Big 12 Championship Game Thread: Sooners vs. Tigers

Big_12_title_graphic_medium

Big Thanks To Rock M Nation For The Graphic!

Location: Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City

Kickoff Time: 7:00

Television: ABC

Total Average Offense Yards (Rank)

Missouri 509.42 (6th), Oklahoma 556.67 (3rd)

Average Points Scored (Rank)

Missouri 45 (4th), Oklahoma 53.33 (1st)

Average Yards Allowed (Rank)

Missouri 396.5 (91st), Oklahoma 359.5 (66th)

Average Points Allowed (Rank)

 Missouri 24.67 (58th), Oklahoma 24.83 (60th)

Another year another championship game for Oklahoma. The Sooners just need to play their game and they should be fine. Avoid breakdowns, force turnovers and let the offense do its thing. If that happens then Bob Stoops will walk away tonight with his 6th Big 12 championship.

Official Machine Prediction: 42-35 Oklahoma – Boomer Sooner!!!

I know, I know! That is a close score but let me just say that I’ve called just about every game to be fairly close this season and most of them have resulted in blowouts. Why change now?

Doesn’t look like I’ll be on the game thread tonight as I’m gathered with some friends at a watch party. Talk it up though! Share all of your thoughts before, during and after the game here.

I am about as sick as one person can be

from that CBS broadcast team.

If it was up to them, Florida would get the BCS trophy tonight and Tebow would get the Heisman. All of that right now on the field.

I really really really hope OU and Texas matchup in the title game. Verne and Gary have got me so upset with CBS and the SEC that I want that to happen just to piss them off.

8:56 p.m. | Record Scoring
With 38 points scored in the first half, the Sooners set a record for points scored in a season during the modern era with 678 points, besting the previous mark held by Hawaii in 2006 (656). It took Hawaii 14 games to set that mark. This is Oklahoma’s 13th of the season. The all-time mark is 765 posted by the 1886 Harvard team. The Sooners currently are fifth on the list.

I was trying to point out that Texas had Colt McCoy in until the same point that we had Bradford in the MU game with pretty much the same score to counteract the threads about “no class”.

Don’t act so self-righteous that you wouldn’t want the Longhorns to go for it if they had the opportunity. It isn’t like they they were throwing into the end zone. It was a long run.

by ccmachine on Dec 6, 2008 10:41 PM CST up reply actions

It doesn't - in fact, I think it was bad coaching, but for different reason

If it were my call, I would have yanked the starters a lot earlier. Not probably as much for sportsmanlike reasons as just safety reasons, although sportsmanlike stuff would have factored in. As a coach though I would want my players to be able to say that they set a record, but also want to balance that with sportsmanship, so it would be hard. But again, to me, you pull your starters because you are looking to the next game.

We have already lost Murray with no idea (most likely) as to exactly how long he would be out. Not to mention our paper-thin depth at linebacker at this point. We really should not have taken a chance to have any other key players injured as we are going to absolutely have our hands full against whoever we play next.

Y'all should be happy, really....

It just sets us up for a bigger failure that you can rag on us forever. If we had not run up the score and set the record and the record setting overall scoring in the modern era, then we would not be favored against Florida. As it is, with all the blather that will come out of this game about “best offense”, blah, blah, blah, we will probably end up favored for the game and then you can point to our historic collapse.

We don’t need you to come on here reminding OU fans about our BCS losses. At least we played in those games.

In the BCS era, I believe OU and Texas have 1 National Championship apiece.
OU will play for another this year. Right now we have 7 total. How many does Texas have?

Of Course You Don't!

Just like you can’t see how losing to Texas Tech is relevant to the 2008 college football season.

You want to criticize OU for failing in a feat that the Longhorns haven’t even sniffed in trying to accomplish but since Texas isn’t good enough to make it to the big stage on a regular basis you fail to acknowledge any other program that has. Typical weak Texas propaganda.

Trust me this nonsense has been going on for the last few weeks.

Your not the first to get this bright idea.

I didn’t say we wouldn’t do it. I’ve seen the idiot’s over there that you have to deal with.
But you did join tonight and came on over.

Third String Running Back Scores The Final Touchdown On A 40 Yard Run

Seriously tell me that you wouldn’t want Texas to get that last score to set the record.

by ccmachine on Dec 6, 2008 11:48 PM CST up reply actions

No, because it was a dumb record.

Did you think going in to this season, “you know what record I’d like to break? The record for consecutive 60 point games. That would make my year.”

by ctex80 on Dec 6, 2008 11:56 PM CST up reply actions

How weak is that!

Because it wasn’t thought of at the beginning of the year? Are you kidding me? It had never been done in the history of the game.

I guess since you guys didn’t think that Colt McCoy was going to set the freshman touchdown record in 2006 it was a dumb record that shouldn’t have been accomplished. That is according to your own logic!

by ccmachine on Dec 7, 2008 12:07 AM CST up reply actions

You're deluded.

No one knew what the record was for consecutive 60 point games until ESPN told you. Toby, you’re a child.

by ctex80 on Dec 7, 2008 12:11 AM CST up reply actions

Actually We've Been Talking About It Here On This Site

But you wouldn’t know that because you just troll by to flame away out of jealousy.

You won’t even answer the question about wanting Texas to go for it if they were in that position. You know I have a point about wanting your teams to make history and you just look stupid talking in circles.

by ccmachine on Dec 7, 2008 12:22 AM CST up reply actions

Ok, I'll spell it out.

I would not want Texas to go for an arbitrary record and sacrifice decency in the process. Is that clear enough for you?

As a sooner fan

he doesn’t know what “decency” feels like, therefore he doesn’t know what us Texas fans stick to.

Uh - I gotta call shenanigans on that one

I have been an OU fan since I was a kid, so I was used to big scores under Switzer. It seemed normal. Unfortunately, I actually went to OU during the waning years of the Gibbs era. And then I lived through the bourbon-fueled fling with Schellenberger and several shellackings during Blake’s time (the 73-21 at the hands of Osborne really stung not to mention the beat down from A&M the next year). So, I saw the other side of the story through those years and it made me feel like we had suffered some kharmic retribution for all those years of beating up on Kansas, Iowa State, Kansas State, and others.

Do I personally wished that he would have pulled the starters earlier? Yes, but I could also see sitting on the sidelines and having the players tell me that they wanted the record to silence all the people saying they should not be there and letting them stay in. Again, personally, I think he should have pulled them all for safety reasons – that should be his primary focus as a coach. You criticize him for lack of class, I criticize him for lack of coaching smarts.

You are lying because it is only arbitrary in your mind since OU accomplished it.

You guys were wetting all over yourselves when McCoy set the record in 2006 and it only lasted one season. What Oklahoma did tonight hasn’t been accomplished, ever.

Whatever. Enjoy the win. You've got a very good team. You're playing for a title.

Scary factoid

Our longest losing streaks to any opponents – 8 – Texas and Kansas (although four of those losses came before we were a state, so not sure how that affects the trash talking on KU’s side – is it really all that prestigious to beat a territory?)

.0128 > 45-35

by chrisabo on Dec 7, 2008 1:07 AM CST up reply actions

Is this championship any less valid than 2006?

In that year if I recall correctly, you beat us, but then lost a couple games. So, you could argue that one was a sham also because we did not go undefeated in conference play, but still won the Big 12 championship. Basically, this year came down to a tie breaker that was brought on by three teams being tied at the top of the conference. A tie breaker that we did not cook up to deprive a specific team of a conference chmapionship, but that as far as I know all conference members agreed to a long time ago.

The idea is that if you are going to count head-to-head, then you have to count all the head-to-head games. And if that is equal, then you gotta figure out some other way to settle it. Is the BCS standings the right way? Right or wrong that is the current tie break determining factor and the computers came out barely on our side. They might break y’alls way tomorrow.

The winner of the RRS shall automatically win the Big 12 and go to the NC. Because it has been decided that one games head to head winner will be the greatest of all time.

On a completely unrelated note

Cincy is losing by a TD and it looks like the Rainbow Warriors are driving for another score at the start of the 4th quarter. It could be interesting to see what this does to the BCS rankings if Cincy loses. Not sure how much that win helped us in the computers, but I assume a fair amount and with a loss, they could drop pretty far in the polls.

Would we lose so much in the computers that it overtakes whatever ground we had made up in the last week with the win over OSU? OSU was 14th in the last BCS standings vs. 13th for Cinci.

by chrisabo on Dec 7, 2008 1:13 AM CST reply actions

It would make a difference but OU is also going to move up in the polls with the Alabama loss

That will help their position about as much as a Cincy loss would hurt. Things should be pretty much the same I would think.

by ccmachine on Dec 7, 2008 1:18 AM CST up reply actions

It would hurt Texas and help Florida in the computers

Since Florida beat Hawaii and OU beat Cincinnati.

Pick 6

That might start to make the UH QB a little shaky. If I were Cinci, I’d get the ball in Gilyard’s hands about a gajillion times before the end of this game.

I was stunned at the lack of touches that Maclin got. To me that is the diff between coaches like Urban Meyer and Gary Pinkel – Meyer recognizes Harvin is a special player and builds around him.Maybe Pinkel has done that, but I did not see it in tonight’s game or when Missouri played Texas earlier.

There is a good article on Dr. Saturday’s blog about Harvin and the play calls.

Gilyard with the big play

Did anyone see it? I am following it on the intertubes and just see 69 yard pass play. I assume Gilyard left someones groin area safety instrument in the upper deck.

by chrisabo on Dec 7, 2008 1:54 AM CST up reply actions

the intertubes finally come through

“Marshawn Gilyard made Hawaii pay for a fundamentally horrendous missed tackle on the right sideline, following a short completion by Grutza. Gilyard stayed up after a diving defender rolled off his back, then streaked 69-yards up the right side, to put the Bearcats back on top by five, at 29-24.”

So since we are assured of a place in the BCS title game, are the Longhorns going to defer the Big 12’s auto-bid to Texas Tech based on the two teams’ irrefutable, overriding head-to-head result, or does that only apply when it works in your favor?

Damn, I am glad you dudes went to bed finally. The smack after the game was kinda intense.

We had a great time at the game. Did you notice the kitty fans leaving after half time and by the end of the 3rd almost all Sooner peeps. Nice.

I thought we put on a great beatdown on Mizzou. Mizzou was hot-headed of course, Chase got chased al night long and Bradford looked very poised. What was with that pass-catch in the 4th. Clearly looked out of bounds and there was no review of that?

Did Whack Brown get a stage with ABC last night?

Main observation: the PA system in Arrowhead sucks all the way back to the 60’s.

On the catch in the 4th

It looked like his left foot touched just before his right foot did. The right foot may have been out of bounds but it was close. Probably not enough evidence to overturn the call.
