20?? - Best Recruiting Class Under Stoops?

#4 Kenny Stills is a big part of why the 2010 class at Oklahoma was one of the top ranked classes in the nation.

The Stoops era has brought about an abundance of great wealth to OU and its football program. Oklahoma has had a plethora of talented kids come through the program. Every year it seems that OU and Stoops recruit the kids they want and end up getting a majority of them. But what sets Stoops and his coaching staff apart is that they have a knack of taking 3-star and 4-star recruits and turning them into top 1st round draft picks (just look to the 2006 class and Sammy). With many great years of recruiting we should hope for the trend to continue. So, with national signing day in the past, where does the 2011 recruiting class headlined by Brandon Williams as well as Trey Metoyer rank?

My vote for the #1 recruiting class under Stoops is the 2010 class. This class has had loads of hype for all the right reasons. Players like Blake Bell (has not been given a chance yet but has a limitless amount of natural ability), Roy Finch, Brennan Clay, Aaron Colvin, Tony Jefferson, and Kenny Stills are just a few of the names that populate one of the top ranked recruiting class in the nation for that year. Much of the talent that was brought to campus that year was good enough to see playing time on the field in the 2010-11 season and some even became "go to" type players. While some of these players were great there were some that were overshadowed by a senior counter part. With the seniors graduating that opens a few spots where there is no clear cut starter and offers a good chance for one of these soon to be sophomores and RS freshmen a good shot at a starting job. I'm expecting the 2010 class to make even more of an impact on the field than they did this year. The potential of this class is near unlimited and because of this class we could see the Sooners hanging another National Championship in the stadium in the near future.

My #2 (close #1 for me) class goes to the 2006 class for reasons like Sam Bradford, Jermaine Gresham, DeMarco Murray, Jeremy Beal, Quinton Carter, and Gerald McCoy just to name some of the star players. A little of why I rank them here is simply because I think the potential of the 2010 class far outweighs what this class actually produced on the field. This was a hard class to rank in second though because of the sheer fact that there were 3 players that went in the top 4 picks of the 2010 draft but as far as what I expected, this class fell just short (with several losses to Texas and a tough loss to Florida granted it only signed a solo 5-star recruit). This was sure to be an irreplaceable class but yet again OU found itself in a BCS Bowl without its star players in McCoy and Bradford and a large part of that was due to the 2010 class. The 2006 class had it's share of BCS Bowls as well as a shot at a National Title. This class also had a major role is producing a scoring juggernaut that few could compete with. I do not think we will shortly forget about the 2006 class and how much of a hand they had in the football successes at OU.

The #3 spot became a debate of RB's and of course AD won out by headlining the 2004 class. With the Rhett Bomar story not having developed until after the recruitment process, we must admit AD and Bomar were at the top of that small class as 2 of the 3 5-star recruits. In fact I was wanting to put the 2011 class here due to Brandon Williams having the potential to be the best RB Stoops has ever recruited, but as it stands right now that title still belongs to Adrian Peterson. This class suffered a ton from being so small and not having the number of scholarships to offer that the other classes have (minus the 2011 class). Outside of that, the 2004 class made the OU team a legitimate contender not only in the Big XII but also in the nation with a running back that could break a 60+ yard run at anytime and anywhere plus the fact that he absorbed so many hits. AD also became the only freshman that should have won a Heisman in recent history and vaulted OU into a coveted school for all other running backs.

The #4 class in my opinion is the 2007 class. Without players from this class I highly doubt Oklahoma would be the program it is going into next season. With the announcement of Ryan Broyles and Travis Lewis coming back this class continues to be an intricate part of who OU is as a program. But we also get Austin Box in this group. This could be one of the better classes of LB that OU has seen in a while with the combo of Box and Lewis. In my opinion these 2 players single handedly round out the defense and make it work like the machine that it is. Then throw in Frank Alexander and Jamell Fleming and we have ourselves a nightmare in the pass rush as well as pass coverage. This is a class that could very likely be the sole reason for #8 and has the experience of playing in/traveling to a National Championship game.

Finally we get to the 2011 class at #5. I know much of what I am ranking these classes on is what they have done while they were in college and I have yet to give them a shot to prove themselves at OU. But, it is hard to ignore what has already happened when giving these classes a spot on my list. The 2011 class is sure to have some star players and with time and coaching, this class could move up my list but for now I am content at leaving them #5 for landing players like Williams and Metoyer (the only 5-star recruits in the class). Later I hope we can add all the DT's this class contains to some of the greats. However, the class is also hurt because they are smaller in their numbers much like the 2004 class.
