Oklahoma's Football Recruiting Board
National Signing Day, for college football prospects, is just over a week away (Feb 3rd) and the Sooners are currently sitting on one of the top classes in the country with 29 verbal commitments. Of those commitments 5 of them (OL - Bronson Irwin, S - Tony Jefferson, WR - Sheldon McClain, WR - Kenny Stills and OL - Austin Woods) are already enrolled and on campus for the spring semester.
Out of Oklahoma's 29 commitments 15 of them are four star recruits and 14 are 3 star per Rivals who currently have the Sooners ranked with the nation's fifth best recruiting class. However, there are still some "big fish" out there that could bump OU up a few notches should they decide to pledge their allegiance to the University of Oklahoma. Here are three guys that have made official visits to Norman over the last month that could push this year's recruiting class to the top.

DE Jackson Jeffcoat (Plano, TX) - Rated as a five star recruit by Rivals, Jeffcoat is most likely the most coveted recruit remaining for Oklahoma. He was on campus this past weekend and will make the announcement about his college of choice Sunday night on a Dallas television station.
OT John Cullen (Fullerton, CA) - A junior college transfer and rated as a four star recruit by Rivals, Cullen was on campus a few weeks ago. He's possibly one of two players that Oklahoma could sway away from another school at the last minute. Cullen had been committed to Tennessee but has reopened the recruiting process with the departure of Lane Kiffin.
OLB Corey Nelson (Dallas, TX) - Nelson is rated as a four star recruit by Rivals and is currently committed to Texas A&M but visited the OU campus this past weekend along with Jackson Jeffcoat. The fact that he's willing to visit shows that he's at least interested to listening to how he could be a part of Oklahoma's defensive schemes.

Don't get your hopes
Up on Cullen coming to Norman. Of the three, my guess is he would be #3 by a considerable margin in terms of chances he comes to OU.
Not really sure on Nelson either way, probably 50/50 are a little greater in ATM’s favor. CC makes an excellent point that an official visit this late in the process certainly doesn’t hurt our chances.
Jeffcoat has been as close to the vest as any high profile recruit I can remember in the past several years. So any speculation as to where he’ll end up at this point is just a complete guess, no matter what BON or any other whorn site wants to try and make you believe. They have to be at least a little disappointed that Mack couldn’t close the deal this past Wednesday and if they tell you they’re not they’re lying. They may eventually wind up getting his committment and if they do then they’ll get all the props they deserve (and plenty the don’t by whorn nation). However, this arrogance that he simply has to be a texass lean and it’s simply inevitable that he signs there is just one of the many reasons why the whorns are so hated.
Now Jeffcoat, Nelson, and or Cullen would definitely be the icing on the cake of what CC very accurately describes as an excellent class. In no way implying that I wouldn’t be ecstatic to have any/all of them, but if we wind up w/ none I certainly won’t be disappointed with what Stoops and his staff have done to this point.
Can you explain the math?
Are 25 accepted offers the max per year? I understand that with five early enrollees in the 2009-10 academic year that these count towards 2009 (assuming the 2009 cannot ever exceed 25 either).
I just don’t know how this works.
Assuming the five that are enrolled do not count towards the 2010 limit, then that leaves OU at 24 with one more scholarship to offer. Given the recent Grissom offer, a DE out of Kansas, it seems worth speculating that Jeffcoat will not come to OU. That leaves one spot for either Nelson or Cullen. It’s no great secret that OU needs offensive lineman, and that landing Cullen is probably their biggest need. To me OU looks stacked at DE and LB positions.
If not OU, hopefully Houston lands Jeffcoat. That would be quite the haul for Sumlin given the hype about this young man.
You pretty much have the concept
The way I understand it, OU has 1 scholarship to give to one of these three guys, provided they’d like to come.

And they could always
Have one of the lower on the totem poll guys if you will, come on as a preferred walk on.
Also there is always that chance that a few could not qualify.

And a verbal commitment on a recruit's part
is NOT binding until they sign. It also goes the other way around too. When you look at the schools below the national powers, they are usually with commits around 20…..as they hope some scraps fall from the big boys on to their plate.

OU 2010
Scouts has OU ranked 2 in recruiting at this hour. Next year we should return to the top of the Big 12. Herbie of ESPN has it right : OU ranked preseason 3rd! There is no way to justify ranking Texas and Nebraska over OU.
It usually takes 2-3 years for a recruiting class
to show up on the field. So a great recruiting class this year, doesn’t correlate to a great football year on the field in 2010. 2012….that is more like it.

This is true
The South this year will be up in the air because almost every team has question marks going into the season. There really is no clear cut favorite.

In the interest of quicker games Ron should just tell the ump he's pulling the Feliz card and the ump should rule the inning over.--Sherman McCoy on Sept. 4, 2009
when you have 30 commitments… it’s hard not to be highly ranked. See UNC last year…
Rivals and ESPNU have us both 2nd, not that it matters

Wow!
And you’re reasoning? Our sooners had a bit o’ trouble this past year with QB & every other offensive position AND a ton of talent on the defensive side of the ball leaving for the NFL. NU is going nowhere but up and Texas has an obviously talented QB taking over along with a defensive coordinator working more miracles than our sooner coaches. Let’s be realistic and atleast say that we’ve got our work cut out for catching up with those two teams in 2010.
Nebraska is losing a once in a generational defensive playmaker.
And there going nowhere but up. There is no possible way their defense will be better next year considering Suh’s defensive stat line. He, single handily, was better than the Alabama defensive line stat wise.
rankings this time of the year mean nothing and ...
they are basically ‘make work’ type of things to keep herbie and the rest of the media and industry busy. therefore they pump out crap to stay busy and justify their jobs. For people like us it feeds our desire to read about football and argue with rival groups about the teams.
what time of the year are rankings valid? only on NSD/just after NSD? or are you only talking about actual college football rankings?

Thanks Captain Obvious
Only time will tell (as with all recruits) whether you guys got a good one, but there’s no denying we’d be excited as well if things had gone our way. You guys certainly seemed to have a good day yesterday.
ya that’s what most thought, dunno what happened
