Ask A Cornhusker

Hello Sooner Fans!

My name is Jon Johnston aka Corn Blight and I publish SBN's Nebraska Cornhuskers fansite Corn Nation. I thought that I would throw up this FanPost to see what you Sooner fans want to talk about. What do you want to know about the Nebraska Cornhuskers?

Post your questions here and I'll be more than happy to provide you with the best answers that I can. Looking forward to a great game with you guys! Go Big Red!

p.s. I do have a question for you. There will be a pre-game celebration to commemorate the 1971 "Game of the Century", with many members of both teams present and introduced on the field. Does this game mean still anything to you?

FanPost are for the voice of the fan and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Crimson and Cream Machine administrators.

Game of the Century?

well, I’m older than the average poster here, by a long ways, but I can say YES. The Game of the Century is one that is still talked about today in Oklahoma, and Sooner circles when ever the great rivalry between OU and Nebraska is talked about. This game was the greatest of the greats, and there were many amazing game played between these two programs over the years. So I would say the answer is mos diffidently yes.

Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.

stupid no edit…sorry about the typos.

Here’s a picture from the 71 game to make up for it:

Questions for the Husker

1)How are the Nebraska fans adjusting to rebuilding? Is there restlessness in the Husker nation?
2) How would you describe Nebraska’s current offensive scheme, and what does Nebraska try to do most? (OU is throw, and throw, and throw deep, screw ball control and balance)
3) who is your biggest impact player (not necessarily the most talented) on both Offense and Defense
4) Do the Huskers still miss playing OU every year with the split in the big 12 now over 10 years old? are we still one of your top rivals, or like the Oklahoma side, it’s taken a back seat to other divisional games (like Colorado and Missouri/Kansas for Neb, and Okla. State and Texas for OU)?

answers

1 – There’s a bit of restlessness but I believe that it comes from the extreme. After winning so much for years under Tom Osborne, there’s a certain amount of wishful thinking in that it was supposed to come back just because he did (although in a different role as athletic director). The Missouri game was hard to take because we weren’t very competitive.

The vast majority of Husker fans know that Husker football was screwed up badly under Pederson/Callahan, and that it will take time to get back to winning.

2 – Hahahaha. Current offensive scheme……. well, the keyword coming into the season was ‘multiple", the idea being that we would be able to do a lot of different things on offense. One area that was emphasized was getting back to a physically dominant run game. Unfortunately, what we’ve discovered is that our offensive line is not capable of being physically dominant when running the ball, i.e., we cannot run heavy sets and be successful. We tried that during the Missouri game and we got crushed, so the coaches have changed it up and started going with a round hole/round peg thing that works much better.

So, here’s the deal. We still vary the offense quite a bit, but we have been very successful in spreading the field and using ball control type passes to gain 4-6 yards a play. We’ll run spread options from time to time, and we’ll run off play-action, but the key is that we’ll be using more 10 personnel than 12 personnel.

One key thing here – Nebraska has done very well with the middle screen and Marlon Lucky against blitzing teams. The right call at the right time and we’re off to the races.

3. Ndamukong Suh. Most people can’t pronounce it either, so just go with “Sue”. He’s a nose tackle. He’s seemed to have shaken off the Callahan/Cosgrove hangover that still looms over other players from time to time.

4. I’m older than most posters, but yes, I miss Oklahoma dearly, mostly because it was a lot of fun to hate you guys. I hated Barry Switzer, but it was a joyous hate. Barry Switzer was a fun guy. It’s more than just missing the old days when we were really good, the vast majority of those games were between giants and it was great football. Two of the greatest coaches ever – I mean, holy cow, you’d have to not have a pulse to not miss that.

“Rivalry” is a huge questions for Nebraskans, so much that when I wrote a Husker preview book last year, we dedicated a chapter to rivalries. Whether or not we now have a true rival has been an issue of discussion at Corn Nation.

long personal comment on the OU-Nebraska rivalry

When OU was really, really bad under John Blake, Nebraska gave us the worst loss point wise ever, the next year in Norman, Nebraska topped there one year old record. After the game, leaving the stadium, every Nebraska fan I saw was busy talking to the OU fans saying how they were sorry, and how they missed us, and how we would be be better, and they wanted us to get better as we were their rival.

And that is always how I felt about Nebraska…it wasn’t “hate”. We hate Texas, if we beat them 100-0, and they never won a game ever, I’d say, “Ain’t it great!”. We hate Okla State, in a little brother should never beat us sorta way. But Nebraska was different. It was a game of giants….a quality opponent you were proud to say you beat. Nebraska fans knew (knows) football history, they had a respect for the college game, and a respect for Oklahoma. It was a game, of “to be the best you have to beat the best, and they are the best”. They knew our Heisman winners, and we knew theirs. They knew our past legendary coaches, and we knew theirs. They knew our National Championships, and we knew theirs.

Nebraska/OU was the kinda of rival you were proud to have. And proud to beat.

Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.

I hate to bring

this up, but with this new coaching staff we have this thing called “Husker magic” that will show up out of nowhere at the end of the game, stealing your very souls away.

hey

 you guys.

Nice game by you, it was an ass-kicking. I can’t believe how bad we were in the first five minutes, and it was over that fast. Very disappointing to say the least.

Nebraska – Oklahoma – the clash of titans will have to wait at least another year.

Take care of yourselves, and good luck with the rest of your season.
