"This next running play is going to be a doozy". (AP Photo/J. Pat Carter)

We ran the ball on 1st and 45? To be honest, I've never had a team I root for in that situation, but if you have 45 yards to gain, why would you run the ball? Why? I mean, it worked out in the end on 3rd down (thanks entirely to Broyles), but still...

Did that strike anyone else as odd?

Perhaps annoying?

Oh, Kevin Wilson, you make my blood boil.

Here's What Wilson Had To Say About That

"My first idea was that we had so many negative plays that I ran it, to settle everybody down and see where we were at and see if we could get in that 50 yard field goal range. As we always tell the quarterbacks, you don’t have to throw it and both of those throws were check down throws. When it is third and real long, and you throw it underneath and make a guy miss, getting the ball in space is good. So the nice thing is that Landry (Jones) didn’t force it."

That 1st and 45 conversion was pivotal

… and no I was not disturbed OU ran on 1st down, which is not an option in your poll. Heck, they converted for crying out loud. Watching that conversion take place is one of the offensive highlights of the year for this offense. It made me jump up off the couch in disbelief and very glad I wasn’t watching the Vols thrash Spurrier in the rain after all just 10 miles away. Made me forget all about any first down call.

I have to agree with inocybe

I’m not bothered by it…mostly because, for the first time all season, the rushing attack actually seemed to be working somewhat this season. In fact, the complete lack of rushing ineptitude in this game will actually stick out for me as much as the 1st-and-45 conversion. The O-line had actually been doing some decent running blocking up to that point, such that CB and Demarco had done some real damage. We’re still not talking about 2008 numbers, but comparing last night’s rushing performance, especially earlier in the game and prior to the 1st-and-45 situation, to all of this year’s previous games, and there was marked improvement.

Against that backdrop, Wilson was probably thinking, “They’re looking for the pass, so a run play will be fairly unexpected. Plus, we’ve been running pretty well tonight, so even if we only get what we’ve been getting, that’s 5-10 yards on first down.” Finally, in the game situation OU was in and their field (in K-State’s end even with 1st-and-45…the line to gain was near K-State’s 10 as I recall it), they’re probably in either a) 4-down territory, or b) in position to kick a field goal and go up by 8, even if they only get half the yardage they need.

On that basis, I don’t think it was that bad a call.

I think Wilson is crazy.

read the quote of Wilson. It is purely nuts. 3rd and long, throw it underneath and hope you make a guy miss. My math says that doesn’t work 80% of the time. 3rd and long you should have at least two receivers past the marker.

The more Wilson talks the more we learn about his mindset. It appears he always thinking about the next series/next possession and hoping they will do better when they get the ball back. Time to drop that line of thought and play like each drive is the last opportunity. They ask the players to play like they ‘mean it’, it’s time Wilson coaches like he ‘means it’.

There's not that many....

….plays in the play book for 3rd and really long. Sometimes it’s best to take what they give you and hope that your athletes can make something happen. That’s better than forcing the ball into coverage and risking the turnover. I don’t really see why everyone is so down on Wilson. I think Jones has played pretty well and when you lose Bradford, Gresham, Iglesias, Johnson and four really good offensive lineman, then a dropoff should be expected. Personally I wish that Patton had coached up the offensive linemen a little bit better but Stoops admitted today that he wasn’t real optimistic about this group. It’s been a weird season and I’m willing to chalk it up as just that. Stoops isn’t a terrible coach all of a sudden and neither are the assistants. Florida, Texas, Alabama and USC would all be struggling if they had the injuries and graduation losses that we had since last year.

It wasnt that it was a run play that upset me, it was the particular run that was called. Get Murray the ball, but not right up the gut, please!

The last time I saw up-the-gut running play work

for long yardage was AD carrying the ball. Before that it was Kenny King, David Overstreet, and Steve Owens You have to be a serious hoss to pull that play off. We don’t have those kind of hoss’s now days. Murray and Brown both have the speed but the guy carrying the rock has to be ready to bust heads and tackles to power thru whatever is there
