In The Fold – OL Jeff Vinson Joins 2009 OU Recruiting Class

With the majority of Oklahoma’s offensive line heading to the NFL at the end of this season its obvious that the focus of this recruiting season should be on the big guys up front. After landing three highly touted linemen in last year’s class junior college recruit Jeff Vinson becomes OU’s third o-line commit for the 2009 class. Vinson is 6-6, 348lbs and is ranked as a three star recruit by Rivals.

2009 Commitment List

Josh Aladenoye OL 3 Star 6-5 347 5.5 Mesquite, TX
Drew Allen QB 3 Star 6-5 209 4.7 San Antonio, TX

Eric Ward WR 4 Star 5-11 190 4.4 Wichita Falls, TX
Tom Wort LB 4 Star 6-1 210 4.42 New Braunfels, TX

Depending on what Sam Bradford decides to do Oklahoma should have the pieces in place to make a run at their 4th consecutive Big 12 championship. Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray will both return along with slot receiver Ryan Broyles who will no doubt take a bigger role in the offense. There are rumors that Jermaine Gresham is leaning towards returning but I’ll believe that when I hear it come from his mouth.

On the defensive side of the ball they return Gerald McCoy and most likely DeMarcus Granger. Linebackers are all young and the corners will both return as well. The safeties will be replaced next season  but the bottom line is that everything next season will hinge on Oklahoma’s offensive line.

Glad to see a couple of guys from my hometown, Mesquite, TX.

I have personally seen Josh Aladenoye of North Mesquite play in several games this year. I know that its hard to tell exactly how well they will do against Div. 1 competition. But he is awesome. He fires off, gets on his blocks and stay with them until the whistle. One specific play I remember he blocked his man about 20 yards downfield. He just took this guy and said, Lets go.

Glad to see that OU has good connections down here, my son will be a freshman at North next year. Hope to see his name on that list in few years.

What position is ATH ?

what simple thing is it that I am missing?

It means athlete

They are not being recruited for a specific position per say but for athletic ability.

Tarrell Brown who played CB for Texas was the perfect example.

He was recruited out ot North Mesquite as an ATH. In high school he played quarterback, but he couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. He was a horrible passer and there was no one else on the team who could run like him. So basically it was like direct snapping it to a running back on every play. He was too small to play running back in college, and not talented enough to play quarterback.

All that being said, he had so much speed and potential talent a team would have to find a position for him. He now plays with the SF 49ers.

It does seem like most guys with the ATH turn out to be defensive players. It kind of depends on how they fill out over the next couple of years.
