Overnight BCS Title Game Discussion Thread
That really sucked.
Here is where you can bring the comments about the game, recap the season, and try to see into your crystal ball for what might be in '09.
I am also going to say this now, the first sign of any name calling, cursing, or anything of that matter will not be tolerated. I don't care if you are a Sooner, Longhorn, or anything, I want real discussion and not childish name calling or anything alone those lines.
I know we are all upset about what happened tonight, so if you don't think you can follow those rules, then why don't you sleep on it and comment in the morning when you have had time to cool down. Thanks

I'm really looking for a response here
Tonight I read up on what a Sooner is cause I had just never really cared enough to find out. I was a tad shocked to discover that you guys are named after people who illegally took land in the Oklahoma region before it was made available. Is this common knowledge among students and is this ok? This isn’t meant to be sarcasm but it is kinda shocking. A school wouldn’t call themselves the "x criminals" so why name yourself something that indicates you broke a law? Is it really no big deal to anyone there?
by Pantheon on Jan 8, 2009 11:52 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Well in the literal and historical sense that is what it means
The term Sooners has since evolved to mean “a person ahead of the curve”. The Boomers were the ones that went at the boom of the cannon for the land run also.
Really the ones that go to the school, myself included, find it a little humorous and don’t think too much of it.
I look at it more as a very unique name that ties back to Oklahoma coming into statehood. Oklahoma became a state in 1904 and the university started playing sports back in 1914.

Seriously?..Ok, I'll give it a try
first off, Oklahoma was settled by the white man, in a series of “Land Runs”, literally a race to claim, a quarter section of land….for free. The 2 biggest ones where the land run of 1889, that settled, basically the Oklahoma City area. The next was the land run that opened the Cherokee Outlet, or a NW Oklahoma. First one to the land, and the flag…won the land, and owned it.
A “Sooner” was a person, that started before the gun went off. (On you mark, get set…HEY! he went too soon!) A “Boomer” snuck in before the race usually the night before and was at the land when others got there. So yes a “Sooner” is technically a land cheat. But it’s also a unique piece of history, as no other state, had this type of settlement (I think Arizona, had a small one) It’s more about the unique history. A Sooner only happened, cause Oklahoma, had the land run.
Is it considered a bad thing? Not really. More like “Bootlegger” on the scale of nefarious types.
Do a lot of people know this meaning? sadly, no.
Are we ashamed? No, not at all, it’s a part of our history. Not all our history is good. In fact here are some other unsavory mascots: Rebels, Jayhawks, Wolverines (it ain’t about the animal kids), Louisiana Bayou Tigers (again, not an animal), not to mention Indian tribe names, like Utes, or Seminoles or Chippewas, or Illini, etc

More land run info: OU artist in residence. is producing a MASSIVE memorial to commemorate the land run, using greater then life size bronzes. It’s pretty amazing: Here’s a link
And a picture of one of the bronzes:

Here’s a famous shot of “The Run” for the Outlet. My grandparents on both side made the run getting land in Grant county near Pond Creek, OK

Oh….and I thought of a couple more unsavory mascots: Pirates, Buccaneers, Warriors. I mean, does any one think that being named after a killing thief at sea, is something to be ashamed of?

No one disputes the background of the original "Missouri Tigers"
Emphasis added:
The town’s preparedness discouraged any guerilla activity and the protecting organization began to disband in 1854. However, it was rumored that a guerilla band, led by the notorious Bill Anderson, intended to sack the town. Quickly organized was an armed guard of Columbia citizens, who built a blockhouse and fortified the old courthouse in the center of town. This company was called “The Missouri Tigers.”
The Missouri Tigers were the company that protected the city of Columbia. They were not the group of men who traveled west to sack Lawrence. I’m not sure how a volunteer company whose sole objective is city defense qualifies under the same terminology in your book.
I’m not trying to flame this argument back up again. Like I’ve said, I’m not a native Missourian and thus I’m not deeply attached or affected by any of the naming. But in a discussion of naming a mascot after criminals, the point is certainly relevant, especially since so few know the history behind the Jayhawk name, and as a result, the MU/KU rivalry.

I just meant that it was interesting how they were both tied...
to fighting w/Bill Anderson and Co. Not saying they are the same as yes you are correct they chose different means of doing so, but I until last night had no idea the Missouri Tiger was even connected to that time period…after the above mentioned the Woverines, LSU Tigers, etc. I started looking around at the origins of some of the mascots and was surprised how many were related to historical references.

Here's some football discussion
I think Stoops goofed up for not kicking the field goal at the goalline. I then didn’t agree about kicking a 49 yard FG (that got blocked). Those situations should have been reversed, in my opinion.
And then Bradford made sort of a bad decision trying to squeeze that ball in at halftime. Gotta make sure, in that situation, you either give your receiver a chance or nobody a chance, and then at least get 3 points. OU won the first half but the score was still tied.

I liked the call in the 1st to go for it from the 1
but I think a play action would have worked a lot better.
Bradford admitted after the game that he tried to force that pass in there and instead should have fired it out the back of the endzone.

I dunno,
the CB/safety made a great play on the ball and it was popped up into the air, not Sam’s fault really, the ball was thrown low.
Borderline interference too, IMO, like a few other times in the game, like the last play on OU’s final drive—Iglesias was interfered with, IMO.

it's stoops' nature
easy for us to call it bad in hindsight, but while i agree with you there’s no doubt it’s simply reflective of the way stoops coaches. he really seems to love gaming the high risk/high reward scenarios. the fake punt against texas and onside kick against WVU are good examples. it was still early enough in the game that maybe he didn’t know how well the Florida defense would contain things (i.e. even if i lose these points there are plenty more chances). however in my mind, he should have seen that both the texas and florida games were turning into long-term battles and those decisions provide a huge opportunity to give large momentum to the opponent.

or if the used the Hurry-up on 3rd down and tried to get a good play called on 4th. That would have forced Florida to prepare for a potential pass. Florida and all of us watching knew it was going to be in Brown’s hands.

I agree...
I commend Stoops for going for it on 4th and goal before the 1st redzone stop. However if I was coach, my team would have kicked the field goal with 10 seconds left before halftime so that we could go into the locker room with a 10-7 lead. Overall however, I couldn’t be happier with the Sooners. Yea, it sucks seeing my team lose 5 out of their last 6 bowl games. Yea, it sucks seeing my team lose 3 out of 4 national championships. Yea, it sucks that the SEC claims dominance again this season and rightfully so. But I have and will get over it. Next season, I hope for 3 things: OU beating Texas, OU winning a bowl game, and the “every sports network Tebow love fest to end.” OU played a great game. Its great to be a Sooner.

Hindsight is 20/20; however, looking back, going for it on 4th down on the 1-yard line was the best play. Oklahoma had the momentum and I don’t think there is any question that going for it was the right option.

Restrained Frustration
I think htownsooner may be taking this a bit too far with his demands for Stoops to be fired but I completely understand the anger and discontent. I myself have spewed obscenities tonight because I am so sick and tired of seeing OU lose games when the other team is given more than a week to prepare. This is a repeated pattern that points directly to preparation and therefore coaching. The problem with all of this is how mad can you get at a guy who has been in 4 national championships in 9 years?

From an outsider's point of view,
it looks like Stoops and OU struggle either with complacency, when they underestimate a foe, or when they play a team just as good or perhaps better than them—when things aren’t clicking like they usually do.
Seems like Stoops isn’t as good in those rare situations. Would like OU Fan’s take on that.

As a longhorn fan I have a few observations
1. Why was Brown getting so many carries. I kept thinking play action, play action only to see it handed off. What gives?
2. Tebow aint a great quarterback. He can run but please that weaksauce shuttle pass and a few near-laterals are considered for half his completions? He can run though
3. Didnt like the Nic Harris ankle yank on Percy Harvin. Im surprised no one cared.
4. The INT on the goalline wasn’t really Braford’s fault. If it were a TD we would be singing the praises.
5. This 4th quarter reminded me of the red-river shootout

Both interceptions to me weren't Bradford's fault...
Both times, the football was in the hands or went through the hands of the receiver. Manny Johnson’s hands touched the football just as Iglesias’ hands. Most of Bradford’s interceptions this season in my opinion could be blamed on the receivers not catching the ball. But, that doesn’t really matter. As to Nic Harris, he’s a great athlete but it will not bother me seeing him leave. I will however miss the prescence of Lendi Holmes. That guy is extremly fast.
by EnragedOUfan on Jan 9, 2009 6:36 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree on the first interception
Iglesias surely should have caught the second int pass, and I agree with you on that. On the first, however, Bradford stared down his receiver for about 3 solid seconds. He really, really telegraphed that pass, and as a result there were about 5 UF guys around the receiver when the ball was finally thrown. Yes, it might have still been a completion, but it was not a good decision by Bradford.

Greed
Does everybody remember the last time that OU got greedy and an average of 8 wins a year with a bowl victory wasn’t good enough? Gary Gibbs was no where near the coach Bob Stoops is but because folks got greedy and wanted more, we went through the Schnellenberger/Blake era. Is that what everybody wants again? Greed will kill you!

I'm curious about how the OU community receives Stoops after this loss.
As a Texas fan, I obviously am hoping he leaves for Denver, because I doubt if his replacement will be nearly as competent. But there will certainly be an emotional reaction from the Sooner fanbase after this loss, and it will be interesting to see if that proves a factor in his decision.
Its a tough spot to be in, you want to wring his neck for lack of preparation in these big games (and why does he keep abandoning the hurry-up when its working?), but you also need to make him feel welcome and stable if you want to keep him.

Random musings from a burnt orange insomniac
I’ve noticed over the last week that the media continually brings up the fact that OU scores 60 on their opponents to support the idea that OU is the best offense in the nation. I’ve also noticed that in many of the games where OU scores 60, the game was basically over by the middle of the 3rd quarter. Most coaches would pull the starters in this situation or at least quit trying to find the endzone (Pete Carrol against JoePa), but Stoops leaves his best boys out there. I am certainly biased, being a UT student, but when Mack pulls McCoy at the beginning of the 4th against A&M, easily the most deserving of a beating by virtue of being the most obnoxious school in the Big XII, and Bob Stoops is still running the no huddle as time runs out, the “Bob Stoops has no class” statement starts to seem legit. That being said I do think the sooners did an OK job at representing the Big XII, though I do wish we were there instead. Oh and by the way, drove through Oklahoma City and Norman (depressing) the other day, so I decided to see the OU campus since we always play at Dallas an I’d never seen it. Whats up with that gorilla statue thing with wings and boobs? I thought Austin was weird.

It really doesn't matter
what you want to say or post about this Sooner team or the Sooners in general.
This was a great team. They had a great year.
They may have lost another BCS game. We get it, that sucks. As fans we do not like it. You can be pissed. You can call for firing. Whatever floats your boat.
Yes, we can second guess coaching decisions. We can relive it or forget it.
But, I personally will not say one negative word about the guys who play on this Sooner team.
They are champs in my book. For every single play of every game of this season they were Warriors. What more could we ask of them.
I don’t have the time to list the accomplishments of this team. They are too numerous.
They didn’t play some chump team tonight. The other team has players who are trying to win.
At the end of every game there is only one winner. At the end of every season there is only one champion.
Trust me, I understand that at OU they play for championships. It would have been awesome if we had won them all. We didn’t. Deal with it.
I don’t care about what other teams fans think about what I am posting. I personally don’t care what anyone thinks, these are my opinions.
The Oklahoma Sooners Football Team will live to play another day.

If I was a Texas fan, I would love to read your cow/steer/queer comments. Because it means you don’t feel confident enough to keep the discussion about football.
I am definitely not complacent but through the frustration trying to be realistic. Everybody wants to be #1. Everybody wants to win championships. But guess what? Not everybody can number one. And furthermore, nobody is going to be number one every year. Demand better. Don’t be satisfied with losing championship games. But stay realistic or else you miss the joy of being a part of a consistent championship winning program.

Sure,
you can ‘want’ to be #1 every year, alotta teams have that goal. Realistically though, no team is going to be #1 every year, it’s laughable to think that would actually happen.
If a team wins the NC once every 5 to10 years that’s a GREAT team. NCs are rare to come by.

ok…i’ll stay on the idea of football and leave out the “other” comments (granted you laughed im sure). Stoops is a gambler, love that about him. Bradford cant always thread the needle (int in the endzone at end of 1st half) but he’s still a gamer, ask leach from tech. Anyone can see that we are power stricken…if its not murray its brown, if not brown its madu….same at end with english and alexander….in the middle with our always getting hurt linebackers…we are strong all the way through our depth chart. This is a tribute to stoops and his recruiting…and im telling you (like you dont already know) stoops knows how to make a good high school player into an NFL prospect…the guy’s a great coach…but what the hell? with all this talent, how can we lose 5 (6?) out of last 7 or 8 bowl games we’ve been in. Yes i know we werent playing anything burnt orange tonight. So i’ll give you that i should act with more class than by taking jabs at a big dumb defenseless animal we didnt even play (in my nature to hate’em). As far as the tsipper game it wasnt just another conference game….that’s a must win. apparently you didnt leave one state to play for the other…that’s up there on the “thou shalt never…” do list…dont know about you but proudly being a sooner when raised to be a longhorn means a little more than just another conference game. i proudly say we have a classier program that’s why it hurts so much to lose to them and then pass on the chance to beat a florida team we had the opportunity to thrash and ultimately rub into the faces of every longhorn that we are #1 (maybe not classy, but you would do it)…ultimately again always our goal. after all #2 is just the first place loser…

Every encounter I had with an Oklahoma fan was a pleasant one, even in defeat.
Sam Bradford is a great QB and certainly proved why he was a deserving Heisman winner.
Best of luck in 2009.

Turnover
Can you believe how many times the ball bounced around before it was intercepted by Florida? It must have bounced off 4 sets of hands. I hate those kind of interceptions/turnovers.
Florida should be a great team going into 2009, but Oklahoma will lose a majority, if not all of their offense…

Wel
that sucked. Not at all the game I expected. I didn’t think we could be held to 14 points in a whole game.
Bottom line, Florida, made plays. Made much more than OU did, and that’s why they won.
Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.

Hat Tip.
You guys played a great game. We had a handful of better plays and that’s why we won. Thank you for the challenge of the season. You guys deserved to be there with us. Congrats on a great season and we’ll see you soon, hopefully in similar circumstances. Boomer Sooner and Go Gators!

Sooner nation,
can’t wait to see you guys next year in Dallas. As insane as this rivalry always is, 2008 definitely added to the hatred on both sides. The Cotton Bowl is going to be rockin!

Good game
Well at least in this BCS bowl, the Sooners were in it till the last 6 minutes. I had no doubt in my mind that Florida would eventually win though. OU’s no huddle offense looked liked a hot mess to me…Bradford didn’t seem so confident..but he had some amazing throws. And were the refs a little too flag happy?!
But the real question now is if the voters were actually correct in sending the right team to the BCS game…you don’t know what the outcome would have been if Texas, USC or Utah would have played Florida. OU has gotten the benefit of the doubt a few times, hopefully, that will be corrected.
Monday…OU vs TX bball. :)

This is not an indictment of your program, in general...
…for the Sooners actually played some impressive defense last night, but it does heartwarm those of us from Big 10 (11?) country to see Big 12 teams play someone with a defense. Yes, your league’s Playstation Tecmo Bowl offenses are exciting to the average, unknowledgeable fan and promoted by EvilSPN ad nauseum, but defenses win championships when coupled with a balanced offense. I was rooting for you as I am now surrounded by Sooner fans (yes, the rabid must be appeased for personal safety), but Tebow certainly has the look of a winner. Bradford almost had that Neil O’Donnell look in his eyes last night,, and that is not a good thing. Yes, the Big 10 (11?) did not impress this year, but Ohio State could have beaten Texas if Tressel didn’t commit to a JoePa impersonation and if Penn State had played Penn State football they could have beaten USC. Good game last night. Better luck next year. Hey, you don’t have to keep it civil. I enjoy the shots.

Nic Harris
Btw, that was a dirty play by him to try and twist Harvin’s ankle.
stay classy.
by nyclonghorngal on Jan 9, 2009 9:51 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Twist?
He tried to pick up Harvin and pull him back (not twist), to persuade the refs to give the Sooners a better spot.
This happens quite frequently.

It looked like a twist...
…to me. We replayed it numerous times and it was quite shocking.
by Pentimental on Jan 9, 2009 10:09 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Come now
you lose all reasonable credibility with that remark. It was clearly an attempt to aggrovate Harvin’s injury.
by BrooklynHorn on Jan 9, 2009 2:20 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
From what I've seen of Nic Harris,
he’s a very good player, but tries to be an intimidator and frequently does some borderline ‘dirty’ things. I could be wrong. But in the Mizzou game he looked a bit out of control.

It was a twist.
He was trying to injure Harvin. This was clear from the replay. Don’t try to spin this one fellas. Pretty disappointing. But otherwise the game was pretty clean and both teams fought hard.

Gator here.
Good game. Glad to see the Big 12 offense vs. SEC defense argument cleared up.
Your defense played their guts out first half, but just couldn’t hold on 3rd downs, and it really hurt second half. Our defense, well, you know how that went.
Best part of last night: our two-deep on defense has 20 of 22 (probably) coming back. Scary huh? If Tebow comes back…. drool
by falcontom on Jan 9, 2009 10:48 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
OU also has several coming back on Defense
18 of the top 22 from the BCS game.
Offense, however is a much different story where OU will lose 12 of 22 off it’s 2 deep including 4 of the 5 starting Offensive line, That is assuming Gresham and Bradford go pro, which I fully expect for both.
Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.
by Redhawk on Jan 9, 2009 11:01 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
If Bradford goes Pro, there goes another OU/UT game
That is precisely why I was absolutely against Bradford getting the Heisman. He is so important to our program. Now with a new quarterback, Colt McCoy is sure to succeed.
OU -- 7 National Championships; 6 Big 12 Championships; 5 Heisman Winners; Most winning college football program since WW2
UT--4 National Championships; 2 Big 12 Championships; 2 Heisman Winners

OU Defense
You have to admit, our D did suprise you all. Did you guys expect those 2 turnovers? Probably not.
Tebow will come back. Is there any Gator fans among you that find it a little over the top that the media is treating him like a saint? Some of the commentators last night were really touting him.

Alright, here's my take,
I’m sure I’m not saying anything original here.
OU had it’s chances to win that game, to create some separation in the 1st half. They started to establish the run with Chris Brown in the 2nd qtr, which carried into the 2nd half. They probably should have taken the fgs both times they were denied in the red zone since the game was such a defensive struggle. I don’t particularly blame them for going for the tds though, especially the drive where Brown was having great success running down the field, but at the goal line they should have done a play action pass to Gresham or something on the 3rd or 4th down—FL just stacked the box.
FL’s D proved to be the difference though, not allowing the Sooners to establish any consistency in their vaunted passing game and getting, what was it, 3 picks?
Tebow was also the difference maker in the 4th qtr, making the plays when it counted.
I still think OU was on equal footing and coulda/shoulda won the game.

Man
It’s a different ballgame if we capitalize in the redzone.
That was a tough one to swallow knowing we had our chances. Oh, well, there’s always next year.
I have to agree with you on all the Tebow love. Before it never bothered me much because he’s such a good kid, but now it’s getting a little out of hand.

Yep,
if you guys could have gone up, say, 17-7 by the half, you probably win that game. Let it slip away.
Tebow’s very good, got some great intangibles, but c’mon, he’s got a fabulous supporting cast.

I'm a nooby one-timer; NOt a troll; calm down, I'm here respectfully........
OK help me out here. I’m just the normal opposing team guy checking out the other team’s blogs during the week of the game. I enjoyed reading this great site all week. (except for the Texas trolls – nothing against Texas, but come on guys let it go) I usually never sign up and throw out a week’s worth of comments because that is so troll-ish. I’m a gator born and bred, (used to go to UF games in the 60s and 70s as a toddler with the other couple hundred people – things change) But…I just have to ask two legitimate curiosity type questions of the Sooner Nation. I’m sitting here watching the replay of the game on FL sunshine network Friday nite…..help me out please.
1) I know what a Sooner is (since I took 3rd grade american history), they were gritty people – but what is with the “Boomer” thing. Is it the baby boomers after the sooners? I guess I could google it but I am lazy like that.
2) This is my main question. WHO is the guy they keep showing on the sidelines for OU – the D coordinator I think. You HAVE to admit he has a second job as the SHAM-WOW TV ad guy with the head set and all. hahhaa. He looks EXACTLY like him. Seen it? spitting image!!! LOL
Anyways, I love college football Thanks OU for bringing the tradition and the great chills-up-the-spine traditional fight song to the big game. Sorry it didn’t work out – but all of us college football fans have been on both sides of the big game win/loss thing before. We lost to Nebraska 176-3 a few years ago for the national championship and they also broke out best player’s legs at the same time. Good luck next year. Although, unlike OU – Gators are returning 95%+ of their team to the field, it could be our year again next year – that would be CRAZY to think about. anyway – thanks if anyone can answer my questions.
p.s. Bob Stoops is a GREAT coach. IMHO you should Lose the Fire Stoops thing. Appreciate that you have a top tier guy (trained by Steve Spurrier). We would bring him back to G-ville in a heartbeat. He can come coach for UF if you really think he sux. Don’t let one game or a kneejerk perceived issue about “big games” distort your entire perspective. Don’t dump a GREAT coach to go try and get lucky looking for a great coach for another decade. just sayin…..you might not find another coach that puts you in the big game every single year.
p.p.s This is really a nice college FB fan blog site. Thanks for what you do. Someone should alert Tennessee that the internet is now up and operating.
When does college football season start again : ( ……..?

Congrats
Congrats to the Sooners and their fans. You guys have a great team. It was an honor to play against you for our guys no doubt. Stoops and his staff did a great job. It was a hell of a game. Once again in a game like this, it always comes down to mistakes. We should both be in the running for a Rose Bowl Birth next season. Best wishes for 2009 for all you guys here.
