Cross Buzz Off The List?
As I suspected, it looks like Buzz is going to be staying at Marquette. I don't know why he would leave his situation there, he's got great support.
From Jeff Goodman at FOX Sports:
Buzz Williams is likely remaining at Marquette, sources have told FOXSports.com, and could ink a new deal with the school prior to the Final Four next weekend.
Williams, 38, who has led the Golden Eagles to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances since taking over after Tom Crean left, is on the verge of signing a new contract that will pay him in excess of $2 million per year.
Is it finalized? No. However, it certainly looks like OU is going to have to start moving down the list.

Im glad about this.
Was never a fan of Williams. He didn’t seem to excite me in any way. I don’t understand why Shaka Smart hasn’t been given more consideration. If he was at any other school besides VCU he’d be on our radar. I like the way his teams play. Very exciting basketball.
however I will say Shocka Smart seems to have a good understanding
Of the game and how to coach players to create turnovers and capitalize on the turnovers

That seems to be everyones concern.
But what you have to keep in mind is that he is not Jeff Capel. Just because he coaches at VCU does not mean he is going to fail like Capel. This guy has good energy and he will put butts in seats.

I'm with you
But Capel had the same kind of success while at VCU then made the jump…most of what we are basing our opinion on is what we have seen in the tourney, not the regular season (if you remember, VCU was questionable at best as to if they should be in the NIT or NCAA).. To add to it, will Shocka be able to recruit and work with sanctions too?
by OnlyOneOU on Mar 27, 2011 2:17 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
True
Can’t argue about VCU’s regular season. But i like the energy they play with. Even in a lost they’d be fun to watch.

I am telling you guys...
Terry Evans
I'm a Sooner Born and a Sooner Bred, and when I die I'll be a Sooner Dead!!!
That might be the choice
but it would make me very unenthusiastic

Everytime I mention him...
especially to my family and friends here, everyone points to “John Blake”. They are two different people. True we have had horrible success in football hiring an alum.
I'm a Sooner Born and a Sooner Bred, and when I die I'll be a Sooner Dead!!!
their is HUGE difference
and that is Evans has been a head coach..and Blake wasn’t even a Coordinator.
I actually like Evans as a choice.
Now, Dean Blevins is promiting an OU guy with the name Terry…but not Evans….Terry Stults

No D1 coaching experience
Sorry, I’m not sold. Name me 3 guys who have had a lot of success jumping immediately from a D2 program to a D1 program in a major conference.

name me 3 guys that have moved from d2 to d1
see…there may be guys out there…..but a fan’s knowledge level shouldn’t be the basis of coaching hires. there are 200 something D1 schools….is a fan suppose to know all of them and there back grounds?

D2 success is not a fair bar anyway...
Usually d2 teams have some d1 talent with academic issues. When you only have 10 or so players it stands out

Yeah, I'm not saying compare a D2 coach to a D1 coach
I’m just asking which coaches have made the jump from D2 to a major D1 program and had instant success?
Probably not many, if any.
Joe C needs to find someone who can turn this thing around in a hurry.

IMO, this is potentially disastrous news
Unless Joe C has some ace up his sleeve seemingly no one knows about, we’ve now been eliminated from consideration w/ #1 and #2 on most people’s list. I can’t think of another coach, that would actually consider OU, that I’m even remotely excited about.
With this cable network I can’t see Joe C whiffing on this hire, but that was my fear from the very beginning and w/ this news I’m even more fearful it is now coming to fruition.

Shaka Smart!!
Look, Brad Stevens is pretty happy at Butler, but Shaka Smart is going to get paid next year. I would be VERY surprised if he was still at VCU.
I know we have a bad “history” with coach(es) from VCU, but I fear that will deter us from the obvious best candidate.

It shouldn't matter that he's from VCU
He’s not Jeff Capel. Totally different guy.

so….if a coach wins in the NCAA tourny, means he would never come to OU regardless of the size of the university he coaches at….does that mean if a coach loses he WOULD come to OU.
Bill Self and your toupe…come on down!

I agree.
Alot of this consideration and non intrest is based on speculation. Everyone should not hold thier breath. Look at calipari or saban. Those guys proved people wrong. I’m not saying we will get one of those top notch guys but let’s just wait an see. It wouldn’t hurt to be a little optimistic. Dont get me dissapointed even before we find a coach. Lol

Cross Cuonzo Martin (Missouri St.) off the list...
… he’s the new head coach at Tennessee.
That was fast!
Yes it was. Didn't know
Even hear who was being considered yet. They already had an idea before the fired pearl.

read on a twitter post
which I can’t find now….that OU men’s BB coaching search being complicated by NCAA investigation. Actually…what it said was NCAA investigation was scaring some coaches away.
now, i’ve also read that we should here the conclusion of the NCAA investigation soon, like any day now…and that OU officials were confident OU would be cleared.
Guess we’ll find out the last part…and that might help the coaching search a lot.
