BYU loses another lineman
Yes, the Cougars have lost yet another lineman, with the victim this time being Jason Speredon.
The junior tore his rotator cuff during practice today and, as the injury will take 3-5 months to recover from, he will be lost for the season.

This is about the last position BYU needed to lose when going into a game against McCoy and Granger.

3-5 months is being optimistic. I have worked with a lot of rotator cuff repairs. They are tough to regain mobility & strength (where it was at time of injury)
I think that’s why they’re probably not even bothering to try to get him back for the late part of the season. Even if he were to fully recover from the damage itself, getting himself back to impact-shape would be another long road in its own right.

Just so you know
BYU is projecting their best O-lineman – LT Matt Reynolds – to be back for the OU game on September 5th. If this occurs BYU will be in much better shape to take on McCoy, Granger and Co. If not look out.
Also, while the Speredon loss hurts it’s not nearly as huge as losing Matt Reynolds would be. The BYU O-Line is all underclassmen but several had some starting experience prior to their LDS missions. Mendenhall has them each playing multiple positions and they should be okay. I’m not saying they’ll be even near as good as BYU’s incredible O-line from 2008, but they should be okay. Hopefully, from my perspective of course, that is sufficient to buy Hall some time in the pocket.
Another key addition this week was the return of FB Manase Tonga. He should also be as vital to pass-blocking as he is to BYU’s running game.
