Revisiting The Class Of 2007 And Their Impact On The Field

With Oklahoma's 2011 football recruiting class signed, sealed and delivered its time to do our traditional look back at the class from four years ago. Who became a star, who transferred and who never made it on the field?

Player Position Rivals Ranking Impact
Frank Alexander DE 4 Stars Redshirted in 2007. Listed as a defensive end starter on the 2010 depth chart but didn't start his first game until Oklahoma played at Cincinnati. Has recorded 88 career tackles and 12 sacks since 2008. Has one year of eligibility left. 
David Anderson  DE 2 Stars Quit football to focus on academics. 
Austin Box LB 4 Stars Redshirted in 2007. Has been plagued by injury since coming to Oklahoma. Started first game of 2010 against Texas Tech. Has recorded 107 career tackles. Has one year of eligibility left.  
Ryan Broyles WR 4 Stars Actually came to Oklahoma as a defensive back and has developed into the most explosive wide receiver in the nation. After redshirting in 2007 he has re-written the Oklahoma record books for receivers. Broyles has 397 career receptions for 5,051 yards and 49 touchdowns.  
Jontae Bumpus DE 3 Stars No longer with the team;
Kody Cooke OL 3 Stars Transferred to Tulsa in 2009. 
Jamell Fleming DB 4 Stars Redshirted in 2007. Became a starter at cornerback in 2010. Has recorded 108 career tackles and 5 interceptions. 
Jason Hannan OL  4 Stars Considered the top prospect at the center position in 2007. Transferred to Texas State in 2009.
Desmond Jackson DB 4 Stars Played special teams in five games in 2009. Left the team in 2010. Signed with Tarleton State two weeks ago.
Travis Lewis LB 4 Stars Started as a freshman and broke Brian Bosworth's freshman tackling record at Oklahoma. Has led the team in tackles the last three seasons. Has one year of eligibility left. 
Phil Loadholt OL 4 Stars JUCO transfer who became an immediate two-year starter on the offensive line. Was taken as the 54th pick in the 2009 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings.  
Keith Nichol QB 4 Stars Transfered to Michigan State after the 2007 season. 
Jordan Nix DT 2 Stars Never played for the Sooners. Enrolled at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in 2007 and transfered to North Carolina in 2008. 
Sam Proctor  ATH 3 Stars Came to Oklahoma as an athlete and was positioned as a defensive back. Started 10 games at strong safety in 2009. Has recorded a total of 75 career tackles. 
Mike Reed LB 5 Stars A JUCO transfer, Reed was the highlight recruit of this class. Eventually had to leave the team to support his family.  
Donald Stephenson OL 3 Stars Was redshirted in 2007. Saw limited action in `08 and had no game appearances in `09. Started 9 games in `10 at left tackle. 
Jimmy Stevens K 3 Stars Redshirted in 2007. Has been accurate on 90% of his kicks over the last three seasons. Has one year of eligibility left.
Tyler Stratford WR 3 Stars Redshirted in 2007. Transferred to North Texas in 2008.
Londell Taylor WR 2 Stars Never played for the Sooners after being drafted by the Detroit Tigers. Has enrolled at Oklahoma and will be a walk on freshman in 2011. 
Alex Williams OL 3 Stars Left the team in 2009
Corey Wilson WR 3 Stars Was severely injured in an automobile accident in February of 2009.

Some pretty big studs....

couple solid starters but just not a lot of depth to the class

kind of scary

when you look at the size of that class, and the ‘highlight’ of the class never really played. then this class is so much smaller… not much margin for error. who knows what brandon williams will or won’t become? look at calhoun.

imagine if mike reed had panned out… think of the 2008 UT game, alone. everything went down the crapper as soon as reynolds went down (not that it wasn’t already a shootout). maybe another top LB would have been the difference there?

Now that guy is Trey Franks, who has turned out MUCH better than Stratford (obviously)
