Your Coaching Rumor and Riff-Raff Open Thread

TULSA, OK - MARCH 20: Head coach Bruce Weber of the Illinois Fighting Illini yells from the sidelines during the third round game against the Kansas Jayhawks in the 2011 NCAA men's basketball tournament at BOK Center on March 20, 2011 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. (Photo by Tom Pennington/Getty Images)

As we mentioned last night, it appears Bruce Weber has become the front runner for the the Oklahoma job. There are varying degrees of legitimacy to this rumor depending on who you talk to. Generally the Oklahoma reporters tend to find the rumor more credible, with the Illinois reporters being more dismissive, and one going so far as to say it won't happen

This broke late last night, so today is the day people will be calling their insiders and digging up more info. So, I wouldn't be surprised to see a little bit more depth to the rumors today. For all that, you can discuss here.

You can also jump over to Hail To The Orange for the Illini perspective.

this hire would be incredibly SAD

i’m sure you will point out how wrong I am, but my memory says that the ONLY success he has had at Illinois were his first two years and that was with Self’s players. Has OU basketball fallen this far?

If this happens this is a very good hire

He has done pretty good over the last 8 years. You should google his career.

Here I did it for you

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Weber_%28basketball%29 and yes the OU basketball program has fallen just look at the coaches that have passed on the job.

thanks

“pretty good over the last 8 years”?
05-06 = out of ncaa in 2nd round
06-07 = out of ncaa in 1st round
07-08 = not in ncaa
08-09 = out of ncaa in 1st round
09-10 = NIT out in quarterfinals
10-11 = out of ncaa in 2nd rounc

We obviously disagree on the definition of “good hire”

in the "what have you done for me lately"

Weber does come up short. He has made the NCAA’s and that is something. Missing the NCAA’s 2 out of the last 4 is concerning.

Also the idea that Illinois might not renew his contract is too.

BUT…having looked at the list of those turning down OU, he’s pretty solid.

(unless of course I convinced you to join me on the Aurieamma wagon!)

but I seriously doubt I will EVER be on the Auriemma wagon. I will offer this disclaimer – I will hope on with you and suffer all the abuse you want to throw my way after Geno wins his SIXTH STRAIGHT ncaa championship for OU

Weber is a solid coach

His teams make the tournament and as has been proven this and last year (Butler, VCU) if you make the tourney you have a chance to do some damage. He would be an anchor for the program for the next several years and could get us back on solid ground. Plus, there’s no indication that he would bring disgrace to OU like our previous two coaches have. We would be fortunate to get him.

Why I think this has legs

the Color Orange sucks…having to look at it and wear it for 8 years would make any coach want to go to a team with cool colors like Crimson and Cream!

ok…some homerism…but it’s true baby!

He's an above average coach who can't recruit very well

We just fired that guy, so why replace him with another one??? He took Self’s talent and has underwhelmed ever since. The simple fact of the matter is Joe C whiffed on his top two or three and is now scrambling.

Reading now that the theory is he wants to “go the Stoops route” by finding a top assistant to promote. Which can be simply translated to the following:

go the Stoops route = ON THE CHEAP

Which is exactly what I feared Joe C would do.

i don't think this was his original plan

and if you’re right, and this is what he is left with, that is really sad for the future of OU basketball. The odds of recruiting a “stoops” for the basketball program is remote, but not impossible. I will continue to keep the faith

Pretty hard

For me to get excited about a guy whose current (soon to be former?) fan base is happy to be getting rid of. Now it’s obviously not all Illinois fans, but it is a majority and that isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement in my book.

Having Terry Evens on staff as a head recruiter or head coach. Either way I think is a great fit.

That would be the day

That my dad burns his season tickets. I wouldn’t go watch WSU if that clown got hired. Don’t think Sexton (AD) would make that mistake. They did well when Turgeon left for A&M. Should Marshall be hired away (likely getting some looks from Joe C and others at this point), WSU will find a better guy for the job than Jeff “All My Recruits Are Thugs or Quit” Capel.

wouldn’t marshall make sense at n carolina st?

by omsooner on Mar 31, 2011 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, he would

If he wins tonight, his name will certainly heat up. As of now, his recruiting hasn’t been all that great and his teams haven’t been overly consistent, especially when the heat is on. This late run looks awesome, but they played some pretty horrid ball for the second half of the season every year he’s been at WSU.

by SCKSChief on Mar 31, 2011 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

At this point, I think you go with Evans

I was not too excited about him before, but if everyone is turning us down, I think you go with the person that really wants to be here and give him a shot.

by foodstamp on Mar 31, 2011 12:03 PM CDT reply actions

I can’t believe I am saying this, but why did we fire Capel? It looks as though Capel would be our best choice for next season because we don’t have to worry about buying him out, buying another coach out, and then paying even more money per year for a new coach’s contract. I hope I am wrong, but between the NCAA Investigations and the general lack of interest from other coaches, it looks like we can’t find a quality coach worth a damn. So why not bring Capel back next year and if he doesn’t improve dramatically (which he wouldn’t have) then you fire him and bring in a guy you want. There will be clarity by the NCAA on the investigation then, Capel’s buyout is smaller, etc. I mean really, do any of the coaches we’re looking at strike you as being better than Capel? I’ll give Joe C. the benefit of the doubt, but it looks like he fired Capel without having an idea of who he wanted and if that guy really wanted to come to OU.

This looks like a disaster.

by SoonerSunDevil on Mar 31, 2011 12:56 PM CDT reply actions

If nothing else

I’d say it had to do with the amount of terrible recruit signings and kids that have “left the program” in the last three seasons. The number is atrocious. Not a good program. I think that even Evans would be an improvement. Obviously Capel was out of his league in the Big 12.

by SCKSChief on Mar 31, 2011 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Rebuilding has to happen as some point

I think this was the right year for Joe C to make this move considering how many high profile coaches were nearing the end of their contracts. As we have seen Buzz agreed to stay at Marq, Pasnter signed an extension with Memphis, and so on. But, the field was ripe for plowing this season and next season a ton of names would be off the list simply do to the fact that they began a new contract. Take the list we are currently looking at and compare it to the list a year from now, not sure that I would have waited a year either.

There was talk yesterday...

here about Tubbs as head coach & Evans as assistant. Let Tubbs handle the coaching during the sanctions & train Evans to take his plave in 4-5 years. I like this idea.

Weber

I am a huge sooner fan who has lived in Illinois the last 7 years and Weber would be a disaster. He did pretty well with the remnants of Bill Self’s roster but has thus far shown himself incapable of constructing an above average team on his own. Illinois is a better basketball program than OU, with better access to talent, and he should be better. If this is all he can do at Illinois, I would expect less at OU. He started recruiting better 3 years ago when he hired an assistant, who Calipari tried to lure away when he took the UK job. This guy has made the difference in recruiting for Weber, and most of his ties are in Chicago. He might come along, but it is more likely he would relocate within the Big 10. Weber has not ties to Oklahoma or Texas, no history with the high schools there, and no track record of success on his own. This would be a bad and desperate hire.

History tells me from looking at the accomplishments of both programs that they are almost identical. They are the 2 winningest teams in the tournament that have never won it. The only difference at this point is the perception of the 2.

Terry Evans anyone?

Swiping HEAVILY from a great Tulsa World Article:

Meanwhile, Evans remains the only coach in the nation to publicly state his interest in, and make his case for, the OU job.

“We would win, first of all,” he told the World two weeks ago. "I’ve won everwhere I’ve been. I would bring an identity, same as I’ve had at all of my programs – an up-tempo, high-scoring team that also plays great defense and rebounds the basketball.
“I haven’t really seen an identity regarding OU basketball since coach (Kelvin) Sampson left. Oklahoma needs an identity, needs some excitement. …
“I have no recruiting budget here (at UCO), yet for the last three years we’ve been among the best college teams in the state. Give me an unlimited recruiting budget, I’ll bring in great players and do a lot of the same things that we did with Kelvin when we went to the Final Four.”

I'm starting to think that if..

…Terry Evans wants to wade into the sewer that is our current basketball program, then let him do it. It’s refreshing to see someone show some genuine enthusiasm about the job. All the other “candidates” seem to be using OU as leverage for better contracts with their current schools. While it’s not Div. 1 ball, you cannot argue with his record. I also like it when he speaks about developing an identity. He’s right, we haven’t had that for a while and I think that speaks volumes about Capel’s failure and the steady decline in attendance.

by Sooner71 on Mar 31, 2011 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

for me

we are at a level of coaches that don’t excite me at all. Retreads (Kruger) and guys about to get fired from their universities (Weber). I’d rather Evens have it. He wants it, and wants to help OU and loves OU…..that’s far more then the other guys are bringing to the table.

It’s not D1, but I’m not too sure how important that is. It’s basketball

I can't necessarily disagree with anything you all

Or anyone has said about Evans, but if this is the end result then this basketball program is even worse off than I could have imagined. I’m sure he’s a great guy, but if this is the best we can do then wow. Just wow.

what's wrong with giving the job to someone who WANTS it?

seems like all the others are using OU as leverage to get more money out of their current employer, and in Webers case just making up OU’s interest in him. Not my first choice but at least someone wants the damn job.

I agree

If Evens wins… Perfect! If he doesn’t thats ok too. As long as he Cleans this program up and keeps it that way till the sanctions are over. So that a new coach can step in and be in a good situation. I say its a great hire.

I’m fed up with all this crap. Just give it to Terry Evans, at least he wants the job.
