griffin got hurt against Tech than Griffin had. The kid can sling it.
Didn't realize he burned his shirt there
That does suck. It doesn’t change the fact that he’s pretty salty.
they were hoping to redshirt him. I think he's a sr.

+100, couldn't agree more.
They are gonna struggle in other areas of the offense alot though.

Griffin will be missed but Ganaway and Wright are huge holes.
Wright and Ganaway made Griffin’s job a lot easier… Hard to see Florence match RGIII’s level without an excellent 240# tail back and one of the top 5 receivers in the country playing with him.
Pretty much agree with the rankings.
CC how in the world can you have texass at 6??. I can’t for the life of me buy that. Even if some of these teams have unproven qb’s it’s still better than what texass qb’s have proven to be.

Landry is a great passer. Leader? Not so much...
Drew Allen will transfer (maybe Tulsa).
Bell will become the starting QB by end of the year. Landry will choke against the Horns, then get replaced prior to Bedlam. Bell has a better chance of winning Bedlam (50/50) than Landry (30%).
So here is hoping for Landry to muddle through so he doesn’t get Belldozered before the Bedlam game!!
OSU QB Chelf is only sophmore and has higher QB rating than Weeden
And Gundy unlike Stoops let him have lots of experience including ’over a half against Kansas. I had never seen a starting QB playing great taken out before halftime before..
you might be thinking of his brother Colton Chelf who is a senior WR.
Soooo...
He has a higher qb rating and he played..how much??

Chelf played entire fourth quarter of most of OSU games
played entire 2nd half + 2 minutes of 1st half against Kansas
while he did hand it off a lot, he threw so far 49 passes with 34 completions. He doesn’t have zero experience. Because he went in early he went against 1st team defenses. Much more than typical backup.
The guy played in four of your thirteen games
FOUR!
And in all of one of those games did he have more than four pass attempts. But yeah, he’s super experienced.
but his QB rating
was really high — better than Weeden’s.
Just imagine if he had played in the Fiesta Bowl…OSU wouldn’t have been outplayed for most of the game.
He threw passes in 4 games this season 5 games last season
However he played in most of the games this season. He handed off and was only allowed to throw when it was 3rd and long.
Your point seems to make sense
and it’s the same point I thought made sense after OU lost to Florida in the NC game. I thought we would be fine with the linemen that we returned because “they saw time” in most every game. I was way wrong.
Hey guys...got a question for you.
I often hear people say Okie State is the Oregon of the Midwest: big offense (though who doesn’t have that these days outside of the SEC), changing uniforms, recent success, wildly wealthy benefactor, etc.
I can see it, I guess. Except that Oregon doesn’t just run a flashy offense – Chip Kelly rewrote the book on it and affected the entire Pac-12 coaching search and recruiting needs; we definitely change unis on a more frequent basis; while the success has been “recent”, we’ve been quite good for nearly 2 decades, and I’m confident in saying we’ve been way better than Okie for a much longer period; and let’s be honest, our wildly wealthy benefactor is way cooler than theirs.
Nonetheless, I see certain similarities. Now if I were to compare this year to any UO year, it would be our 2000-2001 year. While successful to that point, Joey (like Weeden) projected us to our greatest heights in a season that almost mirrors Okie’s: 11 (12) win seasons, inexplicable loss to Stanford (Iowa State), legit Heisman contender in Joey Harrington (Weeden, Blackmon), a Fiesta Bowl win over a powerful Colorado team (Stanford), a probable title game snub against Miami (LSU), and a final #2 ranking. It’s actually kind of crazy how similar the years are.
To my question: while Oregon had been above-average-to-good for a while before that season, 2000-2001 vaulted us into a different realm of college football. All of a sudden, there are wins over the likes of Michigan and Tennessee, multiple Pac-10/12 titles, Heisman contenders, top 15 recruiting classes, nationally televised games, a BCS championship appearance, Rose Bowl representations, countless College Gameday set ups, all-Americans, Doak Walker winners, players like Haloti Ngata, Jonathan Stewart, LaMichael James, and DeAnthony Thomas (who we stole from USC!! Still can’t believe it), and all kinds of other accolades that, up until 1994 (and really, 2001), simply didn’t happen. It’s been a crazy evolution and a fun ride.
So does this year in Oklahoma State propel them to the type of success that Oregon has had? I talked about this with OKstate friend of mine, and he’s pretty sure of it. But I’d love to hear the opinion of their rival. Do you see an upward trend, or was this an outlier? Can you even think about it objectively, being their in-state rival? Haha. I’m just sure that you know a lot about their program and might offer an interesting perspective.
I personally have doubts. As stated here, how do you replace Weeden and Blackmon at a school like Okie State? Does it happen now? Or in the future? I mean, you guys lose Sam Bradford and – boom – hello Landry Jones. We’re losing LaMichael James and here comes Kenjon Barner and De’Anthony Thomas. LSU loses Patrick Peterson, and replace him with Tyran Matthieu. Can OKstate do that? Will this year help them do that? How concerned are you – as in state rivals – with them competing with you (and Texas) in the near or distant future? Obviously, to beat OU and UT, they’re going to have to steal some recruits, much like we had to do to USC and Washington. Let me know what you guys think!
"We smoked it all."
And while the beginning doesn't look like it, this is a question for Sooner fans. Haha.
"We smoked it all."
No. One year doesn't mean jack. OSU hasn't been this competitive since the mid 80s.
So 1year in 30 doesn’t mean much.
CONSISTENTLY competitve
and that’s the key…they haven’t gotten to the point of being consistent and “reloading”. So far they have been like the mass of college football, complete depending on having a couple of stars and when they go, they fall off.
Personally, I think the Pokes have a lot the foundation in place to be the top level of a consistent top 25 type team.
Now 2012 yeah, they won’t be a top 10 team. The key is how competitive they are next year, and how quickly they comeback.
5 out of every ten years they are 500 or below.
No they arent theoregon of the Midwest. They get that moniker from tboones $$ not the football.
Agreed
But I certainly feel they’ve been trending this direction in the past three seasons, at least. They never have had the bowl success like this past group. I think two more years in a row and I’d be willing to say they’ve come around. Getting over the loss of Weeden AND Blackmon will be interesting…hell, OU couldn’t overcome the loss of Broyles.
2010 was rebuilding year - Dez Bryant / Zac Robinson left in 2009
Justin Blackmon was a pudgy 3 star recruit. OSU has one of the best strength coaches in the country. Turned Blackmon into 2 time Biletnikoff winner.
When Gundy was first hired he took only 700,000 so he could pay top dollar for assistants. now with T boone support he can still pay assistants top dollar and get paid himself.
I would hardly considered 2010 to be "rebuilding"
When 2009 was a very typical year for osu. Lost to Houston, texass & shut out by the worst OU team in 5 years.
by OU JJ on Jan 9, 2012 8:49 AM CST via iPhone app up reply actions
Lacked usable depth at QB. Zac shouldn't have been playing and Weeden was pure pass.
Last thought…
Preseason #1 ranking… 44-10
Did you get in on OU’s worst play of the season voting on ESPN?
All very interesting.
It’ll be interesting if they build some form of consistency after this. I also don’t agree they’re the Oregon of the Midwest. I think it’s a lazy comparison. It’ll be fun if they’re consistently competitive. I love beating Oregon state when they have a decent to good team.
"We smoked it all."
