From the Tulsa World
NORMAN — Senior linebacker Ryan Reynolds said Tuesday he hopes to return for another season at Oklahoma. He will do so if the NCAA grants him a medical hardship based on his series of knee injuries over the past three years. The hardship would give Reynolds a sixth season of eligibility in 2010.
"We're trying to get a medical right now. It’s in the process with the NCAA," he said. "I don’t think I’ll find out until the end of the season."

Exceptions to the NCAA’s five-year eligibility rule are made through the NCAA "Circumstances Beyond Control" bylaw. It calls for consideration of "situations clearly supported by contemporaneous medical documentation, which states that a student-athlete is unable to participate in intercollegtiate competition as a result of incapacatating physical or mental circumstances."

Usually there’s a percentage, I believe usually measuring out to the third or fourth game in a season, of the season in which a player may participate and be eligible for a sixth season. Roddrick Muckelroy, for example, missed a lot of his redshirt-frosh season, and is almost a lock for a sixth year if he requests it. Did Reynolds go down for the season in the 4th game or earlier in one of his first few years? I don’t think last year would qualify.

In the article...

It says he missed the entire ’06 season and then missed the 7 or 8 games after the OU/TX game last year. So almost 2 full seasons.

I didn't know he missed the entire '06 season

If that’s the case, then he probably gets the sixth season, but the 2008 season probably wouldn’t be any help to his cause at all.

I think it will actually

DeMarcus Granger only missed one year and he was denied. I think missing half or more of 2008 will probably put him over the top and allow his to get it. It’s sad for Granger though. If he could have gotten the 6th year he hopefully could have got back on track, had a good year, and maybe a shot at a NFL career.

Granger probably should have been granted, but the criteria are fairly specific

I do believe that a player can’t have played in more than three games in one particular season, and that all three must have been in the first half of the season. That’s specifically for football, and when the player missed the rest of the time due to injury. I don’t know which specific season OU had applied to have restored to Granger as a medical redshirt season, but my guess is the reason it was denied was that he played in a game past the halfway mark or something.

Anyone know for sure?

As for Reynolds, I don’t believe there is any provision in the medical redshirt rule for consideration of partial time missed in another season. Seasons are evaluated individually.

Looking at Reynolds' bio

I know it doesn’t show the entire picture, but here’s what his bio says about participation in his first three seasons:

2006 – 9 games played
2007 – 13 games played
2008 – 6 games played

If they’re petitioning for a medical redshirt for 2008, in which he went down in the sixth game, then there might be some standing there. I’ll need to check into a little more. One of my profs has worked a lot of NCAA eligibility cases and is a published author on amateur eligibility issues, so I might see what she has to say about it.
