Sooners Picked 3rd In Preseason Conference Basketball Rankings
When a team is the consensus #1 in the nation is should come as no surprise that they're unanimously selected to win the conference. The Kansas Jayhawks picked up 11 first place votes by the conference coaches in the preseason poll and seeing as how you're not allowed to vote for your own team that makes it a unanimous selection. Texas (Booo!) picked up the other first place vote and sits at #2 followed by Oklahoma.
The surprise to me was Oklahoma State selected at #6. For some reason I expected that to be a bit better. Last year the Sooners were the preseason favorites to win the conference and finished second to Kansas. In 2004-05 Oklahoma was the 4th pick in the preseason and shared the conference championship with Kansas.
| Team (First Place Votes) | Points |
| 1. Kansas (11) | 121 |
| 2. Texas (1) | 111 |
| 3. Oklahoma | 95 |
| 4. Kansas State | 92 |
| 5. Texas A&M | 74 |
| 6. Oklahoma State | 69 |
| 7. Missouri | 66 |
| 8. Iowa State | 57 |
| 9. Texas Tech | 34 |
| 10. Baylor | 33 |
| 11. Nebraska | 27 |
| 12. Colorado | 13 |

The Conference
This year the conference seems really top heavy. The first 6-7 teams should be anywhere from great (Kansas) to very solid (Mizzou) but the bottom 5 teams may all be really bad. I suppose its possible Baylor could be alright but outside of them the rest are all likely to be horrible. It is disappointing that schools like Tech and Iowa St., with some basketball tradition can’t field stronger teams. Oh well, it will still be fun to watch the top 6 battle it out, its just too bad that the bottom feeders will be so awful.
