It's not secret that Oklahoma has spent considerable time recruiting in the football rich state of California. They found a great deal of success a couple years ago scoring multiple starters in Kenny Stills and Tony Jefferson as well as backup RB Brennan Clay. Tuesday night, they received another commitment from a top CA recruit in four star WR Derrick Woods (Inglewood H.S.).
Originally it was believed that the Sooners were recruiting Woods to play safety, but recently he had revealed in interviews that the coaches had told him they wanted him at wide receiver. Woods had always made it clear that WR was his preferred position, so it would appear he is getting his wish. However, even before adding Woods' substantial talents OU is in the midst of putting together an incredibly impressive WR class. So while the coaches seem to have given in to the CA star's preference, the depth chart has a tendency to change minds on occasion. I'm not making any predictions as to whether his future is at wide receiver or safety per se, but as I said when a kid is this talented you get him on campus and let his talent work things out.
The Sooners are still in on several other CA recruits, so 2012 could eventually further that California recruiting pipeline to Norman. To go in and steal the #16 WR and #98 overall player (per Rivals) from the backyard of a school like USC is no small feat. Yet another recruiting victory for Bob Stoops and Woods' primary recruiter Jay Norvell, who could be up for Recruiter of the Year with the 2012 WR class he's putting together while still being in contention for #1 overall player WR Dorial Green-Beckham.
As we just mentioned, Woods is the #16 WR in the 2012 class and the #98 overall player. He turned down offers from Alabama, California, Florida, Miami, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, and USC to become a Sooner.
Welcome to Sooner Nation Derrick!
