Brave New Big 12 North

Just for the sake of argument let's assume that Missouri leaves and the Big 12 picks up TCU. If you'd rather assume Arkansas go ahead. At least to me, this would have two significant implications regarding our friends in Stillwater;

1) Poke State would be in the north, competing with a shadow of the Nebraska program (for at least a few years). I'm not saying OSU would completely dominate the north but compared to their current situation (getting humiliated by OU and Texas year in and year out), if I was an Oklahoma State fan I would go to bed each and every night praying that Missouri makes the jump to the Big 10.

2) Of course that would mean the death of the yearly Bedlam series. While I'm sure there would be a flood of tears coming from Stillwater, would this upset anyone? I mean I guess they're a rival but honestly I'd much rather go out of my way to play Nebraska every year than OSU...

But why add TCU for arguments sake?

I think they were a member of the old SWC, but I’m not sure TCU adds any market value the Big XII doesn’t already have (Dallas/Ft. Worth).

Knoxville sports commentators wish Arkansas good riddance; I think the main reason simply is Arkansas is “too far away” and out of alignment with the traditional SEC.

I’d like to see the Big XII expand west and get Utah. Utah would replace Missouri in the North, Utah has been competitive in football and basketball at least, and they would add a market (SLC) with the loss of St. Louis.

I suppose one could argue in favor of BYU, but I like the addition of the state school, which probably isn’t meritorious.

I think for these reasons Colorado State just doesn’t add up compared to a Utah (or possibly BYU). Keep OSU in the South.

CSU doesn’t come close to being a Big 12 school. (and I got my 2nd degree from there). They are barely a MWC school, when compared to the “haves” of the MWC.

The Pac-10 is looking to add 2 schools as well. They have also been linked to BYU and Utah. BUT BYU and Utah think they have a better chance at a National Championship game, by staying in the MWC if Boise St joins. (also the Pac-10 seems to have some terrible TV contracts, so bad, that the MWC with theMTN TV and Versus contracts look good) That leaves the Pac-10 looking for 2 more schools, and Colorado Boulder and the Denver TV market seems to be on their wish list.

If that Big 12 loses CU to the Pac-10, and Missouri/or Iowa St. to the Big 10, I think BOTH OU and OSU join the Big 12 North. Add Arkansas and Houston in the south.

Which makes the poll question here wrong. Would you rather have OU-Texas played every year?

I think this would make the conference stronger

I would rather have TCU instead of Houston though.

It's just an assumption

But TCU seems the more natural fit anyways.

The Bedlam Series can continue yearly without a problem if they go to the North Division.

Lot’s of conference’s do the same thing with rivalry games.

But not

with the hard scheduling that the Big 12 does in Division and out.

the big question, would be would the game be COUNTED in the conference standings? when the Big 12 was formed Nebraska wanted to continue with OU and proposed in the off years it would be a Non-conference game. (but at the time Nebraska was good..and OU terrible, so…OU passed)

by Redhawk on Dec 21, 2009 1:34 PM CST up reply actions

I wasn't asking if it could continue

But rather if it should continue. If we don’t play Nebraska every year I’d just as assume let the bedlam series die.

if OU and OSU were split

I could see the series dropping off for OU, but not sure the Okla legislature would allow that for the OSU side, would really hurt. They need that game every other year.

What if OU went to the North (with or with out OSU). What about the OU-Texas series. Would that go on every year?

the RRS trumps any reason for OU to go north…

but

if the game is played every year…as a non-conference game for 2 years then conference for 2…what’s the difference?

by Redhawk on Dec 22, 2009 7:56 PM CST up reply actions

the difference is a longer more grueling “conference schedule” those 2 non-conf years and less chance to schedule who you actually want to schedule. (whether you see that as wanting to schedule creampuffs vs the uclas/arkansas/utahs of the world is irrelevant)

I enjoy Pac-10 football and it does have terrible exposure...

… in the southeast and northeast (lived in both). As much as I hate to admit it, some of the best marquee games as of late have been on CBS and are SEC matches, or at least that’s a general perception, I think.

The Big 10 games at noon on ESPN suck.

Thank goodness for FoxSports south or central or whatever it is, but the commentators, drama, and camera work, are not like that of CBS.

by inocybe on Dec 21, 2009 3:11 PM CST reply actions

and don't forget the homerism

that is blasted non stop by CBS. Then again CBS should spout that type of crap since they are paying appoximately 280M yearly to the SEC.

by scarab on Dec 22, 2009 6:31 AM CST up reply actions

CBS is trying the best they can

With all the speed and athleticism in the SEC it’s often difficult to catch plays on camera and describe to audiences
