Bob Barry Sr. retiring as voice of Sooners football
Bob Barry is retiring as the voice of the Sooners after this year. It's sad to see him go, but it was probably time...while he's great and a legend and all that, he's definitely made more mistakes during games the past few years (for example, I don't know how he could never seem to get it through his had that the player's name was "BRODNEY Pool", not "Brandon Pool" or "Broderick Pool" or "Rodney Pool", all of which he used regularly for this poor guy).
How do ya'll feel about this? Do you know of anyone locally who might get the job, now that he's retiring? Who would you like to see take over for him, if anyone? And more importantly, do you feel the way I do about it, hoping they will have open auditions so you can go try out for the job as the next voice of Oklahoma Sooner football? I have to be honest, my secret dream job for many years has been to do exactly what John Brooks and Bob Barry Sr. did. (Broadcasting background? On-air experience? PSHAW....I can do that job.) :-)

Bob Barry
Bob has been good for Oklahoma Football, hate to see him go, but change is needed.
Good Luck Bob !!
Very similar
From everything I’ve read/heard, most OU fans have similar mixed feelings to the ones you described. The guy is a legend and been around forever, but he’s started to slip and it’s always sad to see a guy hold on too long. Best of luck in the future Sr. and thanks for the memories!!!

BBS was slipping WAY before
the last few years. I’m actually surprised he stayed on as long as he did. I personally never like Bob Barry Sr much.
For me, the voice of the Sooners is John Brooks. I realize that BBS did it before, and after, and for FAR more games than Brooks did the Sooners, but still it was Brooks we listened to in the days when OU wasn’t on TV every week, like they are now (the days before cable)
But Brooks is old now too…it’s time for the next generation.

Ditto
John Brooks was and is my favorite all-time play-by-play guy, for any team in any sport. I hated to hear he left OU football but I was thrilled when he moved over to the Blazers. The only guy I can think of who I enjoyed listening to as much or more would be Vin Scully, or maybe Pat Foley who was the master as the radio man for the Chicago Blackhawks.
But yes…he’s probably too old now to take over, as well, and I don’t know if they’d be able to get him back in any case. IIRC, he didn’t leave under favorable terms.
Again, I’ll be very interested to see who might come in…I hope they find someone who can really do justice to the position and make it as exciting as Brooks always did.

Just listened to his presser
His issues aside, guy is first class all the way.

Yes he is
He’s definitely a great guy and was a great radio man for us…no argument there.

A welcome change
As someone who lives far away and often has to follow the action via radio, I can tell you how frustrating BBS’ gamecalling is. Very tough to follow the action. Good guy, way past time to retire.

I think I am alone on this one
I hate to see him go. Being away from Oklahoma the past few years and not getting all the games on TV I have listened to him alot. I remember the 90’s when my grandfather and I listened to BBS every Saturday (Pregame,During, and Postgame). This tradition has continued for me into the 2000’s. I never miss a pregame or postgame. When I make it home to go to a game I still take in the headphones and listen to him during the game. It will be very difficult for me to like anyone knew that they bring in. I know he has made mistakes over the past couple of years but my love for the way he calls the game has always made me overlook those mistakes. Actually it always made me smile. I told my wife once if I ever fall into a comma the only thing that would wake me would be him saying “TOUCHDOWN OKLAHOMA”
There is nothing wrong with that, it is oddly comforting to know you can expect BBS on the radio, especially when you don’t know what to expect from the team. My personal pet peeve is working their ht & wt into the play by play with basketball games. But he will definitely be missed!!

JIMINY CHRISTMAS!
is still my favorite call from OU football games. Have to side with John Brooks myself, although I have nothing against Bob Barry, Sr. I wish him the best of luck, and I’m hoping he moves on to more relaxing pursuits that don’t require the need to correctly pronounce people’s names.
So who do you guys think
They are going to get to replace him?

I would have to vote
A strong NO on both of those options. For some reason I think Toby Rowland might get it.

I have interviewed for the job.
Keep it under your hat but I’m the new voice of the Sooners.
