Oklahoma Sooners: Tradition VS Swag

Photo

Oklahoma Sooner fans have long talked about the tradition of excellence that has been built at the University of Oklahoma. From generation to generation, the timelessness of the Football Uniforms has largely gone unchanged. Now players are beginning to call for new "swag" in a year that was dominated by the uniform combinations unveiled not only by the Oregon Ducks and the Oklahoma St. Cowboys. The first to put this out there was none other than Tony Jefferson saying

Screen_shot_2012-01-04_at_2

The second to follow suit was Brennan Clay saying

Screen_shot_2012-01-04_at_2

However, OU has been picked as one of the best old school unis and something people across the nation recognize at Oklahoma. Now I pose this question to you once again here at CCM:

I don't think we should get new uniforms.

But I do think we should wear an alternate about once a year or so. The throwbacks we had in 2003 were pretty sweet! Maybe a camo version to honor the troops too.

Dudes and dudettes

Those Oregon helmets were SICK!

I am fully in favor of going with a change-of-pace uni or two. I love the classic look, but dadgum those Oregon unis are slick. OSU’s all-blacks are badass too.

by SCKSChief on Jan 4, 2012 3:19 PM CST reply actions

Agreed

Tradition is something that a lot of schools wish they had, and IMO the flashy jerseys is how they try to compensate. Coincidence that the pukes happened to get those on their one good season? They wanted more attention, and the jerseys got it. However, I agree with dasoonerman that we could break out something different once a year.

Lets go back to Omaha!!!

by SoonerBornSoonerBred on Jan 4, 2012 3:21 PM CST reply actions

But

if some flashier unis are what gets the bigtime recruits, it’s worth looking into. However when you look at it in contrast places like LSU, Bama, UT, OU, Nebraska, USC all have traditional unis and do well annually. Even LSU went with a change-up uni this year and I liked the all-white look. Changing pace never hurts…unless you’re OU and you wear them the one day NO ONE shows up and you get embarrassed in Lubbock.

by SCKSChief on Jan 4, 2012 3:28 PM CST up reply actions

My problem with new swag

Is that our current unis (especially helmets) are instantly recognizable and top-notch.

Also, while I agree that Oregon’s kit looked good in the Rose this year, half of the time they look like vomit on a stick. I can only imagine how a sports fashion person could screw up OU’s. We’d probably end up with horsepig unis.

by TwoPalePonies on Jan 4, 2012 3:23 PM CST reply actions

If new uniforms "get you going"

You might choose a different career path.

In watching the Oregon game, I will admit to liking the helmets. However, having only ONE good element in over 52,000,000 combinations is not a good thing.

And I don’t trust Nike. Most of the stuff coming out looks like crap.

If I am to see tweaks, I want them minor. Black OU on a red helmet, or black numbers, or maybe face guards that incorporate this (hah):

seriously…..when was the last time you went to Ames? ever?

yeah...19 year old kids are so good at making decisions

You want ugly uniform combinations to get fired up: Go to Okie St, Oregon or Maryland

You want tradition and winning champions and being part of of something that is bigger then the end of your own arm and includes names like Vessals, Womack, Sims, Selmon, Bosworth, etc……You go to the University of Oklahoma!

OU Boomer Sooner New Uniforms I don't think so...

Half the time when your see the Pucks pardon me Ducks WE are like who is that? And now the Cowboys are in on it to. Our guys need to produce a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WIN then maybe fans will be open to some of their swagger ideas…But not Drastic….Oklahoma takes pride in our Tradition!

Interesting how boys from California....

who are only going to be here their minimum 3 years anyway have so much to say about the uniforms. Don’t think the old time fans would get mad? I guess they weren’t around in 1995 when we had stripes on the sleeves and it said Oklahoma instead of Sooners on the front, everyone was just a tad bit upset. Oh, and don’t forget about 2007 when the names on the back of the jerseys were removed. And I will NEVER forget the joke back in 1995 about going to a white helmet with Schooner Pride Stickers for big plays. Yeah, don’t molest with these uniforms. Even wearing Crimson pants makes me want to hurl.

So you need new uniforms to have a swagger about you?

They want swag, shut the F up and play football!! This is Oklahoma not oregon or osu. We have tradition, not fancy fufu uniforms. Stoops really needs to look at the kids he’s recruiting if they are more concerned about looks than titles. He should take a vote to see who wants new uni’s than not renew the schoarships of the ones that do.

While these kids may be prima donnas and spoiled, I still believe CF should be about them (even though it isn’t). If the majority of the team wants new unis then I say give it to them. Even better would be Stoops and company using new unis to signify a new era of Sooner football … one where defense rules AND we have a reliable run game.

That falls on preparation, coaching and performance. The thing with the unis is all about recruiting and image. Nobody believes that new uniforms would magic away the current issues.

I would rather see the changes in all the things that you mentioned above before I’d rather see a new uniform that’s nothing more than a recruiting school to get 5 star athletes in here, when alot of five stars turn out to be nothing more prima donna’s which i believe is a big part of the problem we had this year.

I’m getting tired of spoiled brats with a sense of entitlement…. An alternate uni why not but our color are recognized and our tradition is strong.

I can’t even imagine OU playing in other colors, and that helmet is Crimson / Red with the OU logo or white.

Granted the Ducks had a couple of good ones this year, but really for the past few seasons they had real ugly ones. The pokes, well anything is better than orange right ?? ;)

Seriously, the removal of the player name on the jersey I like it. Changing everything for nothing but the buzz no thank you.

by It'sTheVoice on Jan 5, 2012 7:14 PM CST up reply actions

Not at all

Great players and great coaches have gotten us an .8198 winning percentage. It’s the great players that have created the winning tradition OU fans are so proud of. The tradition didn’t create the winning. Where is Army’s football program today, or the University of Chicago’s? We’re going to continue to need great players and coaches in order to preserve that tradition.

by chuckb on Jan 6, 2012 4:02 PM CST up reply actions

Who cares why they choose OU?

Would you really rather have worse players who want to wear traditional uniforms or better players who want to wear “cool” uniforms? I’d rather have better players. National championships make it easy to overlook some hideous uniforms but great uniforms don’t make 5 win seasons look any better. Just ask UT!

by chuckb on Jan 6, 2012 4:03 PM CST up reply actions

Why does it have to be so drastic

i.e. “ADD society” that kids want to have cool new uniforms? And this is coming from a school that doesn’t change uni’s either.

by 40A on Jan 5, 2012 6:09 AM CST up reply actions

I'm going to have to agree

Its the kids that make the plays and do the winning..Not us as fans..
If a new uni would make them feel a lil SWAG then why not?

You get swagger by beating up on other teams. By knowing you can beat any team anytime.
New uniforms are not going to win games. Recruits come to OU, or they should come to OU, because of the chance to win championships every years. PERIOD!

by RGiskard on Jan 4, 2012 4:52 PM CST reply actions

I like the current unis

They are timeless. HOWEVER, I support a change only if we can get a really cool look. The better you look the better you play.

Also, I don’t know about you but I love that we have mouthy guys on the team. They aren’t embarrassing the program. They’re showing passion and intensity, which can be the difference in games.

by soonercowboy14 on Jan 4, 2012 6:18 PM CST reply actions

I disagree with some of that

The better you look the better you play? NO. the better you practice/prepare the better you play, how you look should have nothing to do with it.

"I feel sorry for peple who don't drink, when they wake up in the morning thats as good as they are gonna feel all day long." Frank Sinatra

by pitbull17 on Jan 4, 2012 6:28 PM CST up reply actions

The preparation is implied in the statement

I’ve always heard that growing up in sports, “The better you look, the better you play.” My old man taught me that when I was a kid, citing that as the reason for tucking in my shirt, squaring up my cap and making sure my socks matched. He also told me, “Looking good is half the battle.” He said this with an extended statement of when a team looks sharp, they can actually look like better players because of it and thus further gain an advantage.

Guys, we are all “old school” here. This is an understood and a given. Yet, we have to understand that just because the Colt Peacemaker won the West, it ain’t gonna win the next World War.

by SCKSChief on Jan 4, 2012 6:50 PM CST up reply actions

Good points here.

I like having some guys with different personalities and outspoken kids on the team. I never knew why T Jefferson caught so much flack for just suggesting he should have been on the All Big 12 team. That being said I would be disappointed to see the classic look leave for some flash in the pan new unis. I’ll sound real old here but I kind of cringe whenever I here the word swag nowadays. I think one thing wrong with the younger kids is they put too much emphasis on swag and very little on actual substance.

by BoomerWolverine on Jan 4, 2012 7:27 PM CST up reply actions

I've heard the same things all my life as well

And I happen to think that some of the best looking uni’s are the most simple. We have one of those. It’s not like they are trotting our guys out there with ripped up jersey’s and pants. I just don’t agree with the fact that new uniforms designs are gonna magicly make all the problems go away. Anybody think that if they were wearing a new uniform they’d have not lost the games they did this year? Those loses were from not being prepared to play, not because they didn’t look good.

I don't disagree

But it becomes a big time recruiting tool. I’m not trying to insinuate that the current unis are terrible. I just don’t get all the animosity.

by SCKSChief on Jan 4, 2012 10:23 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

none towards you

it’s about tradition, the uni’s are part of it. I wouldn’t be against an alternate to wear once a year, but i am against 384,000 different combinations of uniforms just to get some kid in here who only wants to be here because he’d look cool in the new uniform, we need kids interested in tradition and the hard work that goes with being a champion. If they are a high level recruit they have NFL aspirations, a great team who can get them should be more important than a jersey.

Exactly!

I want recruits who spent their childhood dreaming of wearing the crimson and cream, or in the least, kids who understand the tradition and hope to someday play a role in carrying on that tradition.

The crimson and cream means an awful lot to many of us. If a flashy uniform convinces you that your best opportunity lies with that school, then you’re not Sooner material to begin with.

by SoonerGoneEast on Jan 4, 2012 10:40 PM CST up reply actions

Gotcha

There is no wish on my part for 1,000 different combinations. I would like an alternate, that’s it. Even ONE alternate shows some swag and helps draw the eyes of some kids you may never even have a shot with otherwise.

by SCKSChief on Jan 5, 2012 7:39 AM CST up reply actions

I play HS lacrosse

Recently at one of our tournaments, a team came in with the most ridiculous looking unis. They were also the best team in the tournament, compared to our middle of the road team. Most of our team was scared because they had the rep of a good team, but a lot of my teammates lost all fear and respect for them as soon as we saw them. Sure we lost, but those guys (myself included) who didn’t fear them had pretty good games and we had confidence because we couldn’t take them seriously with their ugly unis. They lacked that swag. Had they looked good, it may have been a different story.

I don't care how old you are, if you are choosing your college or where you are going to play based on what they wear

Then you are not mature enough to make that decision on your own. Do you think Alabama recruits say “man I wish we could wear those sick Georgia uni’s from the bsu game?” hell no. And we are a lot closer to ’bama in terms of elite programs than Oregon or the pukes ever will be.

If you want to be Oregon, TJ, where defense is an option go ahead. Coming to Oklahoma (or bama, texass, USC or even penn state) is about more than douche bag uni’s.

Here's a great idea,

Go ahead and get the new uniforms, then don’t let them wear them in the games the first year… use them like a carrot on a stick, tell the little twits (players), if they win an NC they can take one uniform home with them to keep IF they win an NC.

Even as a Texas fan I don't want to see them change

You don’t mess with a great classic. Sure, you can update little things here and there, but I don’t want to have to look at some gaudy “swag” uniforms that aren’t actually swaggy but ugly as hell.
