Breaking News: Defensive End Ronnell Lewis Is Eligible To Crush Quarterbacks This Fall

Ladies and gentlemen its officially Hammer Time! All summer long rumors have been surfacing that Oklahoma's Ronnell Lewis was in trouble academically and could have to sit out this fall. As of now that rumor is officially dead.

Fact is, Lewis did take a summer course and he passed it with flying colors. He's free and clear now to take over Jeremy Beal's vacant spot on the defensive line and create havoc all over the field. With the speed of a linebacker and the power of a defensive linemen mixed with hitting power that's unparalleled he will be one of Oklahoma's most feared defensive weapons this fall.

Its time to unleash the beast...better known as The Hammer.

Damn I saw

way corny

But I don’t care, it’s Hammer Time baby!!!

This is HUGE for this defense. Bigger than getting Fleming back IMO.

love your enthusiasm

but that’s a stretch. it’ll be fun to watch, for sure.

by evenyoudorn on Jul 22, 2011 8:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Why is that?

If he had been ineligible, who was going to man that other starting DE spot? A redshirt freshman with zero experience in Geneo Grissom? A guy in David King who while a good player is certainly no dominant pass rush threat? A true freshman in Nathan Hughes?

My point is we were MUCH better off at CB if Fleming hadn’t made it back than we would have been at DE if Ronnell wasn’t available. By all accounts Gabe Lynn was progressing very nicely and even if that didn’t work we always had an ace up our sleeve with Aaron Colvin.

I’d welcome your take on how/why I’m wrong as I’d be happy to be proven wrong, but I’m not sure I see your argument with this one.

This is how you're wrong...

At defensive end…

If you need experience on the field, you go with David King or R.J. Washington… if you need some fresh legs, you go with Geneo Grissom or Chuka Ndulue… David King is probably the 3rd DE in the 50-front defense, so with him at DE, you can run a 3-man front and put Corey Nelson on the field in a 3-4 look.

At cornerback…
You have Gabe Lynn. He’s supposed to be good and very limited experience in games. You better hope to hell he works out, because his backup is a redshirt Freshman wide receiver…

Lynn may be a better corner than King/Washington are DEs, but we’re much deeper at DE than we are at CB. Lynn goes down, there’s NO experience behind him.

Further, if I had to throw a guy with limited experience out onto the field… I’d go with a DE whose job can be simplified to “Find the ball, hit the guy with the ball” over a corner who has to understand a whole package of zone coverage schemes and man-coverage responsibilities before he’s even got a chance of playing halfway decent.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree

If Lewis plays up to his potential, he could be a game changing presence at DE. Without him, as you detailed, we’d be looking at Frank Alexander, who while being a solid player will never be confused with a Terrell Suggs, and David King who is even less dynamic of a pass rusher than Alexander. Even if you want to include R.J., the kid has been here three years and never played a significant snap, so while I’ve always questioned why that is I can’t give you that one. I mean if it’s as simple as you say “Find the ball, hit the guy with the ball”, how has he yet to see the field? Obviously what OU asks their DE to do is not quite that simplistic.

Grissom and Hughes are the two I’d be and am most excited about, easily.

As for Lynn, I’m not sure why you think they couldn’t simply move Colvin back to CB. Sure that opens up a spot at safety, but it’s much easier cover for a safety than it is a CB or DE.

Regardless of which is more important

The hammer has the potential to severly destabilize opposing backfields as a terrorizing pass rusher. His athleticism and raw power are likely going to force offenses to give him special attention if for no other reason than keeping their QB healthy.

Glad for him,

Although I am not glad at the prospect of Gilbert or whoever facing him. On the bright side he might knock one of our QB’s out of the game to be replaced by a better one.

maybe an offensive tackle will have the same notion, and mysteriously lose his feet to spring lewis for a free shot on gilly

Wrangler86...Really?

UT fans like you are always yammering on and on about how much tougher it is to get by at UT compared to OU (despite Vince Young and Cedric Benson being convincing evidence to the contrary). It really shocks you that an athlete with the best academic support facilities in the conference was able to pull his grades up in summer school classes? C’mon, man. I know you’re still butthurt about finding out that UT really isn’t far and away above everyone else after the Longhorn Network’s plans to put HS games on TV got brought to a screeching halt when OU and A&M flexed back, but would it be too much to ask you to shelf your entitlement and ego for a minute and take your lumps like a man?

Alignment of the crimson stars?

You guys have a lot going your way this offseason: Unanimous Pre-season #1; Fleming coming back; Trey M. and Ronnell “The Hammer” Lewis qualifying academically. Might be only right since the Football Gods screwed you two years ago with all those injuries. Did your team sacrifice an offering to the football gods? We sacrificed nearly our entire offensive coaching staff to them and hopefully they’re appeased.

It Ain't Easy, But It's Worth It.

Ha!

You should have said that you guys sacrificed a cow.
