Brent Venables to West Virginia?

Some talk started to surface a couple days ago on the interwebs about Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables being mentioned for the vacant West Virginia DC job. It was quickly dismissed as ridiculous, but there has been a little bit of a firestorm in Oklahoma circles this morning courtesy of the Tulsa World's Dave Sittle and his Twitter account. I'm certainly no Twitter expert, but I'll do my best to try and recap what all has been said. Also, not that it really matters but personally I've never really been that big a fan of Sittler's. That said, he's been in OK forever and surely has developed a considerable amount of sources so while I wouldn't totally dismiss what he's started today I still find it hard to believe Venables would leave. But enough of that, onto the tweets!

Star-divide

Dave Sittler
OU sources confirmed Brent Venables has been offered defensive coordinator job at West Virginia and Stoops is "fighting hard to keep him."
Dave Sittler
OU sources: "Stoops has enlisted help of his AD and others to convince Brent to stay." A decision could come later today.
Dave Sittler
Stoops hasn't responded to texts about Venables, sources indicated "the West Virginia deal is happening, and Brent has a decision to make."
Dave Sittler
Venables has healthy respect for Holgorsen's offensive mind. If he's calling defensive signals he might settle for co-title with DeForest.
Dave Sittler
OU source: Venables will still have strong influence if he stays at OU, but Mike will have final say.
Dave Sittler
West Virginia needs Venables' decision ASAP because dead period in recruiting is about to end.
Dave Sittler
Source: OU pulling out "the big guns" to convince Venables to stay. I would assume that would mean the Top Gun - President Boren.
Dave Sittler
Stoops' text this morning on Mike and Willie said announcement could happen late morning. Venables' sitatuion could be hold up.

Would you stay?

Would you stay if you basically got demoted? That’s really what’s happening if the reports are to be believed. Mainly that Mike gets final say. I am leading an organization currently. I don’t think I would be able to stay with the organization if I wasn’t able to continue even jn a shared leadership role without the same level of current influence. So let me be the first to say, goodbye to BV. Hope he doesn’t take our recruits with him!!!!!!

I don't know

This just seems odd to me. I mean you make a very valid point, but this kind of thing coming out almost gives the impression as if Venables wasn’t on board w/ Mike coming back and I just really find it hard to believe that Bob wouldn’t have run that through BV first.

by Jordan Esco on Jan 12, 2012 11:16 AM CST up reply actions

I'm sure he did run it by BV,

but what’s BV supposed to say? “Sorry Bob, it’s me or Mike, you can’t have your cake and eat it too.” The most foolish thing BV could have done would have been to force Bob to choose between him and Mike. If I were in BV’s position I would agree to anything to try and maintain my position, but when something else came along I would probably be far more tempted than I would have been prior to being told I was no longer “the man.”

by SoonerGoneEast on Jan 12, 2012 12:01 PM CST up reply actions

My only issue w/ that is

By all accounts, Venables has not been acting like a guy whose future at OU was in jeopardy. Why would he still be out recruiting as hard as he’s been when they pulled Martinez a couple weeks ago?

by Jordan Esco on Jan 12, 2012 12:14 PM CST up reply actions

His future isn't in jeopardy,

and it’s pretty doubtful that he would even be getting a pay cut now that he has less responsibility. If anything he might be jockeying for a pay raise by putting himself out there on the market. Who knows?

I’m just glad to see a shakeup of any kind at this point. Maybe, just maybe Bob Stoops is as fired up as everyone else about this dissapointment of a season.

Yes

The lateral move doesn’t make a lot of sense. However, change is needed. I would not be opposed to trying to bring in a position coach from Bama as a co-coordinator…maybe the DB coach?

it's always been like that, Too many Chiefs and Not enough Indians

The one thing being a lot older has going for it, most of us older have seen more CFB than most younger people have seen web pages.

by scarab on Jan 12, 2012 3:38 PM CST up reply actions

That's the first thing I noticed, too

The “Mike will have final say” stuff is powerful. It may not be about WVU vs. OU. That’s a demotion to BV and I don’t really think that I’d stay under those circumstances. If I were Venables, I’d be of the opinion that I’d earned enough stroke at OU to not be demoted and it’s not like WVU is KU or something like that. That sounds like a big slap in the face to me.

Hate to be "that guy"

But if you remember after the Baylor game I said that BV was in his last season at OU. I think CrimsonReign may be on to something here.

by ccmachine on Jan 12, 2012 11:20 AM CST reply actions

I know some are ready to be rid of Venables

but I hope he stays. I think the pair of them together could do quite well.

This is such a change from the previous reports that said BV was “100% on board” with bring Mike back. Has he now decided he’s pi$$ed about the whole thing? Wierd.

I hope he stays too.

However, this is the only scenario where I would want him to stay. Venables brings a lot of experience to the table, he just wasn’t capable of handling it all on his own IMO. Furthermore, I think M. Stoops would be much better off if Venables stayed.

by SoonerGoneEast on Jan 12, 2012 12:05 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

They’re probably a little panicked if this is all true. I think they feel like they need him to keep working with the LB’s for Mike to have a chance at the kind of success he enjoyed before. I’m sure Mike himself wants BV to stay.

Agree w/ all of you

I certainly had my issues w/ the guy, but I definitely want him to stay as well. I’ll be incredibly disappointed if he chooses to leave.

by Jordan Esco on Jan 12, 2012 12:13 PM CST up reply actions

The only thing that makes me wonder about the whole deal

Is why the lateral move? There were lots of head jobs out there, that were pretty good jobs and nothing. Still, I’m sure he sees the writing on the wall with Mike coming back. I guess I’ll live either way.

by SCKSChief on Jan 13, 2012 9:24 AM CST up reply actions

This is a bunch of crap

Why don’t they just say Bob is going to coach the Raiders. Lord knows they don’t have to honor it after its determined false.

by Umm... Is that your final answer? on Jan 12, 2012 11:41 AM CST reply actions

Sittler may be from this area forever and tons of relaible contacts,

but I have been reading his stores and reports since the early 70’s. He is full of it and it is not past him to dream something up and write about it for days. The guys at the Tulsa World have no reins on them.

The one thing being a lot older has going for it, most of us older have seen more CFB than most younger people have seen web pages.

by scarab on Jan 12, 2012 3:42 PM CST up reply actions

Perhaps

but if BV is getting demoted, maybe he’s just shopping for the best offer.

by chuckb on Jan 12, 2012 7:53 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe Sittler is BV's agent?

Sure seems like he’s trying to help BV get more money. He’s thrown out at least 3-5 schools going after BV in the last 24 hours.

Be careful what you wish for

How many times have I seen posts on this site “FIRE VENABLES” and now that rumors imply he might leave, y’all are freaking out. Make up your mind.

true

but as jtesooner said above they are just slinging stuff around like it matters. This feels like Jr High rumors its so pathetic.

If he wants to leave so be it. I just wish he would have taken a Head Coaching gig when he could rather than looking for table scraps.

by Umm... Is that your final answer? on Jan 12, 2012 12:20 PM CST up reply actions

table scraps?

Wondering why you’d refer to WVU as table scraps? While we might not be on Oklahoma’s level, we did have a pretty good season with a first year head coach. In the most recent Orange Bowl we put a pretty good whoopin’ on the ACC champ and in the process set or tied 14 records (BCS or Orange Bowl). We’re 95-33 over the past 10 years – close to the top 10 for that. We’re 3-0 in BCS bowls. That’s the same amount of victories as Oklahoma. You’re better at loosing BCS bowls with 5. And golly-gee, I seem to remember an absolute spanking we put on someone in the Fiesta Bowl in 2007-08. I just can’t remember who it was . . . . you’ll have to help me with that school. All you BIG timers seem to run together.

by Mountaineer Dude on Jan 12, 2012 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

MD, pretty big crap you speak of

I don’t think U…ITYFA was talking smack about WVU but rather Coach V was willing to take a lateral move anywhere in general.

Now for the way you started off on this forum, I am willing to bet you didn’t make many friends with your jaws today.

ACROSTICS

I was never good at acrostics. I reread your post several times and don’t see you referring to it as a lateral move. Even had a guy in the office look at it and he thought it was an slur against WVU. Most of what we’re hearing is that BV would be DC and DeForest will be a position coach.

Still, I think you were referring to our program but I’ll take you at your word. My apologies for snapping at you . . .

For the record

there are several of us here who did not subscribe to that view…..including myself. I never thought BV was as good as Mike was as a DC, but as a LB coach and when it comes to run defense I think BV is very good indeed. So there’s no bipolar disorder here on my part.

Just responding to the line where we were supposed to “make up our mind.” But as you say, there were many such calls in the heat of the moment.

Speaking for myself only

I’m not broken up to see Venables go. I think our Defense needs some new blood/ideas. Heck I think the whole coaching staff could use that.

That said, I don’t get the excitement of Mike Stoops return. He was OK,and I think he was slightly better then Venables, as Def. Coordinator, but not by much, and he’s the opposite of “new blood/ideas”

by Redhawk on Jan 12, 2012 1:08 PM CST up reply actions

I have been more negative than most on his returning

but that is kind of my knee jerk reaction against magic cures and such. I am actually excited….at least somewhat, that maybe Mike can bring back some of the old magic. But empirically speaking, there is nothing over the last several years to really suggest that. I know it’s not the same being HC and not having the same caliber recruits, but I still felt he should have been able to do much better than he did on D. I guess I’m torn: In my heart I want to believe he is going to turn things around, but my head says “where’s the proof?”

This blog kind of sums up some of the relevant thoughts some of us have had on this D. Granted, the source is someone who evidently enjoys being inflammatory and it is from over a month ago, but still some legitimate points.

I refuse to believe

that Venables was not on board with this from the git-go. I don’t think Bob would do that to him, even for his brother. Especially based on his insistence to NOT fire an assistant. I believe that Stoops has gone to the board of regents and told them that if they want to keep quality assistant coaches they need to pay them. My God, muschump was making almost a mil at texASS and multiple assistant/coordinators in the sec make 600K+.

Everything you read or hear about Dana does not make you think bv would head there. If anything wsu would have been better..just imo

If he thought the writing was on the wall re MS return,

it might not have been easy for him to oppose it, especially if he wasn’t entertaining other offers. Now, he might be reconsidering. I imagine they might redefine the position so that it seems like more of a lateral move than a demotion, and throw in a nice pay raise along with it. If so, maybe it’ll be harder for him to leave.

by soonermusic on Jan 12, 2012 12:54 PM CST reply actions

I don’t see Venables going to WVU. If hes splitting duties with DeForest, then at best its a lateral move. And why do that when you are at OU. No offense, but going to WVU would be a downgrade if hes going to be a CO-DC.

Losing Brent would not be the end of the world...

I am one of the guilty people that have knee-jerkingly (or prematurely to be correct) called for BV’s head on a platter served chilled. But I do understand what he brings to our defense. If we are able to keep him and Mike Stoops around for a few years, our defense will be legit again.

But if he does decided to go, I think we can still be pretty good. The key is that Bob has to bring in some fesh blood and not just pull someone from an office job at OU. But again, I hope BV stays.

I don't want him to go

he’s an outstanding recruiter and seems to be very well liked by the players. I think the improvement we’ll see with Mike is that his blitz package will be totally different, BV likes to zone blitz and that is where we got burned so much this year with missed assignments. MS will run man blitzes 99% of the time which should limit the really big plays.

This is exactly how I feel about it. Couldn’t have said it better. I can’t think of a better scenerio for the OU D than to have both of them on the sidelines next year and hopefully for several more.

by OkieU on Jan 12, 2012 10:14 PM CST up reply actions

BV can leave

my problem is I do not want him going to a conference school. If WVU is not going to be in conference for a couple of years then let him go but he knows our current offense to well to let him go in conference. With MS I am OK with BV staying but BV’s marketability will be shot and he will just have to learn to live with $500k a year, BS type hours [cush] and living in Norman. Personally, I would kill for that gig.

Maybe we’ll start to see some movement pretty soon and know what all will be happening for sure.

Anybody hear BV turned West Virginia down?

I heard on the tulsa animal he turned them down, but that he was strongly considering clemson because they we’re offering big money, like 1.2 or so million a year to be a DC!

Reading some of Dabo's comments concerning K. Steele, and in general;

it looks like you would have to pay that much to land a D-coord.

well they pay their OC 1.3 mill

they would have to make it close to that to get anybody with experience
