800th Win Doesn't Come Easy For OU - Sooners Down Aggies 31-24

Recaps coming in a little while but for for now, just take that big sigh of relief! It was better than last year's opening game.

I'll start this threat off by saying...

a 47.2% completion rate with 2 interceptions (including one on a screen pass) is unacceptable for Landry against one of the worst FBS teams at home. He’s not a young pup anymore. The guy had an entire season under his belt and has played in some pretty big/tough games.

Not that it matters but...

It was a slant and not a screen. Landry played poorly tonight but one thing that I noticed is that the receivers ran poor routes and even broke a few off after the ball was thrown. That resulted in the pick on the slant and at least three other incompletions. The line was far from great but Landry also needs to know when to throw the ball away. There were several times where he just held the ball too long.

Help a brother out.

Okay. I do no live in the region anymore and did not watch the game. All I know are numbers and little colored arrows on GameTracker. So four questions for those who could watch the game:

1) Was Landry’s showing the result of dropped passes or the result of poorly thrown passes? I noticed that nobody not named Ryan Broyles had many good statistics until the 4th quarter, when Kenny Stills was the man.

2) Did our tight ends do much of anything?

3) How was the offensive line? DeMarco got his yards, but Landry took his sacks….

4) Is it time to rename our secondary the “tertiary?”

1 – all on Landry. I don’t think there were any drops, his throws were absolutely awful

2 – zilch

3 – misleading due to Demarco’s stats, but i didn’t think they played well

4 – yes, they were terrible

was it mostly landry’s fault? pressure from dline? WR dropping balls? i want to know who is to blame.

by Displaced Longhorn on Sep 4, 2010 9:44 PM CDT reply actions

I'm blaming Landry.

The guy has a whole season under his belt. Got to at least complete half your passes against a team like Utah St. in Norman.

While the focus is on Landry

I wonder what Brent Venables has to say for his defensive unit?

Total Net Yards 437
Total Plays 76
Average Gain Per Play 5.8

5.8 per play? against Utah State? Really?

Six players on USU who had receptions in excess of 20+yards – so this was not one guy dominating or one guy on our side making a mistake – it was breakdowns all over the place.

agreed

This defense has plenty to answer for after that crap fest.

linebacker tom wort was so out of position and looking lost out there and his jumping on a pile and then jumping up like he had done something great was ridiculous

by jimbo40 on Sep 6, 2010 1:05 AM CDT up reply actions

i completely agree

I was very excited to see him play and perhaps due to that excitement my expectations were a little too high. It appeared the coaches knew what they were talking about when they said he needed to make sure to keep his head about him. He seemed to be out of control and way too keyed up.

FSU is going to kill us!

Another dismal year under Venables and the totally unimaginative Wilson. Who couldn’t call each play? Someone should slap the O line coach. There is a reason no one else wants our assistant coaches! Big Game Bob will never fire one of his great friends. And short of going to D2 or high school, our assistant coaches will unfortunately be standing pat!

some things, you can arguably file under "jitters"

but for me, i’m terrified that ponder is going to eat these corners alive next week. fleming is officially exposed.

promise to re-evaluate when sober. good night.

sober?

for the first time in years, i had to drink during the game!

That was unbelievably stressful

Never thought Utah State would threaten to give me a heart attack. Might be time to take up watching competitive shuffleboard instead.

Is Bob Stoops really our man?

Bob, the people of Oklahoma and the University Alumni Association really deserve better. A narrow victory against Utah State? Come on, what are you and your staff doing these days? Last year was one of the worst years in history and the university hasn’t won a national championship since 2000. If you aren’t up to the job, let someone else step in and lead the Sooners. Sorry to be so negative but I’m tired of seeing my Sooners struggle when they should be winning by wider margins.

by aquest on Sep 4, 2010 10:38 PM CDT reply actions

Seriously?

One of the worst year’s in the history of the university? You obviously don’t remember a guy named John Blake. This is an absolutely ridiculous comment! All of it! Tag that with your FanPost and I’d say that you’re not off to a good start here.

Yeah

it wasn’t a great season by recent standards, but winning the Sun Bowl is nothing to be ashamed of.

Yes, He recruited most of them but Stoops got the missing pieces on campus

My point was that Blake provided us with three of the worst year’s in the history of the program and as bad as 8-5 was last year it was no where near the suffering of the Blake years.

by ccmachine on Sep 5, 2010 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm sorry

but that is just a hysterical and unbelievably ignorant statement. If he’s not up to the job? Do you even watch college football? He has been on of the elite coaches in college football for 10 years now?

I can’t take comments like this seriously….I suspect a longhorn fan trying to cause dissension.

Just making a point

That it could have been a Texas fan. Read the comment. Its a poser trying to stir the pot.

Not to add to the pile-on, but...

Not to pile on

But National Titles are kinda hard to win. He’s taken you to the title game. 4 times. In a decade. BCS bowls on a couple other occasions. Ridiculous home winning streak. But by all means, crucify!
