California or Bust! Conference Realignment Getting Closer. OR: The Okies are Coming part 2
via www.shorpy.com
We are getting closer on Conference Realignment. SEC Presidents are voting today, based on several reports on twitter from various sports writers. If A&M has enough votes (and I assume they will), It is expected there will be a formal announcement on Wednesday of A&M joining the SEC.
Next up will be Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. I've heard that OU and OSU will announce the day after A&M, which would be Thursday. However, OSU plays Arizona at T. Boone Pickens. That would be good cover to have PAC president Larry Scott in Oklahoma. I would expect OU and OSU would announce on Friday, while Mr. Scott is in the state.
The best article out so far on updating the current situation is from Sports Illustrated's Andy Staples and you can read it all here. There are several big questions on the table right now, that we simply don't have answers to like:
1) Who will be #14 for the SEC?
2) Will the PAC go to 16 and who will be #15 & #16?
3) Will the PAC add Kansas and Missouri, going to 16, and still leave 2 tables open for Texas and Texas Tech and go to 18 in the future?
So far, it seems that Texas is holding strong and fast to the idea that they can make the Big 12 work, and keep their precious. Their PRECIOUS!!! Below is a recent picture of UT Athletic Director Deloss Dodds:
Also here is a blog opinion piece on why UT might be stalling. Get this....it's about making UT wanting a better deal for UT.....shocking conclusion I know! It did have some good points.

I'm tired of the Longhorns
OU doesn’t need the Whorns as much as they need us. Let them go indy but beware remember when Mack said he would never schedule a OOC game again like Ohio St.? Well guess what Mack if you go indy you will have to fill that schedule with good teams just to get into a BCS game. OU on the other hand will have USC and Oregon on their schedule every year.
Josh Hamilton: "I just show up, look at the lineup and play where I’m told. If they want me to catch, I’ll catch."
Jon Daniels on relationship with #Rangers Young: "I’d love to walk in and hug everybody every day, but that’s not critical to us winning." 2/19/11
Two points
1) I think everyone is tired of the Longhorns regardless of conference affiliation
2) Texas has scheduled some big names in the future (USC and Notre Dame [yea, I know they are a has-been])
I support the NBA player's union.
Is it just me…
…or is texass looking at this through orange colored glasses. This is blatant homerism, even for texass. They need to stop this and start behaving like normal people. I saw a question asking if the ACC rumor was just a ploy to get a move out of Scott. They are playing with fire, and they are still saying that they might join the PAC 16 until the lhn is up and going good, then go independent. I don’t think Scott will accept that, neither will the other PAC 12 school presidents.
They need to pull their heads out of their collective asses (sorry CCM) and swallow some pride. The world does not revolve around texass.
last rumor I heard
was if the PAC didn’t accept Texas and the LHN as it is right now…no revenue sharing, no league ownership, then Texas would just stay in the Big 12, and reform it with other Texas schools like SMU, Houston, UTEP, UTSA, Rice, etc.
This was what I was calling the New-SW Conference option….I really didn’t think UT would be so stubborn and egotistical to actually do it, but I’m think that’s their plan now.
UT is demanding and expecting from the PAC a special deal….cause their Texass
It makes me so happy that the PAC 12 is telling Texass to fall in line like everyone else or you’re not welcome at the party. Let’s hope they stick to their guns.
What a joke a “reformed” Big 12 would be.

I'm hearing rumors BYU is back on the table
that they have an offer in hand from the Big12. Take with salt please.

Maybe they do, but OU isn’t going to be in the Big 12 by the end of this month for the 2012 season and beyond. I think Boren and Co. are pissed off at the whole situation and see the additional $ OU could make by going West, sees that OU will definitely get the AAU status within 10 years, would raise the academic profile of the University (Boren has done a GREAT job of that), and OU would, at last, have conference stability.
by SoonerSunDevil on Sep 6, 2011 5:38 PM CDT up reply actions
I dont think the Texas folk understand how important gaining that AAU status is for the school.
Moving conferences is more than just sports. Its the whole institution and the state.
Arkansas left the SW conference because of texass. Nebraska left the Big 12 because of texass. aTm is leaving because of texass. OU/OSU are leaving the Big 12 because of texass. Don’t they see the trend?
Texass is the opposite of King Midas…everything texass touch turns to s@%*.
texass exudes s@%*
it’s in the name. a priori.

yes they do
texass for texassians, the all smell like texASS
The one thing being a lot older has going for it, most of us older have seen more CFB than most younger people have seen web pages.
I'm skeptical of this
Texas cannot honestly feel that they would be better off in a re-made SWC w/ SMU, Houston, and Rice than in the PAC-whatever or SEC. I’m not saying you didn’t hear that rumor. I’m just saying that I don’t believe that’s really what UT wants.
Pat Jones said it on the tulsa animal today too.
I heard this exact same thing earlier so it’s at the very least got some sort of legs to it.

is now saying that UT will/could make more in rebuilt SW conference. It’s looking more like this is a real option…surprisingly enough
I went to link, and then the site didn’t load……
pure unadulterated arrogance can lead a person straight into the bowels of hell
and texass has that kind of arrogance. Anyone who stays with can counton going to the Toilet Bowl every single year. Bank IT

I guess I'm resigned to the fact that the PAC whatever is where we're going...
The thing that concerns me is a PAC 16 East Division won’t really be that strong without Texas, but at the same time the best part about going there would be to finally cut ties with the whorns and leave their sorry a$$e$ behind. I’m not sure how much of a win this is. And for those thinking we’re going to start playing USC and Oregon every year, think again. Probably more like once every 3 years. Meanwhile we’ll have to be content trying to build up a resume while playing the likes of Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Kansas. Great…..real exciting…..

We’ll have a conference championship game. We might play USC or Oregon twice in a year in that scenario. A Pac-14 without Texas is just as strong as the current version of the Big 12.

or stronger
"I feel sorry for peple who don't drink, when they wake up in the morning thats as good as they are gonna feel all day long." Frank Sinatra
I'm talking about the division, not the conference.
No one seems to even know how often we would play teams from the other division in a 16-team conference…..or how many OOC opponents we would book each year. If we have 7 other opponents in our division that we play every year plus 2 or 3 OOC opponents (?), do the math. We won’t even get through everyone in the other division in 3 years let alone 2. So if it switches where we play at their stadium 1 year and then they come to ours the next, theoretically it could be 6 years before we ever get the Trojans in Norman.

in a 14 team conference
I would assume every 4th year. But there is 2 LA teams, and 2 Northern teams, which means we would get one game a year in California.
In a 16 game conference it gets harder. If it’s a Pod System, we would get a game in Cali every other year I would figure.
The scheduling for a 16 team conference would be:
7 games round-robin within the division
2 inter-division games (1 home, 1 away)
3 OOC games
Possible championship game
I support the NBA player's union.
I remember reading that OOC could be a thing of the past if Super Conferences take hold.
Which I’m not opposed to…

Sooner fans, we promise to have the officiating fixed by the time you arrive.
I think UT just told us to F off
"I feel comfortable that we’ll end up in a situation that’s right for the University of Texas, whether that’s belonging to a conference or not," said R. And now the PAC doesn't have too.
I see no problem with that.

Stoops pretty much gave them the finger too....
saying the rivalry was no longer “necessary” and that we may just move to the PAC 12 without them. Anyone who missed it can read it here.
At least if we do split now, we can split after crushing them one last time as a nice F-U on our way out the door. Stoops vs Brown would then be at 8 for 12 or something like that.

Been reading all the comments from both UT and OK today.
I really hope OK doesn’t flinch now. If they pass up this chance and try to save the Big 12 I think it might be the last time for at least till the TV contracts are done that the PAC will offer it. You can’t lead someone on two years in a row and leave them hanging. It creates bad blood. And I hope they realize UT is really not who you want to hitch your wagon to. I personally would LOVE OK and OK St to join up with us, and at this point after reading all this stuff hte last two weeks, and reading the comments Texas fans are making I honestly want them to reject coming to the PAC cuz i dont want them here. I would much rather have OK, OK st, Missu, and KU. I appreciate all those universities and their fans. Im sick of Texas fans and want them to just fall apart now. I just hope the rest of you don’t fall with them.
With any luck things play out like I have heard. SEC offering A&M a spot tomorrow, and Boren announces on Thursday they are joining the PAC. Would make my week.
it doesn't take long
to learn what pompous asses UT fans are, and sadly that’s the culture of their University too. They truly think “BUT we’re TEXAS” means somthing
I am happy for utexass
they deserve everything they have fought for and achieved….. total nothingness
The one thing being a lot older has going for it, most of us older have seen more CFB than most younger people have seen web pages.
I just happened to see a comment you made on BON
advising Texass not to burn too many bridges by insisting on their LHN….and you noticed the response you got from a whorn called “40AS” where he actually claims Texas can do what they want because they are a national brand and Oklahoma is not…..classic whorn jackassery. At this point we will all be happier if they take their blocks and go elsewhere.
It’s also pretty funny to note how wrong so many of them have been about the RRS….I read sooo many of them swearing by the almighty that no matter what happens, the rivalry with Oklahoma will never go away. They were so sure. They are deluded….they think they are so indispensible.
Like Redhawk said, it doesn’t take long to learn you’re dealing with arrogance that borders on pathological.

Funny thing is i live up in WA, but i follow all sports.
You are right though it doesn’t take long to get sick of their BS. I was just pointing out to them a different way of thinking. Guess htat was my mistake.
Sounds like the first domino is starting to fall though. Hopefully we will hear tomorrow morning.
Define National Brand
Texas is a national brand in that everyone knows the name. That is very different from wanting to follow the team. Texas view that they can be a successful independent is ludicrous. Notre Dame has a legit national following, whether you like them or hate them. As a Michigan fan…
Even Notre Dame is having trouble sustaining its independence successfully, and they have the national audience.
Texas doesn’t come close. Yes their grads go everywhere, so they will have an 0.1 share of the audience in every market. Might as well broadcast online. I live in Northern Virginia now, all of their fans fit into one bar. (decent bar I will admit)
They will be Army as an independent. Wish them well as they sink into obscurity.
The alternative is a Big-12 with Texas and the toddlers. What compelling television! It will prove the point of rough revenue equality in a conference. At lest the TV dollars, then everyone for themselves on the rest of the revenue. Texas would still have an advantage just on the other revenue. Not enough apparently. So it would be Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, Kansas State and some combination of ( everyone has a scenario, does it matter?) Kansas, Iowa State, Missouri, Houston, TCU, SMU, New Mexico, Colorado State, Air Force, BYU, Louisiana Tech, Boise State, UNLV, San Diego State, etc. Not exactly compelling programming.

Aggies cry & whine. Horns sit & gloat.
Am beginning to see the positives of west Texas & why the tech fans are so out there. Ya gotta feel for them, they might be the most normal & realistic of the texians …. Lol

and remember they will be sit and gloating in the Toilet Bowl they were in last year
It may get so bad and stink so much that the nice City of Austin tells utexass to leave town.

RRR
Just now seeing Stoops latest comment and the Tired of texas reaction here.
I can’t imagine the RRR goes anywhere……
but…. if it does.. how would OU feel about maintaining a OCC game with the aggies as a joint FU to texas ?
Not in Dallas.. i realize the RRR is sacred and would be put to rest… still home and home. Personally, I’d miss playing you guys so I’d love to see that game continue.
Hope the SEC announcement goes through Wed ( Baylor might be a problem) and hope you guys get your PAC wish. Gig’em
Newcomer from another “cream and crimson” school.
Let’s say that Texas blows up the Big XII. Which would OU prefer: The Pac-12 or the Big Ten? Personally, I think the Big Ten is a better fit, plus you get the rivalry with Nebraska back.
One caveat: as I understand it, OU and Ok. St. are bound together by the Oklahoma legislature. Any truth to that?
We rise. They fall.
