Brookshire, Texas Running Back Brandon Williams Commits To Oklahoma

According to ESPN, the Oklahoma Sooners have just picked up a verbal from Brookshire, Tx running back Brandon Williams.  Williams had previously been committed to the Baylor Bears but he has apparently decided to go with Oklahoma after spending the past weekend at the Sooners Spring Game.  This is a huge pick-up and if it sticks, will most likely finish off Oklahoma's running back recruiting for the class of 2011 (although Bradley Marquez could possibly still find a spot as a slot WR).  Brandon came into the summer with less hype than the likes of Marlon Brown, Hershel Sims and Aaron Green, but his stock has steadily rose and many think is as good, or better than any other backs from Texas this year.

For a good idea of Brandon's talent, check out this blurb from Burnt Orange Nation'sGhostofBigRoy (he may be a Longhorn, but he knows what he is talking about):

Wow. Gimme, gimme. It doesn't take long for Williams to blow you away on film. Closest thing to Adrian Peterson since AD himself -- runs hard, has elite speed, but is probably an even more polished receiver than AD at the same age. Has the size to be effective in blitz pick up. No questions about size or speed.

What a fantastic way to start the week.  Welcome aboard Brandon!

Interesting

Good get, but at the same time this almost guarantees that we’re done recruiting RBs now. So no Malcolm Brown, Herschel Sims, or Aaron Green. Someone really needs to come in and impress Malcolm Brown to prevent him from going to texass.

Did you add the video?

I think Brown is going to Texas. We may as well be prepared for that one.

I did

I know you have it linked as well, but I just thought it was easier to embed it. Hope you’re cool w/ that. Brown was probably going to wind up at texass anyway, but I have a sneaking feeling that we’re still going to recruit him and they’ll hold a spot for him just in case. Supposedly the coaches have pulled the offers for Sims and Marquez.

Although I love Williams, Texas can’t take ’em all. Hoping this seals the deal with Brown, and if we manage to snare Green away from Nebraska we will effectively have a massive logjam at RB.

yeah I really trust the verbal commit

this guy just throws em around like nothing

Tony Jefferson committed to 2 other schools before OU

No reason to throw Brandon under the bus because he changed his mind.

Huge get guys

I’ve been following the recruiting trail pretty heavily for awhile now, and while Brandon Williams hasn’t blown me away to the scale that Malcolm Brown has, his potential is exciting. With a body that can and will mostly likely hold another 20 lbs, and a real possibility he could gain a bit more overall speed and burst his senior year, we may have a solid Crimson and Cream juggernaut coming into the RB position. Some very good recruiting news to break a long drought.

Alot of people at BON

are pretty sad you guys got this dude. I personally have only watched the free video posted on both of them (Williams and Brown) and I think they are very comparable and could both be superstars. The only problem is that OU has one of them committed and Texas does not. Hopefully Brown commits to Texas, but you guys just got a great recruit. Kudos to the coach who stuck with him even though he committed to Baylor

It’s nothing compared to seeing in him run the ball in real life, only two words explosive and fast equals a royal faclon beast..

Brandon Williams speaks

Kudos to Coach Stoops and Coach Gundy. Very nice to hear of our coaches doing things the right way instead of pressuring a kid into making a decision on the spot or losing their offer like another school we know south of the red river.

“I had been thinking about (committing) and had told coach (Cale) Gundy. He told me to get everything straight with Baylor and let everything calm down so it wouldn’t be like me being all wishy-washy. That way I could just be with Oklahoma and be done with it,” Williams explained.

“Even when I talked to coach Stoops, he was really excited when I told him. But he also wanted to make sure I had told Baylor and to do it the right way.”

“I was with coach Gundy most of the time and we were in his office and watching my film and some of his other (current) running backs,” he said. "He told me they would use me like Adrian Peterson, that’s my role model.

“The coaching style, I like the way they run and the way coach Gundy teaches his running backs and that’s a big part of me picking Oklahoma.”

“I expect to just come in and put in some work and try to start my freshman year and try to beat all the other running backs out,” he said.

um, Marquez and Sims say “hello?”

by Displaced Longhorn on Apr 20, 2010 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I expected

Nothing less. Do you also go by the name kettle because there’s a call for you from somone named pot who called to say you’re black. So TX never does this, except for how you guys have been rumored to have just done the exact same thing with Marquis Anderson? Convenient omission by you editing out the “pressure commit on the spot” portion of my quote by the way.

There’s a big difference between OU pulling offers (if that’s even happened mind you)early after filling their RB spot and giving these kids the option to look elsewhere as opposed to telling them we won’t offer unless you commit right now. I mean isn’t this how you guys recruit/“select” who you sign?

What I mean by that is you pick who you want, usually get them, and then ignore the rest. The difference being, and admittedly a big difference, that you won’t have offered those you didn’t “select” where according to whorn fan OU has at any give time 500 outstanding offers. IMO, this is simply OU “selecting” who they are taking and giving these other kids an opportunity to take advantage of an opportunity somwhere else. Correct me if I’m wrong, but just because you have an offer doesn’t necessarily mean it is open ended. There are a limited number of scholarships available and as you’re well aware there are only a certain number of kids who are worth waiting on should they choose to do so. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t, but I’m quite certain I’ve read on more than one occassion over on BON when it doesn’t work out TX fan would have preferred they simply offered now unused scholarship to someone they know would have signed.

All that said, I obviously don’t expect you to see things objectively so just be careful throwing those stones from your fancy glass house up on that ivory tower :)

Jesus Christ you’re… insert personal attack here

I fully expect schools to offer more kids than they can take, and when they’re done recruiting a position to tell the others that there’s no more room and to look somewhere else. The entire point of me posting about Marquez and Sims was to say “we’re not the only school to do it genius,” but instead you try to use the pot/kettle/black metaphor with me? I just have to laugh at your “objectivity.” Marquis Anderson still has an offer btw. And according to Scout, 120 kids had/claimed to have offers from OU last year, not 500.

by Displaced Longhorn on Apr 21, 2010 8:15 AM CDT up reply actions

really?

So I’m supposed to get that from “um, Marquez and Sims say hello”, really? Forgive me for being stunned by a TX fan admitting anything remotely negative about their program when it comes to recruiting. All we as OU fans ever hear from TX fan is how Mack only recruits great kids and always does things the right way and how shady Stoops is all the time. So yes, color me shocked my your admission.

Oh and while I do consider myself to be reasonably intelligent I certainly wouldn’t go so far as to call myself a genius. But thanks for the compliment.

yes, you’re supposed to understand the hypocrisy of your criticism by noting that your program just did what you vilify Texas for…

Sigh

The arrogance and sense of entitlement permeates each and every longhorn. But then again, I’m pretty sure every Sooner fan, myself included has thrown 7 national championships and 5 heisman winners in the face of an opposing fan or two. All fanbases have their faults, but texas’ has a tendency to annoy the most at times.
