Will we ever have a playoff system?
Ever since the season ended an outcry for a playoff system has been louder than ever before and myself included would like to see one but after thinking it over I don't think that will happen anytime soon mostly because of money. Realistically, if we have say a 10 team playoff the importance of the regular season is diminished greatly. For example take this season the LSU vs Alabama regular season game didnt matter at all when it came down to who was going to play in the championship. Another downside to a playoff is the quality of certain games could be lost, specifically for us the Red River Rivalry could be played twice a year instead of once, which to me diminishes the importance of the rivalry in the first place and could impact interest and not to mention ticket sales. The tv stations might not like a playoff neither, particularly because if repeat games do happen which is very likely for some teams ratings could suffer, we've seen what repeats do to ratings (LSU vs ALA) its not good, also the playoff would clash with the NFL playoffs, college basketball programming, and the NBA programming (which they wont like), pretty much what Im saying is college football would cut into someones money.
The TV stations might also not want to take a chance on a Cinderella team with a small fan base going to the championship because that could impact ratings too which is a no no and whoever is sponsoring the championship game might not like it because having a team with a small fan base could impact ticket sales. I wouldn't care if a cinderella team made it to the championship because they would have deserved it if they were winning in a playoff system but Im just saying the ones in charge wont like it because the potential loss of money is greater.
IMO I dont think we will ever see a true playoff system maybe a plus one, which is still doubtful. All in all I would be more content with them making a simple rule change stating that you must win your division and conference in order to play in the national championship game. Again, I personally want a playoff but I do see why we might not ever get one. Remember the Golden Rule, "Whoever Has The Gold Makes The Rule"

Death to the BCS
Great book that attempts to answer just that question (as well as provide a format for any playoff). The money would increase beyond anyone’s wildest dreams with a playoff.

There was no option for
“gosh I hope not”.
Being ‘old school’, and seeing how the BCS doesn’t work, I can only imagine some kind of human element screwing up the seeding, where darling teams (think Duke in MBB), get an easier path, year in and out.
Plus I can envision where these ‘playoff’ games become much like the super bowl, where there are only 23 actual fans from each school in attendance. I despise that about pro football. I certainly don’t want it any more prevalent in college than it is already.
Just my opinion.
seriously…..when was the last time you went to Ames? ever?
We'll most like have some kind of ugly espin abortion for a playoff
it will be organized and teams chosen by, games broadcast by and run by the whore Espin.
I really don’t care one way or another, all I want is the ESPIN WHORE out of college football period,
The one thing being a lot older has going for it, most of us older have seen more CFB than most younger people have seen web pages.
I would say the answer is yes
AND….it’s closer then we think.
I think we’ll have either a Seeded 4-team play off (I’ve heard the confusing term Seeded Plus-One, which isn’t really a Plus-one set up) OR a Plus-one.
the difference is in a Plus-one, the conferences go play their bowls, and there is no set up besides the conference contractual tie in, and the best 2 teams after New Year’s Day (most assume we go back to the Bowls on New Year’s Day) get to play each other for a national championship.
Seeded, is just that, a four team playoff, regardless of the name. It could be the top 4 ranked teams in a BCS type system, OR….it could be the top 4 ranked conference champions, OR…it could be the top 4 ranked conference champs, if there are only 4 super-conferences, where a sudo-semi-final round could be played in the conference championship games.
I should add, that the current BCS TV contract is up in 2014
and I think we’ll see a 4 Team Playoff of some sort (seeded or plus one) in 2015
