Putting Landry's return in perspective....
I was reading comments on a post about Willie Martinez taking another job (which I fully support) and the conversation somehow turned into a comparison between Sam Bradford and Landry Jones. And I am wondering WHY? Do we have a choice between the two next year?
Landry might be OU's all time leading passer, but he is no Sam Bradford or Jason White. They both had intangibles that Landry just doesn't have. But last I checked, Bradford and White aren't backing Landry up... Blake Bell and Drew Allen are.
The hype surrounding Landry's return is not because people think he is the best QB in college... and I don't think he is either. Landry is only one piece of OU's championship puzzle. We have a legitimate shot of competing for a Big XII and national championship if everything else falls into place. By everything else, I mean:
- Firing Willie Martinez (and YES, I used the "F" word)
- Hiring Mike Stoops
- Heupel continues to use the "Belldozer" package in short yardage situations
- Dom Whaley recovering and continuing to dominate in the running game
- One of our WRs stepping up to be "that guy"
- Signing Green-Beckham wouldn't necessarily hurt either
All of these things will solidify the TEAM, and take pressure off of Landry. We are a program that does not have to rely heavily on QB play (Sam Bradford was just a pleasant surprise). Typically we just need our QB to simply add a passing dimension to our offense, and Landry can certainly do that better than Blake Bell and Drew Allen.

Agreed on the whole
I still want to see Blake get that chance. Who knows, given a legitimate read/progression with real, multiple routes, he might actually surprise some of you doubters.
I like Bell...
He has a very unselfish attitude and we all know what he can do as a running QB, but from what I’m hearing he just isn’t ready to be a passing threat. I don’t know that for a fact, but that the word around Norman.

Has to be the word
it’s the party line. When all he gets in games are one-man routes or pre-determined targets, no player is going to be successful. 10 times out of 10, when you say, “throw it to Johnny”, it is the ONE time Johnny gets covered all game. That’s how the game works.
did you happen to see what a "running QB" did to the Steelers yesterday?
A CFB team does not need 500-600 yds passing a game to win it! They need balance, balance in the pass run ratio, balance in the QB spot(actualy passing and running… I used the ‘R’ word. I really think if Bell can have very good spring and fall camps and Heupel will break the KW mold that Bell will see some quality time and prove he can throw the ball.
Bell could be the next Tbow type of CFB QB.
The one thing being a lot older has going for it, most of us older have seen more CFB than most younger people have seen web pages.
If our "running QB" can throw for 300+ on a defense as good as the Steelers...
then I wouldn’t call him a running QB. And I’m not going to call “that guy” one either. I watched that game and “that guy” beat the Steelers with his arm, not his legs. If Blake Bell can throw the ball as well as “that guy” did yesterday, then by all means lets start the Belldozer era in 2012.

316 minus 80. But yeah the running QB did put up some numbers in the air.
I think the point though is that you dont have to throw it 45 times a game to slay the dragon.
Good point JJ....
And I agree with that, if we become a pass heavy team that might be a problem. But the reason “that guy” was so effective throwing the ball yesterday is because the Steelers respected the run. On the flip side, OU has to have a respectable passing game in order to open up our running game. Not saying that Bell can’t provide that, but Landry has proven he can air it out from time to time.

Great point
And if a QB, at any level, cannot complete balls against man coverage with no safety in the middle…there’s a problem. That screams matchup problems. I can’t believe Pittsburgh never adjusted. Kansas City shut Denver down, for crying out loud!
As long as you're lining up parts of the championship puzzle
I wouldn’t mind adding a thousand yard plus season for one (or two) of the running backs, say Whaley for example, to your list. I imagine if he recovers and dominates as you suggest, that that will probably happen.
I think Trey Millard needs more carries...
I think Dom Whaley is out only potential 1000 yard rusher. I see Finch maxing out around 800, and that’s if he stays healthy. Trey Millard has a chance to be a serious power runner. If we can use Whaley, Finch, Millard, and Belldozer…. we can rely heavily on the run game.

the O-line will be key, obviously
but with the guys that are returning I think/hope there is great potential considering how much better they did with the run after Shead entered the picture. I don’t think it’s so much a case of relying upon the run heavily as just having it to complement the passing game and vice versa. As everyone remembers Bradford’s record setting season we had two backs over 1000 yards, even though the offense wasn’t what you’d call heavily run oriented. That combo works pretty well. :-)
Add to your list a very Dominant D,
the hiring Mike Stoops does not guarantee a dominant Defense, helps but doesn’t guarantee it.
The one thing being a lot older has going for it, most of us older have seen more CFB than most younger people have seen web pages.
That is certainly true...
We will still have problems. I just hope we can improve, dominance would be a bonus.
