Numbers For The New Guys And The Spring Football Depth Chart

Five freshmen from Oklahoma's 2010 recruiting class are on campus and will participate in spring ball next month. Now we know which jersey numbers they'll be wearing.

DB Tony Jefferson  - Jersey No. 1
WR Kenny Stills  - Jersey No. 4
OL Austin Woods - Jersey No. 50
OL Bronson Irwin - Jersey No. 68
WR Sheldon McClain - Jersey No. 88

The spring football depth chart was also released on Tuesday and while there really are no surprises I still have a few thoughts.

Star-divide

  • Gabe Ikard is listed as the team's backup center. In true Brody Eldridge fashion it appears that OU is taking another tight end and moving him to the offensive line. Ikard was the #15 tight end recruit in the nation (per Rivals) coming out of high school.
  • Eric Mensik has been moved back to tight end. So we're taking a reserve tight end that never played and putting him on the offensive line and switching the tight end that made two starts on the offensive line (and played very well) and moving him back to tight end. I guess we just have to trust the coaches on this one.
  • James Hannah isn't on the two deep at tight end. I gained some massive respect for Trent Ratterree this last season for being the best tight end on the team not named Jermaine Gresham but I still can't figure out what is holding up James Hannah. Is it work ethic? Can the dude not block? Why, tell me why? Maybe I'm just expecting too much.
  • Dejuan Miller, Jaz Reynolds and Ryan Broyles are listed as the starting wide receivers. That could turn out being a very good trio of receivers. Is anyone else excited about that?
  • Adrian Taylor is listed as one of the starting defensive tackles. I doubt we'll see him this spring because of the injury suffered in the bowl game which means we should get a good look at Stacey McGee.
  • Ronnell (The Hammer) Lewis is listed ahead of Austin Box at strong side linebacker. How could he not be after his bowl performance?
  • Demontre Hurst and Jonathan Nelson are listed as the starting corners. This is the position I am most curious to see this spring because the Sooners are losing two very good players at that position and its critical that there not be much of a drop off in production.
  • Patty O'Hara is still listed as the placekicker. Me likes this!

Spring football starts on March 8th.

I’m curious about the omission of RJ Washington. Obviously we’re loaded at DE, but to put Chiasson ahead of him either says he’s just not becoming the player we expected (yet) or the coaches are trying to send him a message. Maybe both.

Washington

I remember watching RJ several years ago and seeing him in the HS All-American Game with Habern and Good and was excited. But as you stated, nothing from him………

I was thinking the same thing

SoonerCane. He’s been a disappointment thus far, but there’s no doubt he has the talent to compete at this level. I’ve had many people tell me that Chaisson was being moved to DT, which according to this appears to be incorrect. Chaisson looked like an animal in the Under Armour game a couple years back and I’m really looking forward to seeing him on the field this year. I’d also really like to see RJ put things together and prove to the coaches that he can be a valuable member of the DE rotation.

It looks good

I’m happy to see Tom Wort 1st at MLB. What we saw of him last year was good.

I’m thrilled about the WR situation…it’s sure going to help Jones or Bell to have those guys to throw to. However, we still need a QB who’s smart enough to know when NOT to throw it…Jones had some great throws but also lots of bad ones.

I think we have to give Jones a bit of a learning curve

He was really bad at making reads some times last season but understanding that he thought at the end of August that he’d be the backup to Sam Bradford and not the starter is a lot for a first year player (redshirt freshman) to grasp. Because of that and the awful state of the offensive line I’m giving him a bit of a pass.

It's understanable to give him a bit of a pass

but I was really surprised that he didn’t completely catch on to what is happening. I expected more. Why, because I have seen plenty of times when the #1 goes down and the #2 comes in and works out really well. Anyone remember Hollieway? And they even changed the whole offensive scheme. Jones season does not come close to Hollieway’s first season of fire.

while Sam was pretty much better than expected, I think we are giving Landry a bit of a hard time. Think about the Colorado & the ISU game as freshman for Sam. Jones has not played to the level of Sam clearly as a freshman, but also outplayed Bomar. Who else has started as a freshman (redshirt or not) I think you have to have a little perspective with that. Plus it obviously took all year to find out that Raterree could make some TE plays. The WR were horrific outside of Broyles. Obviously Sam makes more completions even to those guys, but none of them (except Broyles) went out & made plays to get the balls. These sat & waited for the ball, just really poor technical skills. Finally, DeJuan Miller got some playing time. But I have maintained since ’05 that if the upperclassmen are sucking/not playing to expectations, screw it the season was lost & put some younger guys, get some reps.

Marshall Musil-FB

I hope he pronounces his last name like “muscle”. Here’s another Kansas kid, a prototype of a Stoops player able to excel at other sports (like basketball). This kid evidently can run a bit and catch the ball. I realize Clapp was an All-Conference performer, but I’m looking forward to see the return of the FB loop play (more or less 15 yd lob to the FB running down the sideline), which seems to have been replaced by the, I’m not sure what you call it, kind of flat loop pass to Murray where he catches it in stride. JD Runnels seemed to have that pass catch coming out of backfield down pat, including for TDs.

Gabe Lynn

I think they’re going to have a hard time keeping him off the field this year as well. Whether it’s at CB or S, I think he’ll force his way onto the field.

As far as TE, I like Mensik and Ratterree as much as the next guy but I would really like to see more of a vertical threat to stretch the defense down the middle. I think they’re both great blockers, but are somewhat limited when it comes to getting open in the passing game. I realize there isn’t going to be another Gresham walking through that door, but whether it’s Ikard, Haywood, or Millard I’d like to have more of a threat at TE than we did last year.

Oh, and Mossis needs to be off kickoff return.

by jtesooner on Feb 11, 2010 2:36 PM CST reply actions

huh?

If you’re referring to my Madu comment I was simply saying I didn’t want him returning kickoffs. If that’s not what you meant then I’m not sure what you were referring to.

by jtesooner on Feb 12, 2010 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

yeah i read that as “mossis needs to be kicked off” for some reason… no idea why i skimmed so fast.

by Displaced Longhorn on Feb 12, 2010 6:26 PM CST up reply actions

No worries

I probably could have worded it better. He just did nothing on his returns last year, not to mention the fumble against you guys. I really liked him at RB his soph year and was disappointed he never really got on the field last year. I felt like the coaches held him back last year more than he did himself, but I could be way off on that one. I just thought as much as our offense struggled last year, he was someone who with the ball in his hands could make things happen (see Mizzou game). He just doesn’t seem to be explosive enough to return kickoffs.

by jtesooner on Feb 13, 2010 9:31 AM CST up reply actions

I can't wait to see the

Hammer, Wort and Travis Lewis all play together. This a very talented and physical LB corp. Should all the opponent QB’s and RB’s shivers to know that the Hammer is just itchin’ to plant them. I bet several of the opponents remember the hits he gives them.

by scarab on Feb 13, 2010 8:51 AM CST reply actions

I think on potential

They could be as good or better then Lehman, Calmus, and Co. That’s a bold statement, but just based on athletic ability I think it’s definitely possible.
