BlogPoll: Week Two Initial Ballot
Everyone played so poorly in week one that its hard to get a firm grasp on just how good (or bad) they'll be this season. Boise State made the best case of all during week one and now I regret giving into pressure and bumping them down on my preseason ballot. I think that at least for now we can say they've earned their rank this week especially when you consider that Florida, Texas and Oklahoma all have some areas of concern to be addressed. It may be a month into the season before we know exactly how solid our top five ten teams are. This coming weekend will give us a good indication though.
1. Alabama - Ripped San Jose state 48-3 and showed us nothing other than Julio Jones has mad skills when it comes to one-handed catches.
2. Ohio State - We'll learn about the Buckeyes this weekend when they host the Miami Hurricanes.
3. Boise State - Had the most impressive performance of any Top 10 team over the weekend. Get ready for the haters' excuse, "Virginia Tech was over-rated!"
4. TCU - Next to Boise state, the Frogs had the most impressive opening performance of the season. Looks like they finally have a high caliber offense to go with their defense.
5. Florida - May have had the worst offensive performance of any of the Top 10 teams. Still a lot to work on.
6. Oklahoma - Major questions arose in the defensive secondary over the weekend. The Sooners must get it shored up because it is doubtful they have an offense to win shootouts.
7. Texas - To say that the Longhorns are off and running would be an overstatement. The new Texas run-oriented offense failed to impress against Rice.
8. Iowa - A 30 point blowout of Eastern Illinois didn't show us the real Hawkeyes and its likely that this weekend's game against Iowa State won't either.
9. Nebraska - The Huskers don't have Suh anymore but they do seem to have a quarterback this season.
10. Virginia Tech - How far down should we move a team that lost to the #3 team in the nation?

Question
Someone asked me yesterday what the Sooners base defense was. I didn’t really have a good answer. I figured 4-3, but they started a nickel back against Utah State, so is it really a 4-2-5? A 3-3-5?
Then I realized I don’t really know what Venables’ scheme IS? Does anyone know? I feel like most teams you can usually figure out, but our defense seems sort of nebulous.
"But we all know that games aren't played on paper...they are played by little men inside our TV sets." --Kenny Mayne
don't base your conclusions on this game
stoops has already come out— i forget where, maybe jake trotter’s column— and said that’s not our typical set. he said it was a response to what he called the “triple option” they were running. (if you ask me, maybe we should have switched out of that set once the QB started de-pantsing our CBs.)
my understanding— very layman— is that we’re typically a 4-3, and that we use a 3-4 in obvious passing downs. very good chance i’m wrong, if anyone knows for certain.
My take
Is against a traditional offense we are primarily a 4-3. In obvious passing downs they pull of the SLB and bring in what they typically refer to as a LB/S hybrid (think Tony Jefferson or Ibby), so I suppose that would qualify technically as a 4-2-5. But as oudorn correctly pointed out, they also use 3-4 on occasion as well.

Va Tech should not have fallen to 10
This was a damned good club I saw lose — barely — tonight. They did better against better than several of the nine teams ahead of them.
In the immortal words of Socrates, "I drank what?"
I don't know if I go as far
As damn good, they’ve got some serious flaws on offense (not that we’re one to talk).

also
some pretty enormous discipline problems, especially on special teams. tech would have won the game if not for some really stupid personal fouls giving boise a new set of downs. they also drilled that guy out of bounds on the final scoring drive.
but i’m not sure you take that out on their ranking. however, there are just a ton of undefeated teams right now, so you almost have to drop them behind any AQ school that took care of business.
That was my struggle
I usually don’t like to penalize teams for losing a close game to a top 5 but then again everyone else in the top 10 won (yes, some of them ugly) so how do we justify that?
Why no Oklahoma State?
They were the best Big 12 performer on Saturday against BCS AQ competition (ahem).
They played one of the worst teams
In 1-A and that dictates a top 25 vote?
