Notre Dame and Stoops
Whats the latest on Bob Stoops and Notre Dame
Norman - There is a coaching vacancy in South Bend, Indiana.
<!--RA-->
Notre Dame has fired head coach Charlie Weis after five seasons and a 35-27 record.
<!--RA-->
Now, comes word that an analyst for Notre Dame's Scout.com page says the Notre Dame Athletic Department and Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops have verbally agreed to the principles of a contract.

Today, Stoops put a damper on the rumors. Kind of. Here is the transcript from today's teleconference.
<!--RA-->
(Stoops): "The questions come up and like I always say I fully intend to be at Oklahoma, hopefully for a good while. You never know what the good lord brings you, but in the end I couldn't be more excited about, even through a tough year, the good quality kids we're working with and the great people here that I work with daily in our administration and you know I can't help with all that's said, but in the end, the players I'm recruiting understand that that's what I'm excited about and that's what I intend to do."
<!--RA-->
(Reporter): "There is officially an opening at Notre Dame. So, you're not going there?"
<!--RA-->
(Stoops): "What I am saying is I intend to be at Oklahoma, that's the only place that right now, yes that I am, what I'm looking to do. I will never confirm or deny whether I talk or not talk to anybody. And, I won't be interviewing for any jobs."
<!--RA-->
(Reporter): "I'm not asking if you talked to anybody."
<!--RA-->
(Stoops): "Well I just said all that."
<!--RA-->
(Reporter): "What I'm asking is can you tell me right now that you won't go to Notre Dame?"
<!--RA1-->
(Stoops): "What I'm saying is that I'm going to be at Oklahoma next year. So I can't be in two places at once."
<!--RA1-->
(Reporter): "Well then why not just say no?"
<!--RA1-->
(Stoops): "Because I don't like the way you worded it. So, in the end, I told you what I intend to do. If Joe (Castiglione) and President Boren will have me, that's what I'm going to do. And that's where it's at."
<!--RA1-->
(Reporter): "How would you have worded it?"
(Stoops): "Not like you, obviously."
While that's a far cry from coming right out and saying "I will not be the next head coach at Notre Dame", it does give OU fans something to hold onto.
Oklahoma State fans can tell you about what a coach says and what happens. "It's hard for me to withdraw because I never put my name in the hat in the first place," is one thing Les Miles said before bolting to LSU.
Other quotes? "When I say I'm really happy here, I really am. I don't want to be looked at as (being) in a part-time spot. You got me? I just want you to know -- this is a place I want to be. I don't want to talk about anything else, just to let you know."
Until someone else is hired to coach at South Bend or Stoops comes out and says he is absolutely, unequivocally, 100-percent going to be the head coach at the University of Oklahoma when the Sooners take the field next September, the rumors are going to keep going.
Weis' Fighting Irish began the season 6-and-2, but lost four straight, including losses to Navy and Connecticut. The regular season ended Saturday with a 45-38 loss to Stanford after the Irish led 31-27 heading to the fourth quarter.
Stoops is 116-and-29 in eleven seasons at Oklahoma. But, his 2009 club has suffered through its worst season under his tutelage, going 7-and-5.
The Sooners did however cap off the regular season in style with a 27-0 win over in-state rival Oklahoma State Saturday in Norman. It's likely the Sooners are headed to the Sun Bowl, but the question is will Bob Stoops be with them?

Very interesting
Say the worst happens and Stoops does leave, which is highly unlikely but not impossible, where does OU go from there?

They will go get a very good coach
maybe a coordinator that I never heard of from and SEC school (like Bob Stoops was).
The bottom line is money, and facilities. Two things OU has. Stoops is one of the top 5 highest paid coaches in the country. I’m sure out there….some where…is a good quality coach that would like to make 4 million a year coaching OU.
Internally there really isn’t any good options. Wilson was considered head coaching material just recently, but this year his offense has looked terrible, and poorly coached. Venables the Defensive Coordinator, has never really been that great since Mike Stoops has left. He also seems a little too fiery personality wise. Seems like a defensive Coordinator to me.

If Stoops does leave
Gary Patterson from TCU would be a good fint IMO.

My wish list
would include Brian Kelly of Cincinnati…who IS going to be the nest Notre Dame head coach.
Patterson, believe it or not is getting paid $3.5 million. TCU got tired of losing coaches, so they ponied up for Patterson, who I like as well.
I also kinda like Dave Christensen who is the head coach at Wyoming. He got them to a bowl game in his first year after leaving Missouri where he was their offensive coordinator.
I’ve also heard the offensive coordinator for Auburn’s name as a possible OU head coaching candidate.

Uh wrong… 1 yr asst at Arkansas, 2 yr at Tulsa & 1 yr at Auburn does not get you the Oklahoma job….it wouldnt even get him the OC at OU.

That right there is why Stoops would never leave for ND. The media would drive him insane and he would just get pissed off at them.

"I won't be interviewing for any jobs"
Sounds unequivocal to me.

there is a catch in that
a lot of the “interviewing” on his level is done through his agent and the agent’s “people”, so Stoops in this case can say, “I never talked to Notre Dame” which is what ESPN is reporting happened Sunday. Numbers were discussed, and ESPN reports the 2 sides couldn’t agree on numbers.

ESPN is generally full of bull, did you see the Brian Kelly slant they have today??? Maybe the current Utah coach to ND, Sumlin to Louisville, ?? some Pac 10 OC to Virginia… if we are lucky K Wilson to Akron…

ESPN
is OK until they have to report on anything on the west coast….You, know…anything west of Philadelphia.
I do think Brian Kelly is and should be the leading candidate for the Notre Dame job. Cincinnati isn’t the same as Notre Dame’s program, which for being on national TV every week, isn’t all that great. (which is why Urban Myer, and Bob Stoops are not going to ND)

I don't think he will go to ND
He’s already making a ton of money and there isn’t any other reason that would be incentive enough to go
