Around SBN: Has Kentucky Improved Since the Non-Conference Season?

I'm curious

I realize this is an OU fan site, but I'm curious about something I continue to read on the UT sites I just can't stay away from.  I get that they hate everything OU and will take advantage of any and every reason (legit or otherwise) to bash OU.  I expect nothing less and I would/do the exact same to them.  Anyway, I'm curious if any OU fans here or Texas fans hanging around can help me understand something.  The general consensus that I'm reading is that Texas's program is in much better shape heading into next year and that OU is in serious trouble again next year.  Evidently this is common knowledge to everyone (especially recruits according to Texas fan) and Stoops is helpless to do anything about it.

I'm left to assume that Texas fan thinks there will be little if any dropoff after having to replace at a minimum:

Colt McCoy, Jordan Shipley, Sergio Kindle, Chris Hall, Charlie Tanner, Adam Ulatoski, Hunter Lawrence, Lamarr Houston, Roddrick Muckelroy.

They have no running game to currently speak of, with no help on the horizon, and losing over half their O-line.  There's no Colt/Jordan to fall back on next year to make up for this fact, so much like teams have done to Landry this year, they'll likely force Gilbert to have to win games next year.  Assuming Earl Thomas doesn't jump early, they'll again have a dominant secondary and probably a strong LB core and defense in general.  So I see a team with a good to very good defense and an offense that will almost certainly struggle.  Sound familiar?  Please help me understand how Texas isn't expected to struggle next year fellas?

Well...

Offense:

—O-Line: I for one think that losing 3 OL starters (Tanner Hall Ulatoski) is a good thing. I haven’t been impressed with a single on of them and you can attribute our poor running game to the left side of the line. Thats why we almost never run on that side. Hix and Huey remain and David Snow return at Center, and he has played just about as many snaps as Hall the past 2 years. The problem is finding replacements which would include Trey Allen and possibly Britt Mitchell at LG and LT respectively. Britt has played well in mop up duty this year and Allen was a 5 star recruit who hasn’t had a chance to get alot of snaps but we expect great things from him next year. Our O-Line needs re-tooling next year, but only on the left side which many fans and I, believe that it will be a blessing in disguise.

—WR: We will lose Shipley which will hurt, but at the same time we get Brandon Collins back from academic suspension (assuming he gets his priorities straight) which will be a huge boom to our team. Malcolm Williams has shown flashes of pure brilliance, but like Adron Tennel, he sometimes has issues with his hands. The reward certainly outweighs the risk and he will be the number 1 deep theat after Shipley leaves. Buckner is going to try and add about 20 lbs in the offseason and be a TE, or stay at the flex position as Blaine Irby returns to health. Kirkendoll and Chiles will have to fight for their jobs which isn’t a bad thing in my opinion. The last WR position will be open for about 10 guys fighting for spots.

—On to RBs: As I noted above, our running problems are with our O-Line on the left side. We have the talent and the youth that goes along with it. I think Vondrel McGee is a lost cause and will not get many carries, but expect Tre Newton, Cody Johnson, and Fozzy to split duties next year. Cody Johnson will remain the 3rd down back, but expect Chris Whaley to get some reps there as well.

—Garrett Gilbert will replace Colt and he got some decent reps in mop up duty this year, actually running the same offense rather than just handing the ball off like John Chiles did in 2008. GG has the tools, great feet, and has an amazingly high football IQ. He’s mobile and makes good decisions. I expect a huge dropoff in the QB position, but not nearly as bad as it seems. GG will not win games by himself like Colt, but with the offensive firepower and the re-scheming of a real offensive gameplan, he wont have to.

On the defensive side of the ball we have Will Muschamp playing all 11 positions.

In all seriousness, we have to replace a DT in Houston and a DE in Kindle. Kheeston Randall will return at DT and Sam Acho, Eddie Jones, Alex Okafor, Reggie Wilson will return at DE. We’re taking the 3 top DTs in HS this year, and we expect to have Calvin Howell and Derek Johnson up to speed to play at the other DT spot. The thing is…we have the bodies to rotate in and out on the D-Line, which is sometimes better than playing a true stud all game.

On to LBer, Jared Norton will return from a medical redshirt. There have also been rumors of Muckelroy getting a medical redshirt from his 2006 season and being able to return next year. Keenan Robinson and Emmanuel Acho will return along with the decent LB class we picked up for 2009 and maybe some true freshmen from 2010 class. Maybe we get Hicks.

Our DBs lose Deon Beasley. Maybe Earl Thomas if he leaves to the draft, which I would not blame him for at all. The best thing about our DBs is that they are versatile. Both Curtis and Chykie Brown can play safety as can Aaron Williams. Nolan Brewster has played exceptionally well in limited action, along with Kenny Vaccaro and Ben Wells. Christian Scott should also return from academic suspension and the boy has great talent, but he is raw. A year of practice under his belt will go a far way to help his progress.

We all think GG is going to have a freshman year like Colt’s his freshman year, but not as good as Bradford’s. He is incredibly talented and he will have one hell of an offensive squad to play with. I think we’re going to be looking at 10-2 or 11-1, barring any freak injuries that have plagued y’all all season.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

Dear Texas Fans

Be careful what you wish for with new offensive linemen…

by SoonerDutch on Nov 23, 2009 7:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

definitely, here’s to hoping they’ll be good enough. but you lost alot more than just your oline, you lost most every meaningful receiver, and those you brought in sucked for the most part. and your heisman QB went down and a backup played the season. now who knows what Gilbert will look like, but he was much more highly rated than Landry Jones, and I can only imagine he’ll do good things while taking his licks. he’ll at least have some decent receivers to throw to, some experienced backs to hand off to. just gotta hope the oline can be patched up decent enough to give him a few seconds to check down.

while OU’s woes are great, they’re not solely on the o-line, your whole team got fuckin obliterated by injury. if Texas stays healthy, they’ll be just fine.

by Displaced Longhorn on Nov 23, 2009 8:16 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

according to almost every UT fan

Texas is great, Texas always wins, Texas is the greatest thing since slice bread, Texas has never lost to OU, Bob Stoops is the worst coach in all of CFB ever, Texas has never been bad, Texas has never had a bad coach, OU will never beat Texas, Texas has owned OU forever and ever, the only way OU ever beat Texas was by accident,Texas has lots of championships and the list goes and on and on and on and on and on.

JTE, do I need to say anything more. That is what you will get on a UT site, or any site that is frequented by most UT fans.

In 50 years I have met probably 15 or 20 truly objective UT fans. It must be the water?

Give them credit, they keep the same story line going and going.

Give me a break

Go to any school affiliated blogsite and you will find “homers” that tout how great they are. Are OU fans the only classy and objective fans in CFB? All of them have the objective guy and all of them have the rose-colored glasses guy.

And I will be the first one to say that Texas has not always owned OU. We’ve just done it more often. Hah!

Don't forget "The Tech game was a FLUKE!!!!!! Pay no attention to that AP Poll voters"

Even though we were winning (or tied 0-0) for 58 minutes and change.

if there’s something wrong with our water perhaps Stoops should stop recrutiing down here then.

UT will be awesome...

…on defense. They have Muschamp. He’s the best DC in rhe B12 and knows how to coach up personnel. Judging from our experiences, though, I can’t say the same about breaking in a new QB and OL.

by HiDesertSooner on Nov 24, 2009 9:34 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

You are probably right

Will Muschamp is definitely the best DC in the B12, and other conferences as well.

by scarab on Nov 25, 2009 6:38 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I couldn't disagree more.

Carl/Bo Pelini.

They took, by far, the worst defense in the Big XII two years ago to the number 3 scoring defense in the country and the second best overall defense in the Big XII with far less talent than UT has.

GBR!!!

but those two are very god as well. Wish Bo was still on OU’s staff.

Barring poor officiating.

Remember the BS no block in the back call on Shipley’s punt return last year? Wow.

Your complaining about officiating? Really?

Holding Calls against TT- 0

Thats just two very blatant holding calls on Brian Orakpo that i could find pictures of. The last thing you should be doing, is complaining about the officiating of that game.

Playing in Lubbock

is really becoming a thorn in OU and UT’s national title hopes year after year.

It Ain't Easy, But It's Worth It.

Just think if OU had to play in Austin and Texas had to travel to Norman.......

Tables for the Big 12 South would be seriously overturned. I think the outcome of the South would be a toss up every year……

No it would still be between Oklahoma and Texas every year just like now.

The only thing would be that the list of champions would read Texas, Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma…

They also have a favorable schedule next year

I expect that by the time the offense gets to Dallas for the RRS, they will have worked out most any problems that they might have from a new QB and OL after rolling through Rice & Wyoming. UCLA will be a much stiffer test, but I think playing at home and the stout defense carries them (a recurring assumption for next season in my predicitions). I think if they get through the game with us, they then have two weeks to prepare for the game at Nebraska. I think they win in Lincoln in a tough one b/c they have those two weeks to prepare.

I see a possible speed bump in Manhattan just b/c Snyder is wily that way and I expect that KSU will be better next year and will be primed for a signature win. But at that point, they may be playing with so much confidence and if they are still healthy at that point in the season, they may just roll through Manhattan and not even notice the bump that was the Wildcats.

They will avenge their loss in Lubbock and roll into the Big 12 Championship game after a hard-fought win against the Aggies at home (that is the deciding factor to me). They play in the BCS Championship game and win another title over Alabama from the mighty S – E – C.

Sadly, I expect that we will be bitterly discussing how it is that Mack Brown has won four in a row in the RRS, is winning all the recruiting battles, and has lined up Muschamp to take over a well-oiled football empire that has won back-to-back national championships and 3 in the past 6 years, while we watch from the jalopy that the Sooner Schooner has become since Mike Stoops left.

2010 – UT Football Schedule
09/04 at Rice (WIN) (1-0)
09/11 WYOMING (WIN) (2-0)
09/18 UCLA (WIN) (3-0)
09/25 FLORIDA ATLANTIC (WIN) (4-0)
10/02 vs. Oklahoma (Dallas) (WIN) (5-0)
10/16 at Nebraska (WIN) (6-0)
10/23 IOWA STATE (WIN) (7-0)
10/30 BAYLOR (WIN) (8-0)
11/06 at Kansas State (LOSS) (8-1)
11/13 OKLAHOMA STATE (WIN) (9-1)
11/20 at Texas Tech (WIN) (10-1)
TBD TEXAS A&M (WIN) (11-1)

Best post I’ve ever seen over here.

Well, don't get too attached to those predictions

I also thought that this season would be tough, but really thought we would end up at 9-3 or so and worst case was a 8-4, although that was with our full lineup, so my predictive powers are not in the Carnac the Great league or anything.

Most of the above is based upon the fact that y’all have 7 games at home and the tough ones are late in the season. It is possible that Nebraska is greatly improved, but looking at their roster I think they have 3 or 4 key losses on defense and their offense is such a mess that I think they still will not be able to do much on that side of the ball.

I could see us pulling an upset in Dallas, but I just think that we are going to have multiple holes next year on both sides of the ball that will be too great for us to overcome – if defense was our strength this year, next year it could be our weakness. I hope that I am wrong and that somehow we right the Schooner next year, but we face, I think, a tougher non-conference slate at UCincy, Florida State, Air Force, and the token cream puff Utah State. If we open with Cincy, we could really be in trouble, but UC’s site shows that game on Sept. 25th. So we could be 2-2 after those four games going into the RRS, although realistically, I think we might also be 3-1.

I just hope that the Sun Bowl turns into a turning point like the 2007 Holiday Bowl was for y’all.
