7-5 Isn’t Chasing Off Recruits At Oklahoma
If there's one thing that's good about Oklahoma's struggles on the football field this season it's that the team's short comings in various positions were exposed and the need for talent and depth at quarterback, receiver and offensive line couldn't have been clearer. The Sooners were decimated by injury on the line not to mention injuries to the quarterback and tight ends. Then there are the receivers who didn't necessarily suffer from injuries. Instead they had the drops and the inability to separate from defenders which ultimately could be worse because eventually injuries heal.
Apparently recruits love the opportunities birthed by Oklahoma's struggles because despite five losses this season Oklahoma has officially moved to "waiting list" mode with the 2010 recruiting class. Apparently the reports of Oklahoma's football demise have been greatly exaggerated.

As of right now the Sooners have 27 commitments for 2010 and are still in on the Cameron Newton sweepstakes. Currently Rivals has Oklahoma's recruiting class ranked #4. ESPN has them at #5 and Scout puts them at #2. The class consists of 12 offensive players, 10 defensive and 5 guys who are being recruited as athletes. Of the 27 commits 14 of them are 4-star recruits and 13 are 3-star. At least five of Oklahoma's 2010 commits are expected to be enrolled for spring classes and thus spring ball.

just curious, what’re your scholarship numbers breaking down to?

Not sure what the rules are but....
We did just have 2 players leave the program (Vinson and Owens) plus we will be getting 2 more scholarships back as I believe we come off of probation next year from the Rhett Bomar fiasco. I’m not sure on the dates but I think 2010 was the year.

They have 27 that they can offer this year
Not sure how the Vinson and Owens transfers will affect that.

plus
There is some sort of rule about the early enrollees not counting towards this year’s scholarship total or retroactive to last year’s number. Not entirely sure how it works but I’ve read about it in numerous places which is what’s allowing us to hold spots for Newton, White, Jeffcoat, Cullen, and others (assuming we don’t land all of the above which I very much don’t expect to happen).

Are We Done?
Rivals.com has us listed as having 27 scholarships committed.

Does that mean we’re done with our offseason shopping? There is a certain 6’8" Offensive Lineman at the top of the list who’d look pretty good under the Sooner’s Christmas Tree.

Technically They Are Done
But they can still make room should a certain few guys want to come.

Just for my own curiosity and understanding, how does that happen?
by BrooklynBoomer on Dec 23, 2009 5:48 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
There are a few ways to make it happen
1) There will be players transferring which will in turn free up scholarships
2) There’s always the chance that someone won’t qualify
3) Early enrollment as mentioned above.

I think...
They take some of the lower on the totem poll recruits and just make them “preferred walkons”
Or they just take the scholarships from a guy they didn’t want as much.

Yeah it is but I have seen it done before in basketball (not at OU but I think Kentucky) so it wouldn’t shock me one bit if they did it in football too.

a kid is suing hawaii for revoking his scholarship (he’d been committed for 10 months and refused other schools recruitment), although that was because the new coaching staff decreed all previous scholarship offers were void.

Happens ALL the time
to most major schools. Heck even the non-major ones, just with lesser prospects.
One way to get a few in is early enrollment, then they go to the previous year’s scholarship limits usually replacing guys that transfer.
Another way is “Grey Shirts” or the preferred walk-ons. They don’t get a scholarship for the first semester, but get one after to replace guys that transfer.
Another way is give more offers, and wait for eligibility. I recall Baylor giving out like 30 a few years ago, had great press with their “class”. but like 8 of em where passed over by other schools cause they were doubtful to be eligible, and Baylor only got one or two through.
Or they get the “Sorry” phone call…and then go to a lesser school. I know Col St. usually keeps one or two scholarships open just to catch these kids.

Cam Newton
According to an Auburn blogger, they’ve signed Cam Newton. I’m searching everywhere and can’t confirm it yet… But regardless, maybe we’ll get the answer this afternoon either way.

Cam straight up told the OU Rivals guy that that information is completely false

He visited Auburn last weekend
But has yet to commit to anyone yet. At least Rivals still has him listed as uncommitted.
