The Rumor Mill Is Cranking About Bob Again

Wait, a job might open up? Better drop Bob Stoops' name!

Wait, a job might open up? Better drop Bob Stoops' name!

The rumor on ESPN is based around this article from the Chicago Sun Times which says the following:

If athletic director Jack Swarbrick decides Weis' Notre Dame career is over after his fifth season, a source said Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz will be in the mix to replace him. The source said Stoops has told confidants he would be interested in talking to the Irish.

The only thing that makes these rumors a little juicier is that Stoops has been receiving a lot of criticism this year, as has the coaching staff (Kevin Wilson in particular). For what it's worth, Jim Harbaugh's name also popped up today in rumors about Notre Dame.

One thing seems likely - the Irish are tiring of Charlie Weis, and they have blocked their plane on Flight Aware so people can't see who they may or may not be flying into South Bend.

Another similiar rumor I've heard

was Urban Meyer to Notre Dame as he has state in past that was his “dream job”, and Stoops going to Florida.

Hey….it was just a rumor I heard. Why would Meyer leave Florida? Hell, I think it’s a step down, but maybe losing Teebow, and Brandon Spikes after this year, might be good timing for him to maintain his legacy.

Another Rumor I've heard

was the big buy-out Stoops has in his contract, would be “Negotiable” this year, if Stoops really wanted to leave. Apparently from what I’ve heard, is the big shots are worried about a show down over Stoops assistant coaches.

As usual, I haven't heard any rumors

Redhawk, what is the meaning of “a show down over Stoops assistant coaches” ?

Are the folks up top tired of them?

Not sure "tired"

There is a worry that if the big shots say “Fire Wilson and/or Venables” as a need of change, and showing the fans things won’t remain the same. , Stoops may tell ‘em to F off because he’s pretty protective of his coaches. Which of course than becomes showing up his boss.

got it

but IMHO, and it doesn’t mean diddle to Bob I am sure, if he isn’t questioning Wilson then I would like to know why? Recruit evaluation, backups being trained and ready, development of players etc.

What if, just what if LJ went down in game 2 of next season. Do you think Wilson has learned and has #2 ready? I don’t.

Oh, I personally feel Wilson has to go at a minimum

and maybe Venables too (though he’s finally has a good defense this year). I get the feeling, Stoops wants control. He may see Wilson needs to go too, but Stoops want’s to be the one making that call, and not the Athletic Department or Regents, etc.

Oh, and Al Eshback on WWLS said last night (Tuesday) Stoops will not leave OU until his kids are out of High School. Period. End of Story. (kids are 10-13 according to Barry Trammel)

Venables

I personally don’t see how Venables can be let go. In our 4 losses this year, we’ve given up a total of 61 points, that’s 15 points a game. That means our offense isn’t even scoring 2 TD’s…
