Well after 10 games OU's run defense is allowing 147 yards per game and 4.1 yards per carry. Ummm, not good
we all say, this compelled me to look at the records and compare the numbers with Sooners Defense of the past 11 years since Coach Stoops arrived. Here is what I found.....
ypg= yards allowed per game ypc= yards allowed per rushing attempt
1999 128.1ypg 3.4ypc 7 wins
2000 101.9ypg 3.4ypc 13 wins NT
2001 85.1ypg 2.3ypc 11 wins
2002 107.9ypg 3.0ypc 12 wins
2003 109.7ypg 3.4ypc 12 wins
2004 86.4ypg 2.8ypc 12 wins
2005 91.2ypg 2.8ypc 8 wins
2006 98.2ypg 3.3ypc 11 wins
2007 91.9ypg 2.8ypc 11 wins
2008 106.1ypg 3.2ypc 12 wins
2009 88.6ypg 2.7ypc 8 wins
Avg for the first 11 years under Stoops is 99.5 yards per game and 3 yards per carry.
This year is 146.9 yards per game and 4.1 yards per carry, that 's a whopping 48 yards and 1.1 yards per carry more than we are accustomed to under Stoops and Venables. This, in my opinion, has been the biggest issue of the season and should be the NUMBER ONE PRIORITY in the spring and fall practices to correct the problem and make adjustments. Hopefully this is just blip in the radar and will not become a trend for the future.
Of Couse Stats never tell the whole story. Too many big gashing run plays this year!
