Ron Prince Done At Kansas State

According to multiple reports Kansas State head coach Ron Prince will resign today at a press conference scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. He is 16-18 as the KSU head man and Saturday’s 52-21 loss to Kansas was the third in a row for the Wildcats.

Kansas State is 4-5 this season with a 1-4 record in the Big 12. One source says that Prince will stay for the remainder of the season.

wonder

I wonder what big name they will go after.(Lane Kiffin would probably like to work with Josh Freeman)

Lane Kiffin...

…has coached at USC and for the Oakland Raiders. In other words, L.A. all the way. I would have to guess he would be miserable in Manhattan, Kan.

That makes sense on a lot of levels

and I’m sure Venables would be on any short list.

Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.

I thought

he was also on the Clemson shortlist, and that seems to be a much better job.

Clemson is a lot like Texas A&M

They have high expectations every year but have nothing to base it on.

by ccmachine on Nov 5, 2008 7:53 PM CST up reply actions

But A&M

has all of Texas and especially the Houston area to recruit from that Clemson does not. A&M also has more of a tradition, though I’m not sure 18 year old kids give a damn about tradition. (to back me up here is Barry Switzer on OSU’s facilities from 2007) I think they look for pretty and new facilities and locker rooms and weight rooms, and study halls, etc.

Which is why Kansas St, maybe a tough job. They started the facilities arms race in the early 90’s. Everyone else in the big 12 had to join in….making Kansas State’s stuff, old in comparison. Plus it’s in a small, fairly rural setting of the little apple.

We're trying to catch up

There’s a fundraising campaign called “Wildcat Victory” that’s trying to raise the money for a big renovation of all our facilities, but primarily Snyder Family Stadium and Bramlage Coliseum. We do need to catch up, but our practice facilities are still fairly competitive.

Bill Snyder

I just read that one of their options would be the return of Bill Snyder. Doesn’t make much sense to me since he’s about 70 years old now. Regardless, I’m sure he’ll have plenty of input. Others mentioned in that article were Gary Barnett and Dennis Franchione.

Gary

Patterson at TCU has also been mentioned, but it’s been said that he would likely have an easier time trying to get TCU to the BCS than a moribund Kansas State team competing against OU, TX, Missouri, Nebraska, etc.

It would be quite interesting to see how the defense would react to a Venables hiring before the bowl game. I would assume that Stoops would take a more active role in preparing the defense if that scenario happened.

I'm not sure I agree...

…that it’s easier to get into the BCS at TCU than at K-State. At TCU, he almost has to go 12-0, or at worst 11-1, to even have a chance. At K-State, he would have to win the North, which is not all that difficult right now, and then he’d be down to a one-game play in. Sure, that game would be against a South division power, but in a one-game ‘playoff,’ just about anything can happen.

Beyond that, if he goes 11-1 at TCU and doesn’t get a BCS game, his alternative is…the Liberty Bowl, or something like that. He could go 9-3 in the Big 12 and still get the Alamo, Holiday, or even Cotton bowls.

I'm not sure I totally agree

…with it either. If it was so easy then TCU would have been to a BCS bowl by now. After all, he’s been there for nearly 10 years. I was just repeating what I saw on another blog.

Do you have any idea why they pulled the plug on Prince so soon? I thought this was considered to be a rebuilding year any way. Maybe it was that he chose to build quickly with junior college players rather than developing high school players. His teams had a couple big wins and it’s not like they were god awful like Iowa State or something like that.

If you have some time...

…check out these two posts on my site.

Comparison to Mark Mangino’s first three seasons
Comparison to Gary Pinkel’s first three seasons

Because of the addition of the JuCo guys, plus this being Freeman’s (and Prince’s, for that matter) third year, we were expecting improvement. Certainly we didn’t want to see what happened at the end of last year, when the defense tanked and we got run by some pretty bad teams (Iowa State, Nebraska). This season has been a repeat of last November, and we are going the wrong direction in just about every measurable way. There is real fear among the fans, and administrators, too, apparently, that another year of Prince’s recruiting (we’re something like 68th nationally for 2009 right now) could set this program back for a decade.

Here’s how I put it: Giving a young, inexperienced coach a few more years could result in him finding his way and making significant improvement. However, the evidence we’ve seen from Prince suggests that a few more years would only result in more regression and possible disaster for our football program.

And now they’re being denied. This is a freaking disaster for K-State. One of many, unfortunately.

I would bet they are going with Patterson

And some how it was leaked waaaay too early. Kind of like Michigan with Les Miles last year. Now let’s see what the fall out is going to be.
