Sooners Win In A Rout/Set Up Top 25 Match-Up In Second Round Of NIT

Dominance! Complete dominance. That is how I would describe Oklahoma’s game against Mississippi Valley State on Monday night. The Sooners forced 24 turnovers, had 18 steals, blocked 3 shots and out rebounded the Delta Devils 33-32. Oklahoma shot 52% from the floor and jumped out to a 17-2 lead without Blake Griffin even attempting a shot. After Mississippi Valley State scored the first basket of the second half Oklahoma scored 20 unanswered points and the rout was on with the Sooners up 55-21.

Despite a slow start Blake Griffin led the team in scoring with 20 points. He also had a team high 19 rebounds to record his second consecutive double-double and the 12th of his Sooner career. Other Sooners who scored in double figures were Willie Warren and Ray Willis who each scored 14 points.

Up next for Oklahoma are Stephen Curry and the Davidson Wildcats. Curry scored 33 points and dished out 9 assists to lead Davidson to a 99-64 win over James Madison in the night’s opening game. The Wildcats are currently ranked 21st in the AP poll and should give OU a tough challenge in just the Sooners’ third game of the season. Curry is an amazing athlete and a phenomenal basketball player but if Oklahoma has aspirations of winning the Big 12 they need to win this game.

This game

doesn’t have any bearing at all on whether the Sooners will win the Big 12. I understand that you probably meant that it would be a nice confidence builder to start the season, but it’s only the third game of the season. Of course, I’d love to see them win and look good doing it, but If they lose, then that’s okay. Stephen Curry may be one of the best individual players they face the entire year and having that challenge early in the season will benefit the team win or lose.

The goal for Jeff Capel is to get this team to be playing its best basketball in February and March. This team looks to be pretty talented, but it’s best players are still pretty young. Even though the media picked us to win the Big 12, I would be satisfied with a top 3 finish, continued improvment and solid momentum heading into the post season tournaments.

My Point Is

That Curry is a great player but he doesn’t have a great supporting cast. When the Sooners get to conference play they will face better teams than this one. I do understand that the season, and the players for that matter, are young but if they can’t get by Davidson at home then the chances are that they won’t be able to get by Texas or Kansas either.

Curry v. Blake

is a great early-season matchup. Although I think that this game, like all pre-season NIT games, is almost meaningless, it could show us exactly where the team is at. A lot of people have us as a final four contender, and to beat Davidson by a helthy score could build a lot of confidence as we begin the season.

Sooner71, I don’t think that a top 3 finish is going to be considered good for this Sooners team. We have a lot of expectations built on this team, and with a very down Big 12 conference this year, it would be a disappointment if we are not 1 or 2 in the league by the end of the season. The great thing about being an OU fan, to me, is the fact that we expect so much out of our teams, but as a program or university, that means that you have a history of winning. So, a big finish this year in the Big 12 could lead to great things for our basketball program!
