2008 Season Preview: Kansas
The Sooners will welcome the Kansas Jayhawks on October 18th for Home Coming. The Jayhawks were the miracle team of the Big 12 in 2007 finishing with a 12-1 record including a win over Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.
While the Jayhawks will still be good in `08 they’ll have a hard time repeating their `07 success. Kansas returns 15 starters (6 on offense, 9 on defense) but among those gone are last year’s leading rusher (Brandon McAnderson) and receiver (Marcus Henry). They do return at quarterback Todd Reesing who was the catalysts behind Kansas’ potent offensive attack.
| 2007 Offensive Leaders | ||
| Passing | Todd Reesing | 276/446, 3486 yards, 33 TD, 7 INT |
| Rushing | Brandon McAnderson | 190 carries 1146 yards, 16 touchdowns |
| Receiving | Marcus Henry | 54 receptions, 1014 yards, 10 touchdowns |
The Jayhawks also lost shutdown corner Aqib Talib but return 9 other defensive starters so you don’t have to look real hard at what should be the strength of this team. Kansas only gave up 16.4 points per game last year and held opponents to under 100 yards rushing per game.
| 2007 Defensive Leaders | ||
| Tackles | Joe Mortensen | 106 |
| Tackles for Loss | Joe Mortensen | 12 |
| Sacks | Joe Mortensen, Mike Rivera, Jake Laptad | 3 |
| Interceptions | Aqib Talib, Justin Thornton | 5 |
The last time Kansas came to Norman (2004) they turned the ball over three times and were routed 41-10. Don’t expect that this year because we’ll see a team that is much improved. A Sooner victory is very much in the realm of possibility but it won’t come easy.
