Malcolm Brown vs. Brandon Williams

Thought this might be a little fun. To most that follow Texas high school football, these two were the top choices at rb. Naturally, both OU and ut have a commitment from one. In posting this, I want to compare the two now, speculate on their college career, and determine whether or not each school got the right guy (yes) and if it matters which one they got anyway (no).

Star-divide

Malcolm Brown

Height: 6'0"

Weight: 220

Malcolm is the epitome of a downhill runner. He already posesses ideal size, and he runs with a near perfect center of balance. Arm tackles are near useless, and body shots are like hitting a wall. Form tackling is the best way to bring the beast down, and it's usually a group effort. He won't make very many moves, and while his top end speed isn't elite, he's fast enough to win a foot race once he gets a lead. With texas making a commitment to the i-formation, they've found the perfect rb to hand off to.

Brando Williams

Height: 6'1"

Weight: 190

Upside is the word I see most when reading about Brandon. His top end speed is near elite, posting a 200 time slightly faster than Adrian Peterson at the same stage. At this stage, he has a bit of trouble breaking tackles, but still is plenty adequate for his size. Once he hits a college weight program, you can expect him to gain around 25 lbs. to match the preferred rb size at OU (Peterson: 6'1" 217, Murray: 6'1" 210, Calhoun: 6'0" 216). I honestly believe he can gain 20-25 lbs. of muscle and actually gain a bit of speed, he has the frame and the athletecism for it. Also noteworthy is his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. With the variety of offenses that OU likes to run, they have found a versatile back.

Entering their senior years, both backs are capable of 2k yard seasons. Williams can possibly have 2k rushing, 800 receiving yards if his offense decides to give him the ball enough. If Brown's OL plays like they have in the past, 2,000 yards is almost a sure thing. Once he reaches the linebackers, it's a battle for the defense.

It will not take long at all for Brown to make an impact for the horns. It may only take the first summer to chisel down the few ounces of bad weight on him. I expect his impact to be immediate and possibly drastic on the horns' currently frail downill attack. If he can keep his speed and agility, they may let his weight increase to 225-230, which is a good possibility. Brown has all-game Peterson like endurance, he will wear down defenses and post impressive second half numbers. All in all, texas really couln't have picked a better rb for their offense. In a nutshell, he's a big bruiser, he'll break plenty of tackles, he'll last all game, he'll win a foot race if he gets a small lead, and will break at least one big play per game.

If Williams' physical potential manifests itself to the fullest, we could end up with a star brighter than any we've seen. He has the potential to be every bit of a comparison to AD, but slightly faster and a better backfield receiver. He has the frame to easily support he added weight, he has the moves and the vision, and he has the aggression. If he can improve everything and put it all together, there's no limit to what he can accomplish. With the variety of offenses the Sooners like to run, he'll be in on every down, and danger to take it to the house on every play. In every aspect, OU, possibly has the perfect back for their offense. Even if he doesn't reach his full potential, he'll be every bit of solid rb at OU with his outstanding speed and playmaking ability. It's 4:40 AM and I am starting to lose my thoughts pretty quickly, so I'll leave the rest for you guys to talk to about. Be prepared for some rb matchups for the next 4 years.

Not to slight Brown at all

But reading over at BON, you’d think they just signed Barry Sanders in his prime or something. Considering how it was a “given” according to most over there that he would commit, I’m quite surprised by the borderline ridiculous reaction they’re having. Based on their reaction, you’d think it was the first time they’ve ever signed a big time recruit. It’s really kind of embarrassing.

I think its more timing

Based on our recent string of football bad news, and just wanting Applewhite to finally land an elite RB prospect. I agree that many are blowing this out of proportion though.

As for the original post, I prefer Brown right now, but i am afraid he may keep growing. Williams is a stud but im not sure about a “star brighter than any we’ve ever seen” type of guy. Maybe if he stayed comitted to Baylor that would be valid, but you guys produce elite college running backs every couple years so that seems a bit optimistic. Really its apples to oranges though, and i think we can all agree everyone is satisfied with the outcome. Wonder what happens with Aaron Green now? Will be interesting to see how that plays out.

I'd be surprised

If he wound up in Austin as well, but much like you I’m sure I’ve heard plenty about the speculation that he and Brown would like to play together. I think you make a valid point about the bad news between ASJ and some injuries, you’re probably right about the timing of it all.

I certainly can’t speak for all OU fans, but I’m more than fine with Brandon Williams. His film is very impressive and I think he has just as much ability as Brown if not more so considering his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. I’m quite sure each respective fan base will be just fine with the guy that they have.

You won’t get it, and that’s cool. Texas (note the spelling… Don’t be an Aggie) missed out on Peterson during the Bob Stoops Nightmare Years, and until now hasn’t really recovered in recruiting RBs.

Don’t get me wrong- Benson and Charles were great players and now make their livings on Sundays, and it’s not like the current stock is a total disaster. Point is that seemingly every year some big prospect either ditched Texas or went to OU “because they just loved watching AP when they were younger.”

All of the other pieces are there, so starting a blue chip RB pipeline is one of the last bit in the process of going from a strong program to possibly being dynastically dominant. The other of course is a smooth coaching change, but we’ll worry about that later.

You're right

I won’t get it, but mainly because I don’t care enough to try. My point was essentially that a majority of UT fans claim to “select” rather than all those beneath them who have to “recruit.” So based on that premise, you typically get whoever you want so the extreme overreaction to this one kid (who was believed to wind up in Austin all along) was laughable. I get the whole “we finally landed a stud RB” part, but as good as he may wind up being it’s not like you just got the Tecmo Bowl version of Bo Jackson or anything. Just act like you’ve been there before was all I was saying. It might be wise to let the kid play in one game before annointing him the chosen one, I mean after all won’t Muschump get jealous and want his crown back?

Addressing a few points

I understand where you’re coming from jte, I was a bit surprised myself over their reaction to his commitment. I’ve been a recruit junkie for about a year and a half now, the biggest celebration I’ve given was a very small fist pump when we landed Stills and Jefferson. I’m 24, and those guys are 10 years my senior talking about dancing and drinking the night away over Brown committing. But the again, I can’t judge, because maybe a commitment just means more to them than it would to me. shaqui chan, I’m with you on Brown, I’ve been a fan of his for almost a year now. The first time I saw his film, I thought that he was the next big thing, and I still think so.
The reason why I am so high on Brandon Williams is because at this stage, he has great speed and solid strength, and if he adds another 20 lbs. of muscle, which he has to frame to easily do so, his physical skills will only increase. If he continues to improve every aspect of his running, speed, power, agility, vision, moves, and strength, and reaches his potential in college, his production will be out of this world. The problem is that it may not be possible to reach his potential while in college.

You are not alone in that regard

and like i posted earlier, i think both were can’t miss prospects and we are lucky to have landed either one. That is probably another reason the majority of the UT fan base is getting so excited about this. IF Brown committed anywhere but UT, and you guys held onto B Williams, the class would have seemed like a failure (again in the eyes of most UT fans, not myself). I am very excited about this commitment but I try not to get to anxious before these guys make it to campus. They have enough pressure on them as it is with recruit junkies analyzing every game they play in, and millions of people watching them in all star games. We tend to forget these kids are 17-18 years old. Let’s just hope these guys stay healthy their senior years and can live up to there potential on campus.

I think what you are seeing is the culmination of an outstanding recruiting class...

which was missing a final piece to the puzzle. The euphoria over that final piece being realized verbally was the catalyst for Horns fans. This might be Mack’s best class yet. Time will tell…but expectations will be high for at least 1-2 MNC appearances with this group.

This is like choosing between the round diamond and the emarald cut.

Your woman will be thrilled with either one…I mean, they are diamonds. 4 carat diamonds at that which are clear and brilliant.

Let’s pray they both remain healthy their final seasons in HS and throughout their respective careers.

Things to keep in mind about Williams

Brandon Williams has spent most of his life in a very poor home environment. He wasn’t well taken care of, and I’ve heard he’s now living with a HS coach. Don’t be shocked if he improves enormously this year just from having proper nutrition.

From what I understand, the main reason he committed to Baylor and the only reason he wanted a UT offer was because he has TWO kids already down there in Brookshire. Being in Norman, while it gives him a chance to be a college kid and a great RB, is going to pose some problems.

I've heard about his kids

But not his living conditions. It’s tough for these kids to focus on football when they have problems in their personal lives. I believe Brandon’s best chance to realize his potential is in Norman. Being in Norman sounds like it may put him in a tough position when it comes to his children.

Wow

First time I’ve gotten to see film on Williams and he looks really great. Looks strong and has great acceleration. He’s gonna be really good for a really long time.
