Sooners get 2012 commit #19 in Illinois RB David Smith
At an announcement ceremony this afternoon, Bremen H.S. running back David Smith confirmed that he will be joining the Oklahoma Soonersclass of 2012. Smith had a final two of OU and West Virginia and called his decision today "the opportunity of a lifetime." Smith is a kid who repeatedly professed his admiration for Oklahoma and stated how excited he was to get that scholarship offer from the Sooners. So given his comments, this news doesn't necessarily come as a surprise but that doesn't make it any less exciting for the young man or Sooner Nation.
Smith becomes the Sooners 19th verbal commitment for 2012 and chose Oklahoma after taking his final official visit to Norman just this past weekend.
Smith figures to be a perfect compliment to the running backs currently on campus as he is a bigger, more powerful back paired with the likes of current Sooners Roy Finch and Brennan Clayamong others. The Sooners will again have no shortage of options at the RB spot in 2012 with the previously mentioned Clay & Finch as well as Dominique Whaleycoming back from a broken ankle, redshirt freshman Danzel Williams, and Smith's now fellow classmates Alex Ross and Daniel Brooks.
Welcome to Sooner Nation David!

How is this kid just a 3 Star?
This kid can ball…BOOMER SOONER DAVID!!!
Apparently he's a lot faster than I've given him credit for as well
Evidently he’s a pretty accomplished track star and I’ve read he’ll be participating in a Junior Olympics trial in the 100m. I guess he’s run in the mid 10 second range, which translates to legit 4.4 speed. Maybe it’s his long stride or upright running style on film that doesn’t do his speed justice.
Didn’t mean to short change ya there Dave!
We questioned Dom's breakaway speed till texass as well.
Sometimes it doesn’t show up well on film
"I feel sorry for peple who don't drink, when they wake up in the morning thats as good as they are gonna feel all day long." Frank Sinatra
it is the long stride
look back at the texasss game film. On his breakaway TD the dude is striding monstrous yards and his stride actually gets longer gets longer with each yard. If I remember correctly I think there was one stride that as 12’

Run Smitty Run
look at the entire video. The kids looks fast to me. Welcome aboard David.
When he plants and turns upfield, no one is catching him
Welcome to the Sooner Nation!
Rumor has it that Texas is about to sign a huge corporate sponsorship deal for the Longhorn Network. They just have to decide which brand represents them best: Dyson, Eureka or Hoover.

yeah
He’s sprinting right between DBs and they can’t catch up.

You can really see it when he runs by people
Which I know reads like a total captain obvious statement, but in the open field on his film I don’t think his speed is as obvious.
Not sure he's a power running game back
but dang, he’s got great feet and vision in traffic (a la spread run game). Really sudden in his breaks too…has nice burst at the second level. Wonder what the competition is like…
All said and done, glad to have him!
Well I said that b/c he's already almost 200 lbs
And he hasn’t been exposed to a D-I S&C program. You’d have to think he could add another 10 pounds of muscle and be a “bigger” back in our system.
I like the kind of back he is
That WVU style RB is what OU needs…some lead in the pencil to go with the shakes and vision. Wasn’t arguing with your assessment, just stating observations.

beats the hell out of 145 like finchy

Theres one clip in that video where he is running down the near sideline and
is absolutely TORCHING the defense. Plus (and I know this is a highlight video) but this kid barely ever gets tackled…When Smitty gets this kid on some college weight and nutrition programs, watch out…and hes lining up in the slot running outs and seams…does this kid remind anyone else of Murray in his later years? 3 STARS IS TOO LOW FOR THIS KID
There is another one, early in the clip
And as he’s going into the endzone he stiff arms a kid and almost puts him out the back of the end zone. Very impressive IMO.
Like I said in the post about his visit
He said OU is his dream school, it can’t be stated enough how important it is that a kid gets to go where he wants. If a kid is where he’s always wanted to be he’ll run through a brick wall for you. That’s what this team needs more of.
"I feel sorry for peple who don't drink, when they wake up in the morning thats as good as they are gonna feel all day long." Frank Sinatra
Could not agree more
I meant to put that in my post right at the end of that first paragraph. I absolutely love to get kids who see OU as their dream school. Just feel like they give 1000% of themselves to OU.
Love a kid who loves the school, not just the coaches or the brand
Thats what I like to see

Looks good but
He is from what would be a small 3a school in Texas. The competition on the film looks real bad and very slow. I just hope we are not going by the hype and the kid has some talent. But to me he looks like a div 11 bench player.
Vilkey
Boomer Sooner
kinda like Ronell Lewis?
Who was from a class B school. was only a 3 star and had only played 1 year of 11 man, that kind of div 11 bench player?
"I feel sorry for peple who don't drink, when they wake up in the morning thats as good as they are gonna feel all day long." Frank Sinatra
not trying to be a douche
you just never know what it is the coaches see.
"I feel sorry for peple who don't drink, when they wake up in the morning thats as good as they are gonna feel all day long." Frank Sinatra
Could have swore he was a 3 with somebody.
but the point remains valid
"I feel sorry for peple who don't drink, when they wake up in the morning thats as good as they are gonna feel all day long." Frank Sinatra
You're certainly welcome to your opinion
But I’ll reserve judgment at least until he gets on campus and much more likely until he plays an actual game. Pretty early IMO to call him a career bench player. I’d venture to guess before this season we all would have called Dom Whaley the same and I think he proved a lot of people, myself included, very very wrong this past season.
For a kid that's only 18
A lot changes by the time he is a sophomore. Put him with a D1 strength program, and combine that with what the coaches must see in the guy mentally, and see what happens
To judge him at this point is just not fair or even relevant imo

Wasn't AD from a 3A school?
Don’t know Texas very well, but I thought I’d heard that.

Smaller I believe. Been to Palestine twice. Smaller than chickasha, Seminole
Am trying to think of a similar size in oklahoma
Stigler

Yeah something like these. I grew up in a small 3a. And it's a lot bigger than Palestine!
Maybe like Cleveland, Stilwell…
Most kids out of high school would just sit on the bench
It’s the potential you have to judge at this point. He will have all the tools for success and he seems like the kind of kid who will utilize them.

BOOOMER!

The kid has good vision of the field
seems to find the opening and can cut to it. I don’t think I ever saw him run directly into the pile of linemen. He did have a showboat incident at the first of the clip where he went in the ‘highsteppin’ mode. Just an observation.
