Is There A Kansas City Curse?

I’m not one to believe in the SI Jinx or the Madden Curse but I do recognize that something crazy happens when the Sooners play at Arrowhead Stadium. Saturday will mark the 7th time that OU has played in the Big 12 Championship game. Of their previous six championship games four have been in Kansas City, one in San Antonio and one in Houston.

In Kansas City the Sooners have only outscored their opponents by 28 points but in the two games played in Texas the Sooners are +43 points over their opponents.

Oklahoma’s Big 12 Championship History

Year Location Opponent Result
2000 Arrowhead Stadium Kansas State 27-24 W
2002 Reliant Stadium Colorado 29-7 W
2003 Arrowhead Stadium Kansas State 7-35 L
2004 Arrowhead Stadium Colorado 42-3 W
2006 Arrow Head Stadium Nebraska 21-7 W
2007 Alamodome Missouri 38-17 W

It’s that 35-7 loss to Kansas State that has left the bad taste in my mouth for Kansas City. Oklahoma has returned to the scene of the crime twice since then and have won by a combined score of 63-10. However, those wins were over lesser opponents than this year’s Missouri Tigers team. In fact when you look at the stats between the Sooners and the Tigers I find it to be a little too close for comfort.

 Stats (per game)  Oklahoma  Missouri
 Rushing Offense  202.42 (21)  165.17 (46)
 Passing Offense  354.25 (3)  344.25 (4)
 Passing Eff.  184.57 (2)  165.40 (7)
 Total Offense  556.67 (3)  509.42 (6)
 Scoring Offense  53.33 (1)  45.00 (4)
 Rushing Defense  109.83 (18)  119.42 (24)
 Pass Defense  249.67 (98)  277.08 (116)
 Pass Eff. Defense  115.62 (38)  131.42 (80)
 Total Defense  359.50 (66)  396.50 (91)
 Scoring Defense  24.83 (60)  24.67 (58)
 Net Punting  34.00 (77)  37.00 (25)
 Punt Returns  8.63 (66)  9.48 (50)
 Kickoff Returns  25.09 (7)  21.93 (44)
 Turnover Margin  1.67 (2)  0.08 (55)
 Sacks  3.25 (3)  2.33 (42)
 Tackles for Loss  8.00 (T-7)  8.00 (T-7)
 Sacks Allowed  0.92 (T-5)  1.08 (T-12)

So, is there a Kansas City curse? I have no idea but what I do know is that my worst moment in Big 12 Championship history was at that stadium. For that reason Arrowhead Stadium will always have a dark cloud over it.

I remember that game very very well

I was living in Olathe,ks and at a small watering hole called the Double Nickle. That game sucked. OU was pounded on both sides of the ball.

How in the world did we get beat like that? I still can’t figure it out. It had to be more than overlooking K-State.

I do know one thing for sure. If by some stupid chance that the Sooners overlook Mizzou even one small bit this will happen again. No doubt that Daniel and Co desperately want to beat OU in any way they can. They are being dissed by every sports analysts/writer in the country except for the moron guy in St. Louis. The Tigers are out for revenge and redemption. Sooners beware.

I agree

Missouri has some play makers and are a quality team, it’s on a field they just played on this last week, and everyone…and I mean EVERYONE seems to think OU has already won this game.

That kind of combination really bothers me. Come on Sooners don’t let this be a trap game!

Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.

W-bG-V again?

The same recipe? A couple playmakers, a chip on their shoulder, and everyone already sending OU off to victory lane. Just seems like trouble.

You’re right, it was more than overlooking K-State. If you look back at that season, K-State was rated No. 6 preseason and considered a possible national title contender. That ended when Ell Roberson was injured and we lost to Marshall, Okie State and Texas. By the end of the season, Roberson was healthy and the team was playing like it had been expected to from the beginning.

They were...

…ranked sixth nationally in total defense that year.

I don’t mean my comments to be taken to mean that this wasn’t an upset. But in truth, I wasn’t shocked that we won — I thought we had at least a sliver of a chance — as much as I was shocked by the thorough domination exhibited. I’m sure that’s what you were surprised by, too.

I spent that game working as an Audio Engineer

for a small-time video guy. Every December he did the video for the Dallas Ballet Company’s version of the Nutcracker. They did 2 shows and the evening show was during the game. At intermissions I would call home and get the score. Everytime I called it got worse.

That was a horrible day I will never forget. The Sooners lose and I had to sit through 2 showings of the freaking Nutcracker. All the while closely monitoring the audio. Awesome time.

After that day I knew exactly why the call it the Nutcracker. Because it is a full on running from across the room repeated kick in the nuts.
