OU makes history by becoming a Tier 1 research institution!
I can't even begin to say how HUGE this is for the University of Oklahoma. OU has come a long way in academics and this is proof. This helps put OU on the academic map. I'd hope OU goes for AAU membership next, but first they had to become a Tier 1 school.

For all the haters
Who ripped OU as an academic institution, put this in your pipe and smoke it!!!

So what would it take now for them to get AAU membership?
And are Boren and company serious about pursuing this?
AAU membership is private, and by invitation only. So like an exclusive country club, it’s about who you know first of all. It helps that UT, A&M, Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa St are AAU members. (and if you don’t think academics and athletics are tied, I can bet Iowa St, would be saying, if we get you into the AAU you keep us from going to the MAC)
And 2ndly is the amount and breadth of research a school does. This one I’m not sure about. I was under the impression OU and the state of Oklahoma didn’t have that kinda money to build OU into an AAU research institute, rather, OU was going more for being great a few areas of research (geology, petroleum, meteorology), so I was surprised by the Tier 1 ranking.
OU gaining AAU membership would mean huge Federal Grant money so I would assume, they would WANT it. Does the school and state have the money to put into the system to get there? That is the $64,000 question

The history with CU and NU helps to regardless of their conference affiliation...
CU may also help get OU votes in the PAC12 and in return the Big 12 may agree to help get Utah into the AAU in the near future.
